CORONA Main Coronavirus thread

I am also curious why there's so few deaths outside of China, plenty of people sick outside of China and they're keeping their cell phones, tweeting and having facetime chats with family...

I think that its important to realize what phase we are in of the infection. Today is the 17th of February. If incubation is up to 24 days that would mean that some people would have contracted it back on January 24th or so.

Look back into the the way back machine of 3 weeks ago:

There were 1317 confirmed cases. 30 of those were outside of China. Officially 41 people had died.

Those people who were likely infectious that gave it to the folks we are seeing it today contracted it in the first week of January, days after the WHO was notified and perhaps a week before the first official death on January 11th.

It FEELS like we should be seeing more. Just remember, we are really in the midst of the second or third generation of this virus. It is very, very early.

"The State Department announced later that 14 of the evacuees received confirmed they had the virus but were allowed to board the flight because they did not have symptoms. They were being isolated separately from other passengers on the flight, the U.S. State and Health and Human Services said in a joint statement.
Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases at the National Institutes of Health, said Sunday that an infected person who shows minimal symptoms could still pass the virus to someone else."

These people landed in San Antonio in the middle of the night!

They hashed this out on KTSA radio back on the 13th. There were two opinions presented. One was that patients coming in to San Antonio was no big deal, you have to put them somewhere and SA has good doctors and support. The other opinion which I share, says that is akin to fouling your own nest. Most of the military medical personnel train in SA. All the USAF troops go to Basic at Lackland. This is not a good idea. We need the med teams and a place to train more of them plague-free. I have been steamed about this for days. And to come in the middle of the night? Not good optics, people.

Japanese Emperor Naruhito cancels birthday event due to outbreak of coronavirus; the last time this happened was in 1996 - NHK

Concerns apparently didn't derail Japan's annual Naked Festival, Hadaka Matsuri, celebrated this past Saturday. Video might be from last year--the only masks I see aren't on faces. Lots of folks jammed together, possibly fueled by alcohol. What could go wrong?

I have been saying urge your kids and grandkids to avoid Spring Break since day 1. Knowing China, and the multi component level of weaponizing that has gone on, is this thing designed to damage testes from fever like Mumps and sterilize its victims who survive? Cull its overpopulation imbalance of males? This is getting absolutely diabolical.

Bannon's Pandemic War Room is on, he says they may go to 7 day broadcasts as so much is happening over weekends.

I suspect the designers just wanted people dead. Going into this reduced-procreation as a goal just seems too much of a stretch. One they had a good receptor, all the body parts that can go south as a result is just a side issue.

With all due respect, this has already been hashed out. OA is a beloved and respected member of this community. He owns his own words, he posts what he posts, and he says what he says any way he wants to say it. That is his right. And it is your right to scroll past posts that annoy you. Can we please get off OA's lawn and move on?

I would like to thank the guinea pigs on the cruise ships for giving us more reliable data in reference to infected:dead:serious:critical in regards to the Chinese Corona. Since china refused to behave responsibly, it's nice of them to take the personal sacrifice so that we can all as what we are in store for over the next 6 weeks.

So, basically, the U.S. "infected" count nearly doubled overnight--from 15 to 29. The sick Americans weren't included in our count as long as they remained in Japan or on the Diamond Princess.

ETA: Wonder how long it will take to include them in the official tally?

From Reuters News.....
MON FEB 17, 2020 / 1:42 PM IST
U.S. firms in China report staff shortages, say coronavirus hitting global operations: AmCham
SHANGHAI (Reuters) - Nearly half of the U.S. companies in China say their global operations are already seeing an impact from business shutdowns due to the coronavirus epidemic, according to a poll by Shanghai's American Chamber of Commerce (AmCham).
Some 78% of the respondents also said they do not have sufficient staff at their Chinese plants to resume full production, as public health restrictions make it harder to workers to return to their jobs after an extended holiday.
The survey polled 109 companies with manufacturing operations in Shanghai, Suzhou, Nanjing and the wider Yangtze River Delta.
Forty-eight percent of respondents said plant shutdowns have already impacted their global supply chains, while almost all others expect an impact within the next month, the survey said.
"The biggest problem is a lack of workers as they are subjected to travel restrictions and quarantines, the number one and number two problems identified in the survey. Anyone coming from outside the immediate area undergoes a 14-day quarantine," said AmCham President Ker Gibbs.
"Therefore, most factories have a severe shortage of workers, even after they are allowed to open. This is going to have a severe impact on global supply chains that is only beginning to show up."
Cities across China have been in lockdown since an extended Lunar New Year holiday last month, while travel bans and quarantine orders have been set in place around the country in efforts to curb the virus from spreading.
This has disrupted economic activity throughout the world's second largest economy as factories and businesses struggle to reopen, throwing global supply chains into disarray.
The government has promised support for industries and sectors that are worst hit, especially those involved in manufacturing. Authorities have told banks to lower interest rates for qualified firms and tolerate higher levels of bad loans, while also pledging to cut taxes and fees.

