I'm not a "medical type", but back when I worked with enzymes in the lab (research for developing test kits) I washed my hands after every change of gloves. I lost count of how many times I washed my hands each day but I eventually ended up with very dry, chapped hands. I was advised by the enzymologist on our staff that instead of washing with soap and hot water, I should switch to soap and cold water. After putting this advice into practice, my hands eventually healed. It worked in that situation....FWIW.

Yes, it's not the hot water that matters, it's the soap and friction that are important.

During work I use an alcohol based hand cleaner with Aloe. The dispensers are positioned at the entrance inside each room and in my office. After seeing the patient, I hit the button as I leave the room. Yes, my hands get dry and chapped with repeated hand washing. When I retire for the day, I hit the Vaseline Intensive Care hand lotion just before I go to sleep. Keep it on all night long. In winter, my skin dries out extensively due to hot showers. After I get out, shave, etc., I use the moisturizer on my lower body and the extra goes to my hands and arms.

For really bad chapped hands, I fill a pair of exam gloves with several squirts of Vasoline Intensive Care lotion and wear them while I sleep. My hands are slimy when I wake up and remove the gloves, but the excess is easily washed and the irritated, chapped skin is resolved.

Back when I used to do NICU our hands would get terribly dried out from washing between patients, especially in the winter. It was so bad that even lotion didn't stop our skin from cracking, so we applied a thin coat of Neosporin after washing and that did wonders!

I've learned that the "second round" with the virus [if we make it through the first pass] involves a significant cytokine storm and that turmeric can mitigate the issue. Can someone direct me to where this was discussed earlier? I know it's here somewhere. Thanks.

So did I hear that right? Essentially the CDC just told America to prepare? Determine how to deal with school closings, not being able to go to work, financial situations, working from home, etc. Right?

Well intentioned I do believe but too late.

At this late date CDC actions are nothing more than a circle jerk.

(pardon the analogy)

Sounds like Rush is either sicker than we thought, or his new medal has gone to his head. What he is saying is beyond stupid, not because this flu (or "common cold" as he calls it) is physically dangerous, because there's evidence it's not particularly deadly. The danger is in how virulent it is (both pre- and post-symptomatic = high R0). That's important because of the cascading global economic effect it could have. Low savings rates + fragile global supply lines + just-in-time inventories = potential economic disaster on par with or greater than the Great Recession. Is this the eqivalent of the Spanish Flu? I doubt it, but economically it could be a real black swan event.

Somebody yanked a string!

#BREAKING Croatia reports first confirmed case of novel #coronavirus in Balkans

Well, we have a vacation to Italy, Hungary and Croatia first of April. I guess it's time to rethink it.

We had used points and gotten a suite on Emirates 380 for the flight over. Took me weeks and weeks of watching availability to book that. 1st world problem. yea I know. But I was kinda looking forward to that. :(

Yes, those countries may be on lockdown by April. I hope that you have cancelation insurance?

I think the CDC just gave us our “ahh-hah” moment. Get your sh#t done ASAP, whatever that may be for you. I’m doing Sams today. Filling three 40# propane tanks tomorrow. Electrician comes Saturday to wire pigtails off breaker for my well head and pressure tank. 8000 watt Generac being delivered Friday. Picking up two more 55 gallon food grade drums and another burn Barrel this week. I believe I and my MAG could self sustain for one year as of this weekend. It’s a good feeling.

CDC Livestream: CONTAINMENT measures coming to US.

It appears that the hinges on the door of opportunity are squeaking. We are working hard to make sure we are on the right side of the door when it closes. We plan to be the masters of our own containment should it become necessary; to be calm and work our plan. It's comforting to have practiced these kinds of scenarios so that the fear factor has been removed. In the words of the late Grandpa Bradley, "just do the drill."

Be safe out there my friends!
