Freetown - Sierra Leone's government on Saturday urged the public not to panic as it announced that more than 100 people had been quarantined following a new death from Ebola just as the country seemed to have overcome the epidemic.

The World Health Organisation on Friday confirmed that a 22-year-old woman who died after falling ill near the Guinean border last week had tested positive for the tropical fever.

The announcement came a day after west Africa was celebrating the end of the outbreak after Liberia became the last of the three worst-hit countries in the region to be declared Ebola-free.

Sierra Leone had received the all-clear last November, and Guinea in December.
Health officials in Freetown said they had placed a total of 109 people who had been in contact with the student before her death in isolation.

Of those, 28 were considered "high risk" and three contacts had yet to be located, Ishmael Tarawally, the national coordinator of the Office of National Security, said at a press conference.

"We are worried and concerned about this new development but call on the general public not to panic and more than ever before, all Sierra Leoneans must work together to prevent further infection," he said.

The woman died in the northern Magburaka township in the district of Tonkolili but Tarawally said "active case investigations" were ongoing in all the districts where the victim was known to have recently travelled.

Those include the districts of Kambia, Port Loko, Bombali and Freetown.
"The source of infection and route of transmission is being investigated and the government urges all Sierra Leoneans to continue being vigilant," Tarawally added.

The country's chief medical officer, Dr Brima Kargbo, said that when the woman arrived at Magburaka Government Hospital she showed "no signs or symptoms that fitted the case definition of Ebola".

"She had no fever or redness of the eyes when she was examined at the outpatient ward. What was detected was dizziness. We are now going to revisit the Ebola case definition," he added.

The Ebola outbreak, which began in Guinea in December 2013, killed more than 11,000 people and was the deadliest outbreak of the virus yet.

Great, another new strain floating around. This coupled with the "experts" complaining that Quarantines are "Stupid and Wrong" and probably throwing a fit that it didn't kill nearly enough people in the west. Will probably mean they will do everything possible to get this virus ove to the west as soon as possible and then do absolutely nothing at all to contain it. (Since the Experts seem to think there's no reason to...)

I was scared last year and I'm not looking forward to more of the same or worse this year :(

Ebola is Back In Sierra Leone

Jan 17 2016, 3:16am CST | by Luigi Lugmayr

The WHO just declared Africa Ebola free, but new reports say its back.

Last week the WHO declared Africa as Ebola free, but warned that flare-ups are possible. On the weekend Sierra Leone has put over 100 people into quarantine after a woman died of Ebola.

The woman who died has possibly exposed 27 others to the Ebola virus. The Sierra Leone government urges the public not to panic as the quarantine measures have been announced. The WHO says that the Sierra Leone government acted rapidly to respond to this new case. Through the country’s new emergency operations centre, a joint team of local authorities, WHO and partners are investigating the origin of the case, identifying contacts and initiating control measures to prevent further transmission.

"We are now at a critical period in the Ebola epidemic as we move from managing cases and patients to managing the residual risk of new infections,” said Dr Bruce Aylward, WHO’s Special Representative for the Ebola Response. “We still anticipate more flare-ups and must be prepared for them.”

Sierra Leone is still in a 90-day period of enhanced surveillance following the declaration on 7 November 2015 of the end of Ebola transmission in the country. This period is designed to ensure no hidden chains of transmission have been missed and to detect any new flare-ups of the disease.

But Obama said he cured this, remember.

Next strain would probably be worse and more resilient even if it didn't have any genetic 'help' along the way.

It's almost like they have a plan.

BTW, the Spanish Flu came in three waves. The first wave was very mild. The second wave was the one that made the history books.

Ebola doesn't have to kill in massive numbers to be nasty. You can survive super-TB if they remove the infected parts of the lungs, but I don't imagine the patient ever really gets back to where they were before the disease.

By the way, does anyone have a newer death toll more than "about 11,300 people" (which is what they've been throwing out since August 2015).

I think that they have had a lot of cough, cough, "flu" deaths but nope, no Ebola until now.
