I wonder what qualifies a city for lock down. There must be some algorithm or magic number of positive cases that triggers the decision. Ding ding ding, oops YAGO! You Ain't Gettin' Out! I'm sure they're not spinning a wheel or pulling names out of a hat.

China coronavirus outbreak could be 10 times worse than Sars, expert says
  • Authorities in Wuhan took too long to impose travel ban so ‘golden time’ to contain spread of disease has passed, virologist Guan Yi says
  • Vital evidence that could have been used to identify source of infection also lost when seafood market in Wuhan was washed clean, he says

A leading Chinese virology expert has warned that the Wuhan coronavirus epidemic could be 10 times as bad as the Sars outbreak that killed almost 800 people around the world in 2002-03.

Guan Yi, director of the State Key Laboratory of Emerging Infectious Diseases at Hong Kong University, said in an interview with Caixin magazine on Thursday that after a brief visit to the central China city on Tuesday and Wednesday, he “chose to become a deserter” and left.

“My conservative estimate is that this epidemic could end up at least 10 times the scale of Sars [severe acute respiratory disease],” he said.

During the Sars outbreak, which was also caused by a coronavirus, 8,098 people fell ill around the world and 774 died, according to figures from the World Health Organisation(WHO).

In mainland China there were 5,327 cases and 348 deaths, and in Hong Kong, 1,755 cases and 298 deaths.

As of midnight Thursday, there had been 17 deaths and 583 confirmed cases of the new coronavirus – named 2019-nCoV by the WHO. Hubei province, of which Wuhan is the capital, has accounted for all of the fatalities and 444 cases of the 571 confirmed cases in mainland China.
The 12 other cases were reported in Thailand, South Korea, Japan, the United States, and the cities of Hong Kong and Macau.

One of the reasons for the prediction was that authorities in Wuhan had missed their best opportunity to contain the spread of the disease, Guan said.

Although a travel ban had been introduced in the city on Thursday morning, the “golden time” to contain the virus had passed, as most of the people travelling home for the Lunar New Year holiday had already left, he said.

“They might have been in contact with patients in the community and still in the incubation stage when they left Wuhan. They are probably virus carriers on the move.”

On Wednesday alone, 299,600 train passengers departed from Wuhan, one of China’s busiest transport hubs, according to figures from the local railway authority. Information on the number of people who had left the city by air, road or river was not immediately available.

Guan said he expected the outbreak to peak over the weekend, as the virus had an incubation period of about eight days.

He said also that vital evidence that could have been used to trace the source of the virus had been destroyed when the seafood market in Wuhan – the epicentre of the outbreak – was washed clean.
Meanwhile, Chinese health authorities said on Thursday that the outbreak in Wuhan had become a full-blown community epidemic.

The Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said in its latest report that more than half of the 198 infected people it had surveyed had never been to the seafood market in
Wuhan, nor had they had any contact with infected patients.

“Transmission within communities is believed to be taking place in Wuhan,” the report said. Its assessment “indicated that the epidemic is ongoing in Wuhan and that further spread is almost certain”.
Community outbreak is the stage in the spread of a disease when it expands from transmission within families and hospitals, to the wider community.

The epidemiological investigation found that 51 per cent of patients studied had neither visited Huanan Seafood Wholesale Market nor had contact with infected patients, the CDC said.
Only 22 per cent had had direct exposure to the market, and 32 per cent had had contact with other people showing fever or respiratory symptoms, it said.

The CDC said that another health care worker was suspected to be infected, in addition to the 15 already confirmed in Wuhan.
In a press conference on Wednesday, Li Bin, director of the National Health Commission, said community outbreaks had been found in only “certain areas of the city”.

Found this quote on Dr. Henry Niman's page. It was a quote from the Washington Post (I could not post the article due to pay-wall). The person speaking is a virologist who worked with SARS:

As the uncertainty continued, Guan, the virologist who identified SARS, offered a chilling perspective on the outbreak.

I’ve seen it all: bird flu, SARS, influenza A, swine fever and the rest. But the Wuhan pneumonia makes me feel extremely powerless,” he told Caixin. “Most of the past epidemics were controllable, but this time, I’m petrified.”

