Buttigieg calls for scrapping death penalty, supporting slavery reparations

What to know about Pete Buttigieg and how, despite only two terms as mayor of South Bend, Indiana, he plans to capture the democratic presidential nomination.

Democratic presidential candidate Pete Buttigieg on Thursday called for abolishing the death penalty and voiced support for reparations for descendants of slaves.

Pointing to sentencing disparities, the South Bend, Indiana mayor said that “it is time to face the simple fact that capital punishment as seen in America has always been a discriminatory practice. We would be a fairer and safer country when we join the ranks of modern nations who have abolished the death penalty.”

The one-time long shot for the Democratic nomination, who’s seen his stock rise in recent weeks, made his comments during an appearance in New York before the National Action Network (NAN), a civil rights organization founded by Al Sharpton.

Buttigieg now joins several other of the higher-profile Democratic presidential contenders in calling for an end to capital punishment. Among them are Sens. Bernie Sanders of Vermont, Kamala Harris of California, and Cory Booker of New Jersey.

Former Rep. Beto O'Rourke of Texas and former Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper have said they'd suspend the death penalty if they make it to the White House.

The death penalty is disproportionally applied to minorities. Black Americans make up 13 percent of the country’s population but 42 percent of the people on death row, according to statistics from the NAACP.

Each presidential candidate speaking at this week'S NAN conference has been asked their stance on reparations, and Buttigieg was no exception.

Buttigieg said “I would” and explained why the issue is “so important.”

“The county as a whole is effectively segregated by race and the resources are different. There is a direct connection between exclusion in the past and exclusion in the present,” he emphasized.

The idea of slavery reparations for black Americans is at least partially backed by six other Democratic presidential candidates so far – Harris, Sen. Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts, O’Rourke, former San Antonio Mayor Julian Castro, who served as housing secretary under President Barack Obama, businessman and entrepreneur Andrew Yang, and Rep. Tulsi Gabbard of Hawaii, who has co-sponsored a bill in the House of Representatives to study and consider reparation payments.

Buttigieg – in a campaign video released early on Thursday – hinted that he would formally declare his candidacy for president at an event in South Bend on April 14. The candidate has enjoyed large crowds on the campaign trail, a blitz of media attention and a surge in fundraising over the past month.

Reparations from Dave Chappelle , most have probably seen this but the whole idea is so laughable this needs to be seen, I'll gladly give reparations to anyone who actually picked cotton.

Maybe that 13 percent commits 42 percent of the murders?
Don’t like being executed? Stop committing murders.
So simple a caveman could understand it.

i think it is amazing that the dems are all calling for reparations for slavery when as of 1861 the Only americnas who owned slaves, North and South were all democrats.
i truly want to see someone bring this up on some news show interviewing a dem advocating reparations and ask them how the democrat party is planning on paying reparations to the blacks in the US and watch them sputter. i am against reparations by the way, not one dime for this phony idea....

we fought the civil war (in part) to free the slaves from the democrats. as dinesh dsouza says, Some americans owned slaves and Other americans stopped them.

In my family: 5 generations back owned slaves on Dad's side and 4 generations on the maternal side. So I guess that makes me guilty somehow?

But, I'm also 1/64 black. (and 1/32 Amer. Indian)
So
I'm pretty sure I should get some of that reparations $$$ also.

But does that mean I have to pay myself reparations ?

How will these reparations work exactly?
:screw:

It may just be a matter of semantics, and not dissing you, but that's not quite right. U. S. Grant was a republican, and he owned slaved, and those that he didn't own, his wife did, as noted here:

When the Republican Party met at the 1868 Republican National Convention in Chicago, the delegates unanimously nominated Grant for president and Speaker of the House Schuyler Colfax for vice president.[259]

Julia Dent Grant came from a slave-owning family and was an apologist for slavery throughout her life and the Civil War. The Grants owned slaves that came from Julia's father and Grant himself was responsible for supervising them. These slaves were not freed until 1865 when Missouri officially abolished slavery.

Grant actually owned one slave himself as well:
Grant himself owned a slave named William Jones, acquired from his father-in-law. At a time when he could have desperately used the money from the sale of Jones, Grant signed a document that gave him his freedom.
Grant freed this slave in 1859.

It should also be noted that the IMPORTATION of slaves was abolished in 1807 in the UNITED States. In the Confederate Constitution the importation of slaves was also outlawed.

The importation of African slaves was outlawed by an act of Congress passed in 1807, and signed into law by President Thomas Jefferson. The law was rooted in an obscure passage in the U.S. Constitution, which had stipulated that importing slaves could be prohibited 25 years after the ratification of the Constitution.

International Slave Trade Outlawed In America in 1807

The only slaves during the civil war were either imported before 1807, or were born here.

After the CW with 650k men killed and who knows how many civilians the place looked like Haiti after a Hurricane. No roads, few homes still in existence and none of the technology or medicine or much of anything else was actually built be slaves.

