You can also use the needlepoint mesh. I got mine at Walmart but I've seen it at Hobby Lobby, too. I cut mine to size for the dehydrator and "cooked" it on high temp for a while to get the new plastic fumes out of it before I used it for drying any food. For freezing things, just lying outside in the sun for a couple of days seems to be enough.

I have a nice supply of TP, I go to the loo a lot, so go through a lot of TP.

No, I'm not going to get a bidet.

People's ideas on hoarding vary, to me not having a well-stocked pantry is a no go, I wasn't raised like that, even my best friend who is a liberal has a well-stocked pantry. Like me, she grew up with parents that would often find themselves laid off or even out of a job because mining and factory jobs were like that in the 70s and 80s.
I was raised to always have a deep pantry. My siblings all were to, and though our political views differ, we all continue to prep. The bright point in this pandemic is that other family members now prep, and they prep heavy. I'm very thankful for that.

Neither here nor there.
Petco is shuttering 348 of its stores, so if you're reliant on one for pet food and supplies best be going there this weekend.

OC bought a bag of black eyed peas at WM this afternoon and the bag was small, as in exactly two cups of beans.

EDITED: It's Pet Valu that's closing all of it's US stores.

Was the bag of black-eyed peas marked to tell how many oz. it contained?

When I started using split peas, I found that a one pound bag was roughly two and a half cups of dried split peas. Various beans might be different, but I'll bet they're at least close to the same.

Maybe the bag of black-eyed peas was just another example of the down-sizing that seems to be a continuing and constant thing nowadays.

One pound is what the bag said.

Well, maybe black-eyed peas are heavier than green split peas. But if you store any, keep an eye on them. I found out that the cheaper Deer Corn sold in the fall doesn't last as long as regular feed corn and I think it's because they save money with less drying time, since they assume it will all get used the very same fall and not be stored long enough to matter.

So if your pound bag used to contain more peas, maybe it's possible the beans aren't being dried as well, therefore fewer beans at the same weight.

Just thought I'd mention this. It's mostly just guesswork on my part, based on my own experience.

The bag of beans changed shape. Instead of 3" x 7" as I recall all one lb bags it was 5" x 5". Looked like 12 oz but was 16 oz and packed tight. Bags used to be packed a lot looser.

$1.48/# Walmart. Only store in town that had any. They seem to have more groceries that are southern based than any other here. Guess maybe that's because they are based in Arkansas.

As for sauces, I take a salad dressing bottle and fill it about 1/4 cup of olive oil, shake in some Italian spices, a tablespoon or two of lemon and lime juice, a sprinkle of pink salt (through a small fine funnel) and the rest is balsamic vinegar. Shake really well and no refrigeration needed.

You toss your moldy cream cheese? I just scrape the mold onto a napkin with a butter knife life a surgeon.
Not a great idea. Although I know people have done it for years. But mold can be safely cut off *hard* cheeses. In semi soft or soft cheese, the toxins the molds produce penetrate significantly further than any visible signs of mold.

After spending hundreds of dollars on emergency vet care to save our little Border Collie, Red, I treat even small bits of mold with a lot more respect.

Granted, she ate an entire 3# block of cream cheese that was literally covered with blue mold. But 7 hours later, she was dying... in full blown grand mal seizures, her liver enzymes were off the charts, and she was extremely dehydrated from vomiting. The vet said she survived mostly because I loaded her up with charcoal and milk thistle after an early misdiagnosis, while I was trying to find a better vet.

Even small amounts of mycotoxins can cause permanent, cumulative liver or kidney damage. The dog food recall very recently (SportSomething?) was caused by essentially mold in the corn in the food...

Humans can become sensitized so that even tiny amounts of mold can trigger terrible reactions... everything from an asthma type lung constriction to a similar (but different) anaphylactic shock reaction. It's absolutely best to avoid consuming any foodstuff that isn't *supposed to* have mold (blue cheese or certain others that are served with a furry white "bloom" on them...

I bought some grass fed roasts and sirloin steaks from a small CA ranch. They were out of their filets. I like the small size the roasts come in. Bear River Valley Ranch.

I did a Costco order today. Must be because of the holidays but they were out of Hamburger, pesto, salad dressing, potato chips, 1 type of bagged salad, bagels, brown eggs, bbq sauce, and a few others I can't remember.
That has me worried also. I been trying to figure out what day to order this week from 2 different stores on Instacart.
If one is out of something I want like bread or lettuce then I have to spend more going to another. Those fees and tips really add up. The last water order I did they charged a heavy item fee of 10 bucks added to the other fees and tips.

Figured I’d give a grocery report from WKY. I went to a local Kroger this morning to pick up a few things. I shop sales mainly, so I wasn’t after a lot of stuff, but they were in dire need of restocking everything. Lots of empty holes in the whole store.
I don’t know how other grocery stores are around here, because that’s the first time I’ve been in a store in the past few weeks, but this one looked bad.

The last ten days or so when I went to my local Shurfine, maybe it's just the holiday stock up, but there has been almost no bread and in the meat cooler, very little meat and what has been on sale is a little higher then what I usually find. I went back yesterday for bread and in a week, there is no bread. Same couple of old loafs of crap I would never eat. Was lucky to find a few hamburger and hotdog buns. The meat cooler, almost no bacon, hotdogs, kielbasa, etc. Maybe 14 packs of expensive hotdogs. No sauerkraut. Most shelves are real thin so maybe the meat distributor is having shortages of the prepackaged foods. Otherwise, most everything else in the store is normal.