God I tell ya Housecarl, this is literally mindnumbing. SARS we had time to brace for impact, this blindsided us due to their stealth refusal to acknowledge the calamitous nature of the situation promptly. The 4chan community seem to think this was a bioweapon used against the Hong Kong protesters as guinea pigs ( medical experimentation in captivity? ) and got out of control.

Dr. Niman rebroadcast of hour 3 begins now. He mentioned that in testing of the postive confirmed cases that the viral load is focused on the lungs, not the upper respiratory tract.

Guan Yi: After hundreds of battles, I feel extremely weak this time (Update)
January 23, 2020 11:36 from Caixin.com
[Caixin.com] (Reporter Wang Duan Wen Simin in Hong Kong)

It is impossible to compare with the SARS epidemic. The SARS transmission chain is clear, but Wuhan pneumonia has spread.

Guan Yi just returned from Wuhan yesterday (January 22).

"Even I chose to be a deserter." Guan Yi is an expert in the field of virology and currently serves as the director of the State Key Laboratory of Emerging Infectious Diseases and the Director of the Influenza Research Center of the University of Hong Kong. Earlier in an interview with Caixin reporters, Accurate judgments have been made on Wuhan's human-to-human transmission and development curve. (See the report from SARS expert Guan Yi: Wuhan pneumonia development curve is highly similar to SARS )

"I'm segregating myself now." Guan Yi locked himself in the room. From January 21st to 22nd, he and his team came to Wuhan, hoping to help find animal sources and cooperation in epidemic prevention, but "there is no power, Sadness comes from the heart. "

During the SARS outbreak in 2003, Guan Yi and his team initiated the investigation and diagnosis of SARS pathogens in Guangdong, taking the lead in isolating and identifying SARS coronavirus and proving that market wildlife such as civet cats are the direct source of SARS. The government was advised to ban the wildlife market and curb The SARS outbreak and epidemic again. In addition, he has identified all major precursors and routes of transmission of the H5N1 influenza virus currently circulating in Southeast Asia, Europe, and Africa, and provided most of the pre-pandemic H5N1 vaccine strains proposed by WHO.

The epidemic in Wuhan is still spreading. As of 24:00 on January 22, the National Health Commission announced that 571 cases of pneumonia confirmed by new coronavirus infection have been reported in 25 provinces (autonomous regions and municipalities) nationwide, including 95 severe cases and 17 deaths. Among them, as of 8 pm on the 22nd, Hubei Province reported a total of 444 new cases of coronavirus infection, and 17 deaths came from Hubei. At two o'clock in the morning on January 23, Wuhan finally issued a notice of traffic closure.

Guan Yi had an optimistic estimation of the situation when he was interviewed by Ta Kung Pao on January 15, but now the judgement has turned down. He responded that because the notice issued by Wuhan Health and Health Commission from January 11 to 16 was maintained There were 41 cases of pneumonia and no new cases. "I was a little optimistic at the time. If there are no new cases in a few days, that is, more than 12 days, it means that we will win this tough battle."

Guan Yi pointed out in an interview with Caixin reporter on the morning of January 23 that the actual effect of the city closure is questionable, because many people have already flowed out to go home for the New Year. Conservatively, the scale of Wuhan pneumonia infection is much larger than SARS.

In addition, Zhu Huachen, deputy director of the Institute of Virology of the University of Hong Kong also agreed that the impact of the new coronavirus in Wuhan will far exceed the scale of SARS that year. She pointed out that according to the current case data, the symptoms caused by this virus are very different, ranging from mild to invisible symptoms to severe patients, while SARS in general are mostly severe patients, and symptoms will soon appear after infection. Therefore, compared with SARS, Wuhan pneumonia this time is more difficult to prevent and control. In the long run, a very toxic virus is difficult to survive for a long time, because people who are infected will soon be found, quarantined, or even died soon. It is not easy for the virus to find more infected objects.

As a new virus, the development trajectory is generally: the initial transmission is weak, and the symptoms of infected people are generally mild, but if the virus is not controlled during this golden time period, it may cause large-scale infection. Once the virus has survived and adapted to many people, it has the opportunity to mutate further, producing mutations that are more transmissive and more toxic. Zhu Huachen said that if Wuhan ’s new coronavirus has spread widely, it may not be removed as easily as SARS. Therefore, it is imperative to cut off the transmission channels of the virus as soon as possible.