They can go **** themselves=prove you were a slave or the child of a slave and we can talk. Hell, prove who your daddy....

we are officially done Peter Rabbit

this is my suggestion for your campaign theme music as you enter the room

Skating Away on the thin ice of a new day Jethro Tull

Meanwhile back in the year one
When you belonged to no one
You didn't stand a chance, son
If your pants were un done

'Cause you were bred,
for humanity
And sold
to society
One day you'll wake up,
in the present day
A million generations
removed from expectations
Of being who you really want to be

Skating away, skating away, skating away
On the thin ice of the new day

So as you push off from the shore <-------
Won't you turn your head once more
And make your peace with everyone

For those who choose to stay
Will live just one more day
To do the things they should've done

And as you cross the wilderness
Spinning in your emptiness
If you have to, pray

Looking for a sign,
that the universal minds
Has written you into their passion play

Skating away, skating away, skating away
On the thin ice of the new day

And as you cross the circle line
Well, the ice wall creaks behind
You're a rabbit on the run!!!!

And the silver splinters fly
In the corner of your eye
Shining in the setting sun

Well, do you ever get the feeling
That the story's too damn real
And in the present - tense?

Or that everybody's on the stage
And it seems like you're the only
Person sitting in the audience?

Skating away, skating away, skating away
On the thin ice of the new day
Skating away, skating away, skating away

Ulysses S. Grant was a Republican president who once had slaves. However, there’s some nuance that should be considered before this factoid gets repeated out of context.

First, Grant was not personally highly invested in the subject of slavery. He used slaves that were owned by his father-in-law, only one of which did he legally own. Furthermore, he freed that slave rather than selling him, which was a significant opportunity cost.

Secondly, at the time in question the Republican Party was a fledgling and poorly-defined entity, and Grant didn’t clearly associate himself with it until a decade later after Lincoln had become president.

Thirdly, this type of historical trivium is fundamentally deceptive because institutions change and reinvent themselves. That is, any comparison about “x number of Democrats had slaves while only y number of Republicans did” is fundamentally meaningless because it insinuates associations that aren’t relevant to contemporary politics. The pool of Democrats who could have owned slaves is much larger than the pool of Republicans who could have simply because the Democratic Party is significantly older. And while the Republican Party was established with an interest in the Abolitionist Movement, it lost any claim to being less racist by instituting the Southern Strategy to elect Nixon.

Some individual Republicans deserve credit for acknowledging the injustice of the Southern Strategy, but as an institution the party has failed to adequately address the subject in a way that would indicate sincere contrition or a will to fix the problem.

It should also be noted:

In August, Grant applied for a position as county engineer, believing his education qualified him for the job. His application came with thirty-five notable recommendations, but Grant correctly assumed the position would be given on the basis of political affiliation and was passed over by the Free Soil and Republican county commissioners because he was believed to share his father-in-law's Democratic sentiments.[93] In the 1856 presidential election, Grant cast his first presidential vote for Democrat James Buchanan, later saying he was really voting against Republican John C. Frémont over concern that his anti-slavery position would lead to southern secession and war and because he considered Frémont to be a shameless self-promoter.[94] Although Grant was not an abolitionist, he was not considered a "slavery man", and could not bring himself to force slaves to do work.[95]

My only point in this is you stated that only Dem's owned slaves, by 1861 which was incorrect. It's kind of like saying Lincoln's EO 95 applied to all states, when it didn't, it only applied to the states that were in rebellion, at the time was only 10. The actual number of states in the Confederacy was 13.

There were actually quite a number of Federalist, who one would assume were Republicans at the time (which also isn't quite true since there were other parties) that took their slaves with them, to attend them, in their fight with the South, basically Dem's.

The clown car just gets weirder and weirder. I think each democrat candidate is trying to outdo the others through putting forth more psychotic ideas than the others. The smell of "liberal fruitcake" is strong on this candidate.

Compatriots, how do y’all seek to maintain alive the Confederate heritage within your family & relatives? This would be a great discussion point for any Sons of Confederate Camp or United Daughters of the Confederacy Chapter.

At the time of the Southern War For Independence, my ancestors were fighting my beloved French. It was a war that lasted 29 hard and violent years–1854-1883. This meant, with Imperial Vietnam’s defeat, a century of humiliating French colonial rule over a refined, civilised Vietnamese culture that had existed since 213 BC–before the French even existed. The haughty French (I so love France–I run a French Literature Club) were shocked to encounter such an elegant culture that they had wanted to conquer and was even more refined than their own. The French writer, François Nourissier, wrote, ‘Vietnam was the only colony that the French ever loved.’

You will never hear of any Vietnamese demanding REPARATION like the Leftist Democrats or race card activists in the US. In French Indochina, we Vietnamese and French fought each other bitterly. We killed each other viciously. And we loved each other ardently.

Every nation in the world owes REPARATION to somebody ELSE. This is ridiculous. The French Embassy is organising its annual Spring Fête de la Francophonie, celebrating French world culture. Without the French Empire, including Southern Louisiana, where would French culture have DEVELOPED? General Beauregard would have loved it!!! Oh I love this great event. France has separate tables for Canada & my beloved Québec! Very diplomatic of them. On opposite sides of the hall! Vive le Québec libre!

