Was reading elsewhere some stats on Spanish Flu and pregnant women. Anyone who is pregnant right now needs to isolate and self quarantine. The key issue is decreased lung capacity.

Pregnant women who catch the flu are at serious risk for flu-related complications, including death, and that risk far outweighs the risk of possible side effects from injectable vaccines containing killed virus, according to an extensive review.

"...Because pregnancy causes a variety of changes in the body, most notably decreased lung capacity, along with increased cardiac output and oxygen consumption, it puts pregnant women at high risk for complications. In addition, parts of the mother's immune system are selectively suppressed, a process that offers essential protection to the fetus, but decreases the mother's ability to fight off infection.

Other findings in the review:

  • In the first four months of the H1N1 flu outbreak this spring, pregnant women were hospitalized at four times the rate of other healthy adults infected with the virus, according to the CDC.
  • Pregnant women made up 13 percent of all H1N1 deaths during that period, and most of the women who died were previously healthy.
  • Pregnant women do not get infected with the flu more often than other adults, but they develop more serious complications and more often. Pregnant women with underlying conditions such as asthma or diabetes are at even higher risk for complications.
  • During the 1918 Spanish flu pandemic, of the 1,350 flu-infected pregnant women who were studied, half developed pneumonia, and more than half of those who did so died, with most deaths occurring during the third trimester.
  • During the 1957 pandemic, nearly half of all women of childbearing age who died of the flu were pregnant.

I'm specifically interested in what I should have on hand if I get sick or a family member get sick.
I have some supplies and recently bought a oxygen concentrator.
I'm just planning on the fact that I will or a family member will get sick.

I'm not counting on being in the sticks to save my family. I was commenting to a friend on here. We are way back in the "hollers" with just a handful of scattered neighbors. All of us have been in health care. One was the chief executive nurse ( not sure of the exact title) over all nursing for three of the major hospitals in this are. We have a recently retired pharmacist and physical therapist and a recovery room nurse. I've casually brought up the subject of the virus with a few of them and always get the deer in the headlights look. Then they say "but look where we live! I don't think we have anything to worry about down here. Then, in the next breath they start complaining about all their doctor and hospital appointments and how they're fed up of sitting in waiting rooms and having tests for this and that. Theses are highly educated people ( lovely people! ) but it's as if all their learning only applied to their working life. I'm the lowly army medic that wants to knock their darned heads together!"

Dave, did you see the story over at ANP (All News Pipeline)? It has a graph from John Hopkins University that CNBC ran which shows the confirmed coronavirus cases in the US are much higher than the 15 confirmed cases the MSM is reporting.

I honestly think the fungus is an artifact. It is everywhere. Its not that uncommon to get even in the US in people who are immunocompromised.

Fluconazole and ketoconazole are currently available for fish and birds, oral not IV, and at one time itraconazole was also. Please read on cautions as they are, as noted, rough on the liver. I believe fluconazole is slightly less so but that is just from Internet information and not a medical professional. The information on fungal infections from COVID-19 seems fairly new and the rate of incidence is yet to be determined so bacterial infections may be more common (or not).

Fluconazole is generic Diflucan and sometimes taken for yeast infections so some people include it in their preps.

There will be a point where if you wish to survive you have to self isolate....

I see a point where all loan payments will be suspended until America recovers, but how long will recovery take????

The Virus will migrate into rural areas and the medical facilities and staff will be overwhelmed quickly....
What is the limitation on your preps for the number of individuals that you can sustain for several months????

Excellent post - thank you! We are out in rural America - we have five acres and are surrounded by cornfields. So, we're already isolated. But we've had a lot of conversations about how we want to prepare. We already have seeds. I just bought some medicinal herb seeds in case we need them. We have things we need to deal with the sick - as far as we can at home. Family is welcome to come - the food won't be fancy, but it will sustain life. And if they come, they get to work - cutting trees for firewood, helping in the garden, and canning and preparing food. I agree - this is going to change our lives. It might knock us back a hundred years. And, yes, prayer and planning, is going to get us through it.

NIAID’s Rocky Mountain Laboratories (RML) in Hamilton, Montana, produced images of the novel coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2, previously known as 2019-nCoV) on its scanning and transmission electron microscopes on Tuesday, Feb. 11, 2020.

SARS-CoV-2 causes COVID-19 disease, which has grown to be a global public health emergency since cases were first detected in Wuhan, China, in December 2019.

RML investigator Emmie de Wit, Ph.D., provided the virus samples as part of her studies, microscopist Elizabeth Fischer produced the images, and the RML visual medical arts office digitally colorized the images.

Note that the images do not look much different from MERS-CoV (Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus, which emerged in 2012) or the original SARS-CoV (severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus, which emerged in 2002). That is not surprising: The spikes on the surface of coronaviruses give this virus family its name – corona, which is Latin for “crown,” and most any coronavirus will have a crown-like appearance.

Western sanitation the way I see it. And I would include Japan in that as well. Although the virus is transmissible through fomites (surface contamination), droplets and airborne its also shed thru the fecal oral route. With the exception of Japan and perhaps some others they have squat toilets and poor hygiene. Many of them don’t use toilet paper but wipe with their hands. In addition soap and water washing after defecating is rare.

I’m thinking that although it’s transmissible through other vectors the virus load is less and your less likely to catch the virus thru the other routes. China has relatively poor hygiene especially among the older people and it’s hard to change life long habits. Therefore the older people have higher incidence of illness and add that to a weaker immune system that comes with age.

We are not seeing the spread of disease in other countries like China has experienced and the biggest difference between China and the rest of us is hygiene habits. I surmise the virus load in fecal is more pronounced than other routes.

First, I was in error since the lady took Uber, which is a car sharing, like a taxi, and not the tube, which is an underground subway system. Next, well BUY WHATEVER you think you will need over the next year or so from China. I have been. I have been buying kitchen stuff, all made in China, appliances, like blenders, kitchen knives, some made in Europe, and textiles, mostly made in China. Seriously, just go down a store aisle, look at what you might need, is still there, and made in China AND BUY IT, FOR BARTER IF NOTHING ELSE.

Start reviewing anything you buy normally. If it is from China, see how much you have versus what you may need. Then buy the difference.

I would start at food and medicines first..... they are going to go first...