Caixin Reporter: What have you observed in Wuhan recently?

Guan Yi: I arrived in Wuhan on the 21st and arrived at a local vegetable market called Xiaodongmen Market at 3 pm. The scene was peaceful and many people were still busy buying New Year's goods. I was extremely surprised. Because this time Wuhan pneumonia originated from the South China seafood market, the source of animal infections has not yet been found, and other vegetable markets appear to be unsatisfactory. The Xiaodongmen market is humid, the hygiene is very poor, and the ventilation equipment is poor. I observe that less than 10% of the people in the market wear masks.

After that, I met some local departments again. At night, I judged that the epidemic situation was out of control in Wuhan. Even people like me who have been “struggled in battle” have to be deserters, so I quickly settled on the 22nd. Out-of-city tickets.

At the airport the next day, I was surprised again that I dropped my chin. The airport's passenger flow has dropped significantly, and the airport actually has individual tours.

What's even more puzzling is that the ground of the airport is not disinfected, and only the thermometer is used to monitor the body temperature. I observed that in the Wuhan terminal, only sporadic places such as Starbucks put disinfectant.

When I passed the security check, the little security girl holding the luggage box was wearing only the simplest disposable mask. I said: Girl, the quality of your mask is not good, and you are in contact with so many passengers every day. She said that she was not allowed to wear it because she was worried about affecting the image, which was prepared by herself.

This shows that even though the central authorities have spoken highly in the past two days, the local health protection has not been upgraded at all. I thought at the time that this was going to be a "state of war." Why hadn't the alarm been raised? The people were so pitiful that they were still preparing for the New Year with peace of mind and had no sense of the epidemic.

Caixin Reporter: What progress have you made in finding animal sources in Wuhan?

Guan Yi: I ate a lot behind closed doors, and there were not many scientific research institutions willing to cooperate.

They are inertia in management and may consider themselves more capable.

But the key point I want to point out was that the South China Seafood Market was closed, the floor was washed, and the "crime scene" was gone. How can we solve the case without evidence? Tracing the source of an animal is a relatively complicated process. I cannot easily find an animal with a virus and blame it as the culprit. It requires scientific analysis such as scale and system.

Caixin Reporter: How to treat Wuhan ’s closure?

Guan Yi: Evaluating a measure depends on the time and effect. At the time, I feel that the golden prevention and control period has been missed, and I am not optimistic about the effect. According to my observations, the flow of people on the streets of Wuhan City has significantly decreased on the 21st, the Spring Festival tide is almost over, and many young people or hometowns have returned home for the Chinese New Year. They may have come into contact with patients in the community and left the city It is still in the incubation period, and it is likely to be mobile viruses. When these people returned to their hometowns, they took the virus to all parts of the country. Starting from their departure on the 17th and 18th, people on the 25th and 26th may need to pay more attention.

In addition, those who have left the city will not or do not understand how to isolate themselves. I don't think the local government has done anything, and even a quarantine guide has not been given to those who have left the city.

On January 20th, the National Health and Medical Commission has issued a document to include Wuhan pneumonia into the legal management of Class B infectious diseases, and adopted measures for the prevention and control of Class A infectious diseases. However, according to my observations and investigations, I still have Wuhan Undefended city.

Caixin Reporter: How to determine the trend of the next epidemic?

Guan Yi: The outbreak is certain. "Wuhan's nine provinces are all connected", coupled with missing the gold prevention and control period, and the tide of the Spring Festival, some people do nothing.

I have also counted hundreds of battles and experienced bird flu, SARS, H5N1, swine fever and so on. But for this pneumonia in Wuhan, I really feel extremely weak. There is simply no comparison with the SARS epidemic. At that time, SARS first developed in several cities in the Pearl River Delta, followed by Beijing and Hong Kong

60% -70% of the SARS infected people are from individual super communicators, and the transmission chain is very clear, as long as the contacts of those people are blocked. But this time, the source of transmission has been fully spread, and epidemiological investigations are no longer possible. And to control costs, you should use a geometric digital meter.