Well, my report of the grocery store today is similar to a few here on the last day or two. A LOT of holes. In fact, it’s the worst I’ve seen this particular Meijer. Almost no butter (although lots of margarine), holes in the coffee, orange juice, milk, bread, and eggs.

Also almost wiped out of trash bags, still out of corned beef hash, still very little in the way of sauces and dry mixes, and for some reason the produce aisle was hit hard. Several big empty sections without a single vegetable or fruit on it. It was strange.

Also noting that the store was kinda empty, not many shoppers. And for the first time I saw a handful of people not wearing masks or who had them pulled down to their chin.

I ordered from 3 stores today in S. CA. high desert and Stater Bros where I did my large order was out of hamburger.
Everything else was well stocked. Eggs, milk, produce, bread etc.
Order # 2 was Costco where I found organic hamburger along with case items like water. Only thing is delivery person liberated 1 lb of hamburger out of 4. Maybe her kids were starving or something. Now days who knows.
3rd store Vons I got all my deli items along with some things the others don't carry like veggie cream cheese. So actually worked out well and I was pleasantly surprised. Stressful though trying to keep track.

I have learned that no matter how much sugar you have, it is not enough
Lol! When I was feeding 4 active teens- canning hundreds of pounds of fruit, and baking cakes, cookies, pies, and muffins weekly- I went through over 500# of sugar in a year.

No one in our family is overweight, either.

And God help you if you ever decide to make wine! You're right... you can never have too much sugar.

I thought 100 lbs would be enough......

Was at Sam’s club this evening, it was very well stocked except for boneless skinless chicken breasts and thighs which were on sale today. They were also out of rotisserie chickens and their house bacon that you buy by the twenty pound case. Limits of one on tp and PT still.

Add shredded cheese and you’ve got the sauce for homemade mac & cheese. Type of cheese and seasonings are your choice; the possibilities are endless!
I make this same recipe for cheese sauce. You're right, endless uses for it.
I slice hard boiled eggs into a sharp cheese version of this sauce, and spoon it over buttered toast. Fantastic

Went to Aldi's this morning. It's been probably 10 days since I was there last. A lot more holes in canned goods this time than I have seen in quite a while. I use a lot of their brand of cream of chicken soup...today they didn't have any. Frozen food had a few holes and the rest not all that full. There was 2 ladies in line in front of me with 3 carts loaded to the max top and bottom. I'm guessing food stamps, but they were buying stuff that you actually have to cook not convivence stuff.

Food stamps? How about the stimulus check?

Wife and I went shopping for odds and ends today (extra measuring cups etc) and even she is starting to get concerned. There were a LOT of empty shelves at the local stores today. Not just missing an item here and there, but entire shelves empty.

Last time I saw this was during the first shut down when nothing was on any shelves, but that was food primarily. What we saw today was things like pots / pans / utensils for cooking / things like that.

I also have been the won to warn others to pay attention and be stocked up, today two different people I know commented on it and that we have almost no more time to get ready.

I am feeling that things are changing again and not for the better.

I have been buying a little pasta here and there all summer long; then realized I might need some sauce, but didn't want to buy a bunch of jarred stuff. I started buying the packets of Spaghetti Sauce mixes; and small cans of tomato paste. I will be growing tomatoes this year and hopefully, canning my own spaghetti sauce.

Yesterday there were NO packets of spaghetti sauce mixes! And, there were only two packets left of the Beef Stew Seasoning packets. The prices for those little packets have jumped in price. I paid $2.48 for a little 1.5 oz. packet!(McCormick brand)

I have been doing 'stealth' shopping; going every week picking up necessary items and throwing a few non important groceries on top. I don't buy much as I go to the store often.....a little here and a little there.... :)

My biggest gripe is the 'out of staters'; like Washington! We are 2 hours from Spokane and the border; but they still drive all the way up here and buy up our groceries. This is a small community, and only have two grocery stores to feed our population. I'm going to start leaving 3X5 cards under their windshields, and tell them to stay home!

More and more people are staying home, don't know what the lock down status is in your state but if it's like some states then eating out is not an option anymore, so they're cooking at home. Almost one year in and people are starting to figure out you need more than one pot/pan and one spoon and knife to cook a complete meal. I mean it can be done but it's nicer to have a full stocked kitchen.

Btw I'm seeing lots of ads for cooking gadgets, including pots and pans, on the tube recently. I thought it was because of the holiday season but the ads are still being aired.

Not food and should go in the ammo section, but I will post here as I am feeling dangerous today!!!

Went to the local gun store..... they are CLEANED OUT. Granted this is Academy Sports, but it is our local place to buy. Anyways, it used to be centerfire and rimfire was out. Now all calibers of all types except for 2 dozen boxes of 28 gauge is gone.

Yep those hundreds of boxes of 12 gauge bird shot are all gone!

As well as anything related to reloading.... the whole area was empty except for a single die (unknow caliber). It looked like someone came buy and just bought everything in sight......

Even the gun safes were all gone. All they had left was a pair of "heavy security" locking cabinets that they call gun safes.

I get that being right off of two major interestates and a hwy that goes from coast to coast we're getting a lot of out of staters in the greater Des Moines Area. They arrive with big box trucks/vans or a huge truck towing a huge trailer and they buy up everything, hitting multiple stores when they are here.

I understand that, but door dash has been BOOMING here and I figured people were still eating out, just not going to get it. Either way..... a bit scary to say the least.