France, like the South, is essential to my life. Bad things happened around the world! My ancestors participated in many great actions–including a few evil ones. However, as a general rule, they did heroic deeds. I’m proud of them. History happens. And, we can also see, that great things happen following evil things in great cultures–such as with the two great world civilisations (India is a great civilisation but lacks the global impact of the other two): Western European Culture & East Asian Culture. NO REPARATIONS. Don’t like this? Go home to the wretched regions of your ancestors where your kinfolk live in utter misery. Sorry. I’m not politically correct.

At any rate, back to my original intention. I have a precious 13 year-old god-daughter. Her mother is my best friend since Yale days. Her mom & I have argued gently and lovingly for decades about the WBTS. She has said to me many times over the years, ‘The Original Sin of the South was slavery.’

I beg to disagree. New England merchants sold slaves to the South where their labour was needed on farms and plantations, so this was not simply a Southern matter–but an American matter. The North was not conducive to mass enslaved agricultural labour. They needed factory workers. After the WBTS, the North had their own semi-enslaved white working class–including child labourers devoting up to 13 hours a day in order to survive. Unlike white Southern slaveowners who provided cradle to grave care for their black slaves in their sickness or disability, large Yankee business owners did not share that same humane concern. Northern white labourers, including all these poor, abused, broken children, in dismal, Dickensian Yankee factories, were tossed out without a care if they were of no further use.

Yes, slavery is evil, but this was something that was universal. Slavery was the backbone of our ancestral civilisation, the Greco-Roman World. Slavery has been universal for at least 5,000 years. Slavery still exists in the Muslim world. The monstrous evil of sexual slavery, which is a major concern of mine, exists everywhere, and I want to help destroy it.
As it happens, my ancestors ruled Vietnam between 1225-1400 (the Tran Dynasty). Our family abolished slavery in Vietnam. This primarily meant household slavery & some country slavery. We didn’t entirely get rid of serfdom, but we got rid of slavery, as much as we could, in its purest form–beyond household slavery to include parents selling their daughters into sexual slavery. This was the Middle Ages. We did our best.

We established a form of temporary tenant farming so that the landowners would be paid off, not only by the imperial government, but also by tithes given by the former slaves, who now owned their own land plots with imperial protection. There were no revolts. There were no rebellions. Landowners & slaveowners felt they were fairly treated by the Tran Dynasty.

See what my ancestors did, and then see how criminal Lincoln & the Yankees behaved in what they did against the South. What the North did was NOT necessary & indeed, criminal in its unconstitutional invasion of the South. It costs the lives of over 800,000 military lives according to a new BBC account (which bypasses the now outdated late 19th Century 625,000 figure); moreover, we still don’t know the final accounting for the horrendous atrocities against Southern women, girls, and children. This is an area of research which is still in its infancy. Are there anyone left in mainstream academic “Civil War” scholarship willing to to research the horrendous atrocities against white Southern & Native American Confederate civilians?

I can tell you, that there were terrible things that happened to General Stand Watie’s people after the War, as revenge by the Yankees for being the last Confederate General to surrender two months after Appomattox–and, racially speaking, for being a Confederate Indian.

I have read an excruciating diary account about a Yankee atrocity which included a gang-rape of a young Southern girl which drove her into madness. Cf. Mary Chestnut Boykin’s Diary, edited by my friend, Pulitzer Prize winning C. Vann Woodward, the greatest Southern historian of the 20th Century.

When she was 8 years old, my god-daughter was over at my place for a cookout. She blurted out, ‘my grandfather and my uncles survived the War!’ They, and their two cousins (who didn’t survive the War–she doesn’t know this yet) served in A.P. Hill’s Division from Seven Pines to Appomattox. They fought at Second Manassas, Sharpsburg, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, The Wilderness, Petersburg, & the final Appomattox push before our surrender. 125 members, including my god-daughter’s grandfather and uncles, out of the original 450-500 original members of their regiment remained at Marse Robert’s surrender.

When she is old enough to drive, I want to take my god-daughter down to one of the nearby Virginia battlefields where her ancestors so bravely fought.

Fredericksburg would be great. It’s a beautiful historic town. Great restaurants. You can visit the battlefield, & if you have a daughter or a god-daughter who’s not a WBTS buff, it’s still a great trip. But my god-daughter at age 13, is proud of her Confederate heritage. I’m doing my best to stoke low-burning flames despite her sweet but anti-Confederate parents–and her mom is my best friend who still asked me to be her godfather 13 years ago, although I’ve always been unreconstructed.

Clearly they are concerned about the number of "blacks" being eliminated from American society by the death penalty.

The number being eliminated by the death penalty is minuscule compared to the number being eliminated by "black on black" crime.

"Blacks" kill their own and others indiscriminately without mention by the press, celebrities, politicians or the general public.

A wise man once said in the 1950s that if you gave every "black" in the country a gun there would soon be no blacks in the country.

His wisdom has proven sound.

Where are they finding these people?

They don't find these people (I prefer to call them idiots)... they create them using ceaseless indoctrination by the public school system, government programs and agendas seeded in the entertainment industry which, BTW, now includes the news media.
