Oh boy, I hope those punks crawl away with new mud puddles stomped into their various anatomies. Evie's crew needs to vent. Terrible thing to find out you're on the wrong end of everyone's pent up anger and frustrations.

A great big thank you Pac. You have made my day with these new chapters.

ya know that Evie's "gang" is just needin' to burn off some of all that "energy". Looks like they will get that opportunity real soon!

That gang didn't know what they were getting themselves into when they messed with Evie's crew. Thank you Pac.

As a family and a community, the group felt dazed and heartsick. A life is still a life, and to have such brutal events happen in front of them all, was shocking. Cassy was showing the stress by weeping constantly, unable to pull herself together. Her baby reacted by being especially active, acting agitated in the womb.

Clora and Sandy had to retreat to the bushes to empty their stomachs. Even the men were green around the gills. It was the Lord's blessing that Christy and Willie were already bedded down in the tents and missed the grisly scene.

Evie asked them all to gather in a circle to pray, lending strength through clasped hands and touching shoulders. Evie finished praying and invited the others to speak their piece. Slowly, one by one the halting words poured forth as people purged the hurt from their souls.

Quietly they disbanded, walking to the tents to sleep if they could. It was a profound impact that they had to deal with.

Cassy had fallen into a exhausted sleep, her baby rumbling with the effects of the flood of adrenalin. About midnight, Will woke Ev and asked to borrow his pickup, the baby was coming early.

Ev gathered up the dogs and sent the expectant couple on their way to the hospital, assuring Cassy that Willie would be well taken care of.

Wayne and Ben were on guard duty guarding the camp as their loved ones slept.

You're a master Pac, I like the way you handled that, and now finding a new place is more urgent than ever. Thank you for another chapter so quickly.

Early morning found the camp working on breakfast. Like it or not, they had to grocery shop today. Despite strict admonitions to wash hands frequently, a bout of Montezuma revenge was happening and more soap and TP was needed. The women's hands were raw and chapped from the daily chores, and Willie had a chapped bottom that needed a zinc oxide paste.

Evie kept the list and added to it frequently. They had just secured the dogs to the pickup when Borg and Mark, Davis and MN cane driving in. This time they followed MN and wound through the area on narrow 2 lane roads.

Evie and Sandy rode with MN, and peppered him with questions about the man and his place.

"My Uncle will be here, as kind of a elder care advocate for his friend. Walter Bailey is in his late 80's, has cataracts and terminal cancer," Mark explained. "The Doctor gave him 6 months to live, 9 months ago. I think the old boy won't let himself die until he gets his place taken care of. Nobody wants it because of the work involved, and a single family doesn't have the available man power to work the truck gardens."

Evie's ears perked up at the mention of gardens; and then the fruit orchard, nut orchard and berries were icing on the cake. "The tenant houses aren't much, small two bedroom affairs," Mark continued. "Walt's land backs up to a tree plantation and there is deer, raccoon and bird depredation to contend with."

"You would have to live in the main house and care for Walt as long as he lives, but Hospice comes every other day to administer pain meds. I also have to warn you, Walt is a little cranky and set in his ways and his house isn't the cleanest. He keeps firing the housekeepers we find for him." he chuckled at the string of cleaners that had come and gone.

I love how you wrote about how the family dealt with the killing. Shows they are truly sorry for what they had to do. Their faith is always there to sustain them and lift them up. Did Cassie have her baby yet? I think the family is going to like the place they are going to see.
Thank you for the chapters Pac. They are awesome.

Mark wasn't kidding when he said the place was cluttered and messy. Personally, Evie thought she had been in dumps that were cleaner. Walter Bailey was disgusting in his habits. He chewed and with his poor eyesight couldn't always hit the coffee can he was using as a spittoon.

"She's small but mighty," MN warned the crusty old farmer. "She's just about like Tesse, when she gives you 'the look', mighty warriors tremble."

"Hummph," Walter thrummed deep in his throat. "Come over here woman and stand under the light so's I can see you. You peaked and dried up? or you got some heft to ya?"

"I've got all the heft I need," Evie told him smartly. "I don't believe you are in any position to lift me up."

"Feisty old broad," Walter approved, "that's a good point."

Evie almost missed his sharp comeback, her eyes were glued on the monstrous 6 eyed Monarch wood stove holding court along the kitchen wall. "That thing work?" she snapped at Walter, disregarding his facetiousness for a second.

"Depends on what your lookin at," he shot back, "I ain't keepin track of your eyes."

"The stove, don't be so smart."

