A van pulled over for a moving violation this morning led to the discovery of 20 illegal immigrants, authorities said.

According to Tim Counts of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), Iowa City officers stopped the van for a moving violation on I-80 between Dubuque Street and Prairie du Chien Road at about 10 a.m. Twenty people were in the van when officers approached, and none was able to provide documentation of their residency, Counts said.

Immigration agents were notified and took the group into custody for interviewing, which Counts said "will likely go on for some time."

The nationality of the people in custody was not known, but Counts said all are believed to be in the country illegally. Counts said the people, who are being questioned at the Cedar Rapids ICE office, will be held at one or more county jails, though locations have not been determined.
