Support Alternative means for supply of power, water and waste disposal.

It seems we look at prepping from different vantage points. Sometime the concept is to manage a short term disruption, sometime maybe a temporary short or long term change in lifestyle and sometime some people look to a permanent change in the system that we refer to as TEOTWAWKI.

I am curious as to which of the 3 condition (or any other) anyone has in mind and what you have prepared to accomplish power, water and waste disposal.

Obviously this is more toward a mobile condition rather then where one has a permanent place to reside, come what may.

This is a public area, so we might need to be a little discrete.

One thing you could do is if you have a small lot or access to one, is dispose of greywater in the methods described by Art Ludwig's "Create an Oasis with Greywater".

It's a very good little book and it has some very simple, effective means of taking care of this.
For sewage, I would look into Joseph Jenkin's Humanure Handbook.

A sawdust toilet is very effective and a cheap alternative to a commercial composting toilet.

As far as power goes, you have one of two choices: solar, or a generator with batteries and an inverter. The difference is in your means of power generation.
If you can afford it, a small solar system is the way to go.

You should make this a poll with all those choices. I choose short-term, but would like to be able to be prepared for a longer term change in lifestyle. For power we have a generator and limited propane for cooking and heating. We do have some solar powered and wind up gadgets, but could definitely go for a bigger portable solar system. We also have a solar oven which would really come in handy and a very large thermos for some slow cooking. For water, we'll just have to do it the old fashioned way of hauling it in, then purifying it with a Katadyn filter. For waste disposal, again using the old-fashioned method of digging a deep hole or using some alternate leach field method.

I’ve been here for nearly 6 years and never posted a poll, haven’t made the effort to know how.

Anyway as to the options, mine is the 3rd, which is a permanent change in the system. Permanent in that electricity will not be available and a pressurized public water system and disposal system unavailable.

Therefore, I have developed a portable 12 V solar system, a 12V water pump and barrels, and unmentionable (illegal) disposal and use of waste to accompany a travel trailer. However, none of the above is for a hasty retreat. That prep has to be immediate and mobile. Food, fuel and water for 6 months should be the object there.

It is not meant to make this a prep thread but rather a RV, TT thread where utilities are not available.