"Of course it does, I ain't had a good cup 'o coffee since Tessee passed," he sounded affronted, thinking his bride's dearly held stove was being disrespected.

"Good, where's your coffee? Dear God, these used grounds are moldy. Have you been drinking this?" Evie demanded.

"Sure, ain't got nothin else."

"Clora, Sandy, get some wood and start a fire. I'm gonna scrub this coffee pot, it's a wonder you don't have trench mouth," she scolded. "Go get your self outta this kitchen. I don't know if we will be able to make any deals or not. But this is a sorry mess you let Tessee's kitchen fall into. Now shoo!" she commanded.

Cheryl grabbed a rag and a dishpan and commenced washing the stacks and mounds of food encrusted plates and utensils. The pots and pans were so dirty that she gagged.

It took two hours to make any headway in the filthy kitchen. Evie served MN and Walter and MN's Uncle fresh coffee and small sugar biscuits she whipped up with the limited supplies on hand. The men sat around the huge claw footed table, wiped clean thank you, and drank a whole potful of Evie's strong brew and ate every biscuit.

Outside, the men stood on the porch and looked at the lush and fertile ground overrun with weeds and unkempt crops. Ev was down rooting in the bare patches with his hands, tasting the soil and grabbing handsfull to see how friable it was. Wayne and Ben strolled down to the start of the berry patch where Ev was crawling on his hands and knees. He looked at them with eyes bright with unshed tears, "this will do, this will DO!" he emphasized.

I do believe old Walter has met his match and Evie and the crew have a home. That is after they get it cleaned. Those ladies are going to have their hands looking like prunes by the time that place is clean and shiny again. Thank you Pac. This chapter had me in smiles with Evie showing her feisty side again.

"Lainey honey. will you call the men in, Sandy and Clora will you help with the fresh coffee and biscuits, it's time we got down to dealing." Evie cast the die, it was nitty gritty time.

The old table was expanded larger and places set for the guys. The dining room in the old three story house was enormous, built back when families had a dozen children or more. Evie could see the roof was a little iffy and needed repair, and that the old mortar and field rock foundation was crumbly in a few places.

The men tromped in, held up a few minutes while Ev beat the dirt from his clothes and shoes. He smiled broadly and winked at Evie to let her know the fields were a farmer's dream. He had snitched wild blackberries from the hedgerow and set the prized bounty on the table for sharing.

Delicately shuddering at the thought of berries from Ev's used handkerchief, Evie passed on the treat. The children each had a small glass of coffee milk and biscuits and they were busy eating. Cheryl had spoken to each of them explaining how important the grownup's meeting was, and that they could listen but not interrupt. She got a promise that they would be good, but smiled inwardly. It was like telling the wind to stop blowing.

When everyone was settled, Evie opened by asking what Walter had to sell and what was the price.

Walter explained his three hundred acre farm right down to the two abandoned wells and the skunk family living under the corner of the packing shed. He mentioned he was asking five hundred thousand, and when Evie frowned mightily, he backtracked a bit. Walter allowed that had been his original price and since the economy was so bad, he guessed he might have to get a bit more reasonable.

Evie just nodded. The man wasn't trying to high-jack them, he needed paid for his investments.

In turn Ben, Wayne and the rest of the family spoke their thoughts about what they had inspected. The conclusion, it was a good place that would require much renovation.

"We would like to make you an offer," Evie started the negotiations. "But first we need to hear what you expect from us."

MN's Uncle took over at this point. To make identities even more confusing, his name was Mark Walter, so he promptly became MW.

Davis and Borg had been sitting quietly, listening to Evie's performance. Each of them glad they weren't in the old gal's line of fire.

Davie elbowed Borg every time Evie made a good point, chuckling under his breath. Finally, Borg eased his chair far enough away that Davis's elbow couldn't reach him as he was trying to listen to the conversation and keep every thing legal.

MW started outlining the terms and conditions. Evie listened quietly. The terms were reasonable. A quarter of the purchase price down, payments by the month at 6% interest, and the total price of $425,000.00.

The Hanson clan held their breath. They had no idea if Grandma had that much money, and the problem of living expenses, taxes and refurbishment of the fields and houses would take thousands more.

"What about your care?" Evie asked with concern. "You are not capable of fending for yourself. Decent food would go a long way towards improving your health."

"Here's what I'm thinkin," Walter took over his part of the transaction. "You care for me until I die, and I will forgive half of the total cost."

"That's too generous," Evie countered. "We are willing to pay a fair and decent price, but we have some conditions of our own. The first is, we pay today and move in this afternoon."

