This thread is a companion thread for PJ’s thread about what you are doing.

What have I done,
strawberry patch expanded. I took some kiddos old swimming pools and used en for raised beds. I’ll post photos later.

This thread is NOT about what you would like to do, this thread is for encouragement and accountability for Getting things DONE.

Next, planting the misses bleeding hearts and then cutting some lumber for raised beds.

Taking me longer than I used to, to get things done, but not too bad 8 weeks after cardiac surgery. (And I don’t lift anything too heavy yet).

Getting the sea wall rebuilt on the secondary BOL. Having to be dug by hand. Hired some help for that. Already have the dump truck of dirt that will have to be hand trucked down to the refill area. Boat slip inspected and in better shape than we feared. Got the trees cut back from over the roof. Added another 15 acres to our landholdings near our primary BOL. Land, the only thing they aren’t making more of. If we don’t put cattle or trees on it, and the world doesn’t permanently fall apart, our kids will have a place to put a home in the future.

And future son-in-law goes into the Army on 4/15 so it looks like our daughter is getting married a lot sooner than we anticipated. He’ll be in basic, OTS, and some other kind of training for roughly six months so she’ll continue to live at home but after that they’ll more than likely be moving to NC. Another one takes flight from the nest.

This stuff is on-going for me. Never done. Never enough. This past week:
  • Fruit trees and strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, blackberries fertilized
  • Tomato starts are up and looking precious as are bell peppers, jalapenos and chili. Squash and cucumbers started yesterday, should be up in the next few days.
  • JADAM fertilizers and insecticides all made - enough for the season.
  • Attached another downspout diverter in an inconspicuous area for rainwater harvesting.
  • First aid kits in two vehicles inventoried, organized and re-supplied.
  • IDPA match was today. Blew 120 rounds down range in two toys.

Waiting for the soil temps to hit 56F so I can start planting some greens. We're doing a CSA again this year so aside from spring greens, green beans, yellow wax beans, and herbs, I won't be gardening. The beans are for canning since my stock of home canned beans is starting to get low.

Why the CSA? The spirit is willing but our bodies have had enough, and we lack sufficeint sunlight in our yard to grow crops like tomatoes, peppers, etc.

CSA --> Community Supported Agriculture.

While many of the CSA's in my area (central Iowa) are "organic" ours is not, it's "near organic" because life and sh*t happens. Last summer our CSA farm got crop dusted and 90% of her tomato crops were destroyed, she raises several varieties of romas for those of us that can for sauce and the like. The guy doing the crop dusting also destroyed about 60% of the grapes in the vineyard our CSA abuts up against. Hopefully he was fined accordingly!

The new layers come in this Thursday, along with the broilers, with the turkeys it's first come first serve as they came in This past Sat. but we didn't get to town. So dh left a bit ago to do errands and hopefully there are 4 turkeys left. This is the first year nether of the farm stores were allowing folks to order what they wanted with turkeys and one isn't ordering them for anyone any more. :( Two turkeys for us and 2 for the neighbor.

Dh is hoping to get the garden area tilled tomorrow before more rain/snow comes in on Wed., if nothing else comes up. On Sat. he brought down the the straw and etc. out of the chicken coop and took it in there.

Also getting ready for daughter and son in law who will be here around next Monday from AZ. We will be helping his mom get things ready for her new manufactured home. The old one has to be pulled out yet and we will most likely be taking our camper up there to Orofino, ID. for her to live in while all that is being done. Her old place is literally falling apart. The tree that fell on it last fall didn't help.

I am diligently keeping every little thing topped off and to do that, I keep a close watch on inventory and what we use. It's time to do an inventory on all over the counter meds, shampoos, t-paste, etc. and top it off this week.

We are preparing to work from home if the economy affects DH's job and that will involve getting concrete poured and, of course, a new piece of equipment. We are doing all the things for that.

My main prep this time of the year is all about the garden. The majority of my starts are started but I've been focusing on growing food. I'll be doing flower starts in the next few days...got to have food for the soul as well as the body. I have no idea where I will put the produce I can this year but I will cross that bridge when I come to it...there may need to be additions to my jar supply which I will address in the next couple of weeks, maybe sooner. I'm keeping a close inventory on home canned food and jars.

I'll monitor the long term forecast and determine when to plant the items I direct sew...I never rush that. I want the nights warm enough to not stunt any of my precious seedlings. Lastly, for the garden, I've got to back my ears, hitch up the trailer and get more cattle panels and t-post for my new tomato trellises before they go up in price again. This is the last rearrangement and additions to our garden...I cannot manage more and I'm not getting any younger.

Lastly, I'll be doing a deep clean of the whole place. I'm practically foot loose and fancy free now. I closed down the wholesale portion of my business last year because of the rising price of "costs of goods sold" so I'm only doing retail and learning to love my craft again. When I closed off the wholesale, I was also in the middle of selling my parents place which turned into a very stressful situation that didn't end until fall and I had PTSD over it for the next several months so I'm just now realizing the freedom of cutting back on the business side of things.

To be honest, this is my life on a regular basis. I'm not really doing anything I don't do routinely with the exception of preparing for DH to be totally self employed again, if things go south. I've been in this mindset for about twenty years now.

I just missed the river of red this season. It happens about once every 3 years. It is a case where the Australian bottle brushes ( 25 ft tall now ) put out their flowers to begin spring, ( and some times fall ).

As we have two near the house, they have so many flowers that both of the entire bushes are covered 100% in red flowers. It is something else to say the least........

The bees loved it..... now they are after the fruit trees.

Turkey pen completed and 4 turkey poults installed. They like it! Canning everyday the berries that are coming in. Hate to get behind. New methods of weed control instituted. We will see how it all works out. Continued spraying of orchards hoping to get lots of fruit this year after getting almost nothing because of late freezes last year. Seeding new pasture for milk cow. Organization and cleaning continue for all areas so they never get disorganized and messy. I didn't mention praying our praying without ceasing crying out for mercy for all of us.
