Avalanche Thunders Into Tahoe’s Alpine Meadow Resort; Several Missing
January 17, 2020 at 11:36 am

TRUCKEE (CBS SF) — An avalanche slammed into the Alpine Meadows ski area Friday with emergency crews responding from across the Lake Tahoe area as several people have been reported missing.

The Placer County Sheriff’s Department tweeted at 11:20 a.m. that — “Placer County Sheriff’s deputies are currently responding to an avalanche that occurred at Alpine Meadows this morning. Search and Rescue is responding as well, as there are several unaccounted victims.”

Earlier Friday morning Squaw Alpine Mountain official tweeted they were conducting avalanche control operations in the area.

A fierce winter storm slammed into the Tahoe area on Thursday, dumping as much as 25 inches of snow on the Squaw Valley area and buffeted it with strong winds.

The National Weather Service issued a Winter Storm Warning and an Avalanche Watch for the Lake Tahoe area beginning at 7 a.m. Thursday.

“Periods of high avalanche danger may occur from Thursday morning through Friday morning,” the weather service warned. “Forecast heavy snow and high wind may result in widespread avalanche activity in the mountains.”

The storm also closed all schools in the Tahoe Truckee Unified School District on Thursday, as well as the schools in the Incline Village area of the Washoe County School District.A

Snow and high wind here in Sioux City, Iowa. No travel advised until mid-day Sunday.

Just above you a ways in Minnesota here.

Thankfully, I finished up my work week yesterday - got up this morning thinking that I would go to the bank a half mile away, until I looked out the window. Decided to walk rather than drive, because it looked like I might not make it, 4 wheel drive or not. Had a lucid moment before leaving on foot, and called the bank to see if they were even open, they were already gone.

Turns out a trip to the garage 40 feet from the house was the big trip for the day, on foot through 3 foot drifts. Supposed to snow off and on for the next 2 days, with gusts up to 48 mph. Nice to be preppers at times like this. We'll stay in, play games, play guitars, take naps, and watch the ice fishermen out on the lake trying to get to and from their huts. Don't need to go anywhere until Monday at the earliest, feeling grateful.

Snow and wind here in central Iowa, there's discussion going on of closing I35 from Des Moines to the Minnesota border to all traffic. It's going to get fugly tonight when those 40 mph wind gusts start kicking up.

It's looming closer for us. Supposed to get about a foot of snow and wind. Pretty much all the way through Saturday anyway from the looks of it.

I have one more trip outside for chores tonight and then put everything away and let 'er rip. Have had a pork roast going slow in the oven all day here, and doing up laundry and dishes. Could lose power, or just not be able to get out for a few days. Won't be a problem.

I'm in west central MN. We just got 6" of light fluffy snow Wednesday. With another 10-12" on the way today, the drifts should be interesting tomorrow.

However, we are reporting no fire ants, scorpions, poisonous snakes, or alligators.

the smiley is for the fire ants comment. lol

I'm seeing reports on my towns FB page that I80 through Des Moines, etc., is now closed and they're going to be closing I35 here shortly.

Or mosquitoes n gnats. We're in west central Minnesota too with blizzard conditions. Plow going down the streets trying to keep them cleared. Am in town, babysitting grandkids while daughter is working double shifts. Biggest mistake we made was taking out our wood stove couple years ago, it sure is going back in!

Moved off an acreage about two years ago. City people don't have any idea what even 1" of snow means to you. I do though.

I've been in town now for 25 years but still remember what it was like doing chores in this weather trying to get the water for the chickens, ducks, geese, and rabbits to not freeze over, and milking cows in this weather, yeah that sucked and big time!

Things take longer, but you get through it. I was laughing yesterday..was on the phone with a friend who was trying to track down a new weather station gizmo...she was panicking because she relies on it to know wind speed and direction... a big item when you have livestock...to judge how much help they'll need to keep warm/dry. Told her I rely on the flag in the front yard...when it's fluttering...all's well...when it's straight out, it's windy - mind the direction so they can get out of it, when it's GONE...time to bring in the herd. ;)

On TB every waking moment
Getting a little sneet here when we got home about 7:30 after an afternoon on the town. Mom wanted to swap out of town Christmas presents that didn't fit so we had to go to Belk in Wilkesboro. Got her stuff taken care of and went to Aldi's for a quick grocery safari. Then home by way of a local seafood joint (yep, mountain seafood :D) where we discovered our ex pastor's daughter has gone to work as a server, so it was old home week for a bit. Then home.

Snow called for tomorrow, low temps in the low double digits over the weekend thru Monday. Laid in comfort food from Aldi's so let it snow :D.

Waiting for our share here in MI. Should start late tonight. 5"-7" expected by noon Sat. Then freezing rain and rain on top of that Saturday evening.

The sleet reached us here in central Indiana about an hour ago. It's supposed to turn to snow sometime overnight and warm up enough to rain all day tomorrow. Then after the front passes through, it is going to be followed by a sharp drop in temperature, down into the teens on Sunday.

Let's Go Brandon!
SW lower MI is starting with snow, shifting to sleet, then to rain, then the whole thing goes back to freezing with lake effect late tomorrow. It's bananas out here and my basement is taking on water as it is. I'm very, very hopeful a power outage doesn't hit; I have backup generation but that only lasts so long.

I live north of Billings, Montana. The last 2 winters were very nasty with 2 foot deep snow that took forever to melt. Last winters low record was -37. This winter is very different. Most of the usual snowfall and below zero temperatures were in late October and November. December was quite mild. January started out mild with a high of 58 on Jan. 4th. Then there was some cooling and on the 15th the morning low was -12. It is now starting to warm again and next week should be fairly nice.

Montana weather is normally unpredictable and frequently weird but this winter is stranger than any of the 23 previous winters at my home.

I feel the exact same way. Michigan's winter this year has been bizarre, and nothing but. We had thunderstorms in January. A five-inch rain at one point. Snow for Halloween, and days when it was pushing 60 in December. NOTHING about this winter has been normal.

There Is So Much Snow In Idaho Right Now That It Almost Buried A Fuel Truck
Strange Sounds
January 15, 2020

The Idaho Transportation Department (ITD) came to the rescue of a fuel truck Wednesday morning, blocked by meters of fresh snow.

The crew cleared a path in the deep snow from Newdale to Tetonia and as you will see it in the following pictures, the walls were nearly as tall as the tanker. OMG!

Last spring, Idaho was hammered by the floods. And if the winter continues like that, spring flooding may become even more destructive in 2020. Yes, look at those amazing pictures of a fuel truck, needing to make a delivery in Teton Valley, and blocked by huge walls of snow on Highway 33 in Madison County.

For the broad picture, there are currently 4 eastern Idaho highways that will remain closed Wednesday morning because of blowing and drifting snow.

that's alot of snow
