Farm Apples

Molon Labe!
So, I've got about 8 apple trees on this place, and some are obviously turning red, some are green.

I do not know what kinds they are.

Question: How does one 'know' when they're ready to pick? I'm stumped.

Thanks all!

Cut one open. If the seeds are dark then they are ready to pick. Told to me by an old orchard man long ago.

Enjoy.

Yep, the seeds tell the tale. On every variety I know, they should be nearly black before you pick for storage.

They will be perfectly ripe... the day AFTER the deer eat them.

The deer have been eating them for weeks. They look like African gazelles, standing on their hind legs, stealing my apples! :tng:

I'm going to cut a few apples today and check the seed colors.

Thanks everyone!
