WEATHER Current winter storm system - US

Neither here nor there.
My cousins in NFLD are posting photos of 25 foot deep snowdrifts and of houses completely buried under snow all you can see is the peak of the roof of the house.

Here in West Virginia we are getting a little of this action and not sure if the weather knows what it is doing, right now we have rain and ice mix coming down and later calling for snow. Have to wood stove going and it's cranking.

We woke up to an inch or so of snow on the ground and cars this morning. Started sleeting around 2pm and now it's pouring rain. DC area.

I give up.

Yeah, but you don't have to shovel it, and you won't fall on your butt and break something.

Absolutely preposterous day out here today. All the estimates were wrong by hours. It was supposed to snow until about six this morning, then shift to sleet until noon, then rain. The snow stopped at about two, and the sleet kicked in immediately thereafter. It sounded like someone was throwing gravel at the house. At about five or so, it shifted to rain, and rained off and on until about two. The snow is gone in spots, except for a few ankle-deep drifts.

This has been the WEIRDEST Michigan winter I've ever SEEN.

I'm glad. In years and snowstorms past, I've fallen so hard my head bounced a couple of times. Didn't break but had some lovely goose eggs on my noggin. Think of an elephant on ice skates :)

That's what I like about this area. You get 4 distinct seasons, rather than the "summer" and "summer will be back in a minute" climate I was raised in.

It has been in the mid 80's all week and is going to cool off in Central FL over the next several days, maybe even a hard freeze. I just moved my totes of tomato plant starts inside my garage with a LED shop light over them until I can put them back out.

I am flying in to Duluth tomorrow AM to visit family. I have never seen snow other than out of an airplane window so I guess this will be my chance, not that I am looking forward to it.

SW lower MI got 4" of very wet, heavy snow. Rain on top along with sleet. Took me 3 hrs to shovel the driveway. Definitely a widow maker. Never shoveled anything that heavy in my life. Hope I can move in the morning because we're supposed to get 4 more inches. Blah.

No complaining. If the rain we had last weekend was snow we'd have had about 30".

Nobody else can shovel due to back issues. God got me through it. I am very thankful.

I'm a bit lower than you are, and we didn't get that much. You must have got some lake assist up that way.

You lucked out. It looks the temps will be in the mid teens, maybe even above freezing later in the week, a January thaw. Welcome to MN and hope you have a good visit.

Here's Renee Zellweger arriving in MN. Run time :32. From New in Town, funny movie.

Back in New England - just finished splitting about a dozen logs to top off what's already indoors to keep the stove going. Then the snow started. Only 4-5 inches so not really a concern. Made a giant pot of chicken broth from some frozen carcasses I saved from prior meals. Now Plenty of wood and soup on hand so life is good.

I can hardly wait for it to hit the NY snowbelt. We don't even measure snow in inches. A common phrase here is " we only got a couple feet".

We lucked out again as it warmed up over night and it was supposed to drop down to 18F. All but a few traces of ice from last nights storm can be seen outside! That wild jet stream won out.

The wind came up significantly in the afternoon yesterday. Sorta cold this morning...6F but I think the drifting has backed off.

For sure got a mess to clean up again outside. Too dark yet to assess the damages. ;)

5 degrees here with a -11 windchill...I mean yeah...its cold...but we've had a mild winter here so far...going to be highs in the mid-thirties all week. This is NE Illinois.

TO give anyone tracking this storm we have been getting a light amount of snow fall for the last two hours and its a very light, so we are on the fringe of this storm front. North and west of my location it may be accumulating.

It was a great storm! We only got like 8” though

We had a good time snowshoeing after storm, but before the brutal winds came into play.

Not bad...thank goodness the wind more or less quit. Still 16 degrees, but sorta sun, and the Carhartts can handle this.
Probably only about a foot on the flat.

Haven't seen the plow-guy yet, but all's well outside with the beasties and no hurry.

Neither here nor there.
Stay safe out there people, a good friend's brother dropped dead of a massive heart attack shoveling snow yesterday morning.