I have a problem with the quarantine facilities being in some of our most important and strategic bases. It's been said that they have facilities, security, etc. but there should be other places to send them, or at least less important bases.

Jubilee, I absolutely agree with you--on principle. But babble is in the eye of the beholder. Determining the value of a post is the responsibility of the reader. I don't want others to carpet the world so I can go barefoot.

You said it best: "Just remember that the 'ignore' button is there for a reason."

As contagious as this...does anyone else find it odd that there has been no real news about all the people who have been evacuated and placed in quarantine after returning to the US? Shouldn't we have seen at least a percentage of them test positive? How many people have been placed in quarantine? If they are past their 14 days and released, shouldn't we have seen them happily waving as they left the facility?
Per CDC website - only 467 tests total in the last month. 69 in the last week. That just doesn't pass my sniff test. Either they are withholding test kits because they are not accurate, or they are not disclosing accurate numbers.

THANK YOU!!!

Folks need to be reminded that when considering the infection curves and such you need to do PRECISELY what you did above and center ourselves where we are in the curve of the spread of the virus.

In short, wait a few weeks (like about 4)

No disrespect for your sniff test, but if there was thousands very sick in ICU's in U.S. hospitals from the coronavirus, I sort of doubt they would be able to hide that. SOME nurse or doctor would talk. Relatives of the sick people would talk and so on. This isn't China where they can just censor everything.

Up until now, the BEST numbers we have, indicate a doubling period of 2.4 days. Meaning the exponential curve has a 2.4 day period.

You think we're a tad behind or under-infected?? Wait about 9.6 days and see where we are THEN.

Until late last week, they were NOT testing people with bad flu symptoms (which, of course, are the same as the coronavirus symptoms) unless they had been in Wuhan. They've since expanded that criteria, but it will take sone time for the testing numbers to catch up.

Plus, I think they're lying through their teeth! IIRC, some CDC bigwig essentially admitted they were only providing limited information, so as to not "incite panic".

RONDABEN, y'all keep teaching us microbiology (and a little A&P 1 and 2), and a few of us will keep explaining Epidemiology and why "Maffz Iz HARD but IMPOTANT!!!" and eventually folks here will start to understand why some of us had been seriously :hof: 2 weeks ago but SUDDENLY took stock of what we were reading and have gone really calm n quiet as we watch the numbers showing up from the Cruise Ships, Miramar and the DMAT and the other quarantine locations.

RIght now there ain't enough numbers to crunch to get an accurate impression on Fatality rate, infection rate (though we're coming closer on the R(naught) for this and it (shudder cringe) looks like somewhere near 4.6 to 6.7, which is a valid :hof: .

Smoking in Asia especially China is still a thing. Maybe heavy smokers have created some damage to the lung tissues that makes a person less able to fight off the infection, or this us so insidious that most of the deaths are from re-infections and since most westerners are on the first infection we may be in for unpleasant surprises at the end of March.

Be interesting to see what effect it has on those that vape instead of smoke.

Sure glad I gave up smoking a long time ago.

Speaking of which aren't many of the E cigarettes and vaping fluids made in China.

Did you miss the post with the recording of a caller to a talk show who claimed multiple patients hospitalized in Buffalo, N.Y. (they mentioned specific hospitals), multiple tests, and at least 5 or 6 positives? I don't have any relatives who work in health care there, so can't help with confirmation or debunking, unfortunately.

Yeah, must've missed that. Without data on their actual condition, ages, pre-existing conditions, or whether or not they're in a ICU...its kind of hard to sound an alarm on that.

I don't know where the others are made, but my DW uses E-Cigs. The juice she uses is made on site where she buys. It has already passed .Gov approval. She knows the owner well.

I'm not sure why they are not utilizing all those FEMA camps I've heard so much about.

My understanding is that those "camps" are actually a contract to build them in a short time.

Something to be said for quarantining possibles near a runway.

It's pretty simple. They got sick from, we're hospitalized from, and died from 'the fku'.

Go get your flu shot !! (Sarcasm)