Borg stirred in his chair, what in the world was Evie trying to do. Davis stiffened in the old oak spindle back he was sitting in and leaned forward.

"The second, we will pay cash and want to pay $375,000. You would be welcome to stay as long as you want, but the whole thing needs to be signed today. Take all the time you want, we shall go outside and walk the fields a bit."

The group walked out the door, leaving the M's and W's with surprised and stunned expressions.

Sitting on the stone fence, the Hanson's talked excitedly. "Can we swing this," was the most repeated question.

"Yes we can," Evie reassured them, as long as the total is under $375." She clammed up as Borg and Davis found their way to the group. Suddenly Evie had that inner voice telling her not to say anything more about the money in front of the two men.

Evie led the conversation, directing what topics would be discussed. It took a while but eventually the kids caught on and Ev gave a glowing description of the crop diversity. It was a good subterfuge that seemed to have Davis convinced, but didn't fool Borg one bit.

It was then that Borg realized that Mark wasn't with the group and he had no idea where his son was.

The Mark's last name was Swanson, and they took an hour to confer with Walter about his place and the intentions he had for the end of his life. "They's good people," Walter announced. "That old woman's done a damm fine job and she treats them real respectable like. They will do the same for her, and they would do the same for me. The farm is going to people that's care about the land, thats the most important thing to me You boy's have been real good to me, and I appreciate your helping."

The Swansons helped Walter write out a bill of sale, spelling out the terms and written conditions, witnessing it with their names.

MN went to the porch and hollered the Hanson clan in. They acted so calm and friendly, that Mark knew his Uncle's friend would be in good hands. Evie had a hidden clue. Something deep in her heart told her this would be the place for them, a really good farm to spend the rest of her life.

Evie sent Ben to Mark's car to retrieve the suitcase. Carefully climbing the stairs, she nearly ran face first into the solid bulk of Borg who was most displeased. "I urge you to reconsider what ever it is you are trying to do. This is ridiculous to tie yourself to a sick old man and obligate yourself to that amount of money. This is outrageous. I advise against it most strenuously."

"Thank you for your interest Borg, but we have come to the agreement as a family that this is what we want." Evie was firm and gentle in her refusal to listen to his advise.

Borg moved out of her way, but he was very unhappy. Davis sat on the wicker chair nearest the door and watched with sharpened interest as Evie painfully moved up the four steps into the house. His calculating eyes never left Borg as the enraged attorney stomped around the porch, fuming and muttering.

Evie felt a touch faint by the time she made it to the dining chair, and Clora and Lainey supported her with worried frowns. Walter slid the paper across the table toward the head of the clan and she read it. Passing the bill of sale to each of the members to read, Evie said she had only one change to make. The sale needed to be made out in all of their names, they were all in equally, including Ev and Cheryl. She had already explained that Will and Cassy wouldn't be included and the reason she gave made sense.

Walter shot a pen across the table and the members all wrote their names on the paper. Evie whispered to Ben and sent him to get the suitcase. Eyes got wide and the room went deathly silent as Evie counted out the stacks of ten thousand to a stack.

Borg narrowed his eyes, he was furious that he was unable to stop the transaction. That necessitated a different course of action.

Davis watched with studied indifference, seemingly casual but not really. He was a coiled snake ready to strike.

Evie looked sleepy and almost doddering, but she was very much aware of the reaction of the men.

Mark counted the money and nodded to his uncle that it was all there. Walter waved his hand to encompass the pile of money. "Thank you little lady, I am going to enjoy gittin to know you and your family. Can I have another cup of that good coffee?"

Evie went to get up and Clora laid a firm hand on her shoulder. "Let Sandy," Clora admonished. Sandy looked perturbed that she was disturbed in her inspection of Mark the nurse. Shooting Clora a dark look, she did as she was asked with a small but distinct flounce.

Cheryl couldn't help but snicker. She tried not to, but failed miserably. Wayne stood guard at the door and had to turn away to smile at the screen door. It looked like Sandy had been bitten hard, that little sharp toothed love bug had gotten her but good.

Borg needs to find out where his son is, not worry about Evie's decisions. And I think he may have just proved that he's not the one for Evie.

Mark stood in the small herd of horses, letting them smell and whuff on him until they had taken in his scent. A couple of attention hogs pushed close for rubbing and petting, not caring if he had mind issues and blackouts. Mark ran his hands over the animals feeling the sun warmed muscles rippling under their smooth hide. The horses stood still, hardly brushing away the flies buzzing around the group. The leader, a older mare that kept the kids in line, pushed her head into Mark's shoulder and moved him as she sought the majority of attention.
