CUDAHY, Calf. -- Fire crews treated 17 children and 9 adults after a plane dumped jet fuel near Cudahy and South Los Angeles schools, according to the Los Angeles County Fire Department.

Numerous children reported skin irritation and a noxious smell at the schools Tuesday shortly after noon.

Over 70 firefighters and paramedics from the L.A. County Fire Department and the Los Angeles Fire responded to the hazmat incident at 93rd Street Elementary School, Park Avenue Elementary School and Jordan High School.

No one was transported to a hospital and no evacuation orders were issued for the surrounding areas.

A Delta Airlines flight dumped the fuel on its return to Los Angeles International Airport shortly after takeoff.

Delta Airlines issued the following statement:

"Shortly after takeoff, Flight 89 from LAX to Shanghai experienced an engine issue requiring the aircraft to return to LAX. The aircraft landed safely after an emergency fuel release to reduce landing weight."

School officials said students and staff were on the playground when they may have been sprayed or inhaled fumes. Paramedics were immediately called and staff members were visiting every classroom to check on students and staff, according the to the Los Angeles Unified School District.

Sounds like they didn't get high enough for a safe release. Had to get rid of it.

Most commercial aircraft that had a dump capability had it disabled. Few aircraft have it now. I am curious as to what they were flying.

The department said it had a total of 44 patients from four schools: Park Avenue Elementary, Tweedy Elementary, Graham Elementary and San Gabriel Avenue Elementary.

And if the DEC finds out you spilled a half gallon of fuel on the ground then will show up with backholes and barrows and dig everything up. Put all the dirt in the barrows and cart them off as hazardous waist. Then they will charge you tens of thousands of dollars for their work.

Isn't jet fuel essentually kerosene ?

If so, then this whole thing has been blown way out of proportion. IMHO

We've got a bunch of so called educators that figured real quick that they can hit the lawsuit lottery with this.

It is indeed kerosene. Still, you don't want your kids doused with it. That's why there are guidelines for dumping fuel, which the crew seem to have violated. Figuring out why will take some time, but Juan gives a good summary of their situation.

He had a compressor stall on one of two engines, not much time to play nice.

At any rate they had little confidence they had much time, not knowing what the root cause might be. The questionable part is in dumping at such low altitude after telling the controller they weren't going to dump. They were apparently capable of landing with full fuel, so their decision-making is going to be the focus of the investigation. They weren't in a panic, since they delayed their turn onto approach for a couple minutes so they could work the checklists. Couple careers on the line here. Tough time for the pilots and their families as they wait for the investigation to grind out.