It is conservatively estimated that the scale of the infection may eventually take off 10 times that of SARS. I've experienced so much, I've never felt scared, most of them are controllable, but this time I'm scared.

Caixin Reporter:
As an individual, what can you do now, and how should you do it?

Guan Yi: If you have been to Wuhan, please isolate yourself. Take myself as an example. When I left Wuhan, I wore a mask all the way on the plane. As soon as I was off the plane, I used alcohol disinfectant to disinfect all my clothes, shoes, and luggage. I also asked everyone in the team to prepare supplies. The house was self-isolated for at least five days, and reported every morning and evening with or without symptoms. Other people who have not been to Wuhan try to go to public places as little as possible. Once they feel uncomfortable, seek medical treatment as soon as possible and avoid contact with others.

Caixin Reporter: Why is there a sudden increase in new cases? You have expressed optimistic judgment in an interview with Ta Kung Pao earlier.

Guan Yi: I have reported no new cases for a few days before. At that time, I was still a little optimistic. If there are no new cases in a few days, that is, more than 12 days, it means that we will win this tough battle. (In the circular issued by the Wuhan Municipal Health Commission from January 11 to 16, all 41 cases of pneumonia with new coronavirus infection were maintained, no new cases were added.)

But now there are a lot of new cases. I want to say that it's not more powerful than anyone else, it's really about being responsible to the country and the people.

As posted in this thread a bunch of pages ago, there was a conference called Event 201 Pandemic back in Oct 2019 where they drilled down a scenario of a pandemic and its effects and brainstormed what to do. They called it CAPS and this is a highlight reel from their conference. [THIS IS ALL FAKE. There is no pandemic called CAPS. ] The video has fake news reports from "GNN" and then the panel discusses what they just watched. They thought such a scenario could happen in 5-10 years. REALLY INTERESTING TO WATCH NOW.

As I said the factory work force in China moves about a lot. Meaning back and forth from home farms and small country towns. They mainly move on public transport so if infected they would be spreading the disease all over the place.

This city Wuham but has a population of 8,000,0000. Do you think you can contain something in such a population?

lived in Beijing during military lockdown. Here’s why I’ll never go back.

Nov 6, 2015

This past September, CNN described the conditions in Beijing during its military parade celebrating the 70th anniversary to the end of World War II: “While Chinese will enjoy a three-day public holiday as part of the celebrations to mark the 70th anniversary of the end of World War II, good luck to anyone wanting to tune out the pomp and pageantry…Those living within the lockdown area will be virtual prisoners: They aren’t allowed to leave their homes, invite guests, use balconies or even open windows.”

I ended up being in Beijing during that time this year and experiencing the strict country lockdown. The night before the event, when I went out to get food and water for the following day, I saw that the city had turned off all of the street lights and made shop owners not only close, but also dim their neon lights to encourage people to head home. There were uniformed patrols on every block. The message being sent was clear – go home, stay quiet, and watch the parade on TV.
I was close to but still outside of the zone near Tiananmen that had been placed under martial law; the state had decided that there was to be no room for dissent, error, or other disruptions. When riding the subway, the cars’ that usually played cartoons now played military propaganda and anti-terrorism spots on rotation in which the evil doers were all blonde with blue eyes. Residents living near Tiananmen had been warned to stay away from their windows as snipers had been given authority to shoot persons that looked suspicious.

The government had also recently stepped up incentives to Beijingers to report foreigners guilty of any infraction. This became extreme to the extent that my neighborhood started getting called the “Chaoyang Intelligence Agency.” Earlier in the month, a woman had been murdered with a samurai sword by a mentally unstable man. His reason: she “looked American.” The attack happened during the day in a Uniqlo store near my apartment that I shopped at frequently.
My visa status was legal, but there was some confusion regarding whether or not I had been properly registered at the local police department as a temporarily residing foreigner and I hadn’t been able to get it clarified. As anti-American sentiment continued to rise among Chinese netizens, I wondered if these types of incidents would become more frequent. Indeed, some long-term expats residing in China had been telling newbies on forums that perhaps we were taking our safety for granted.

A few weeks prior, I had answered the door to my shared apartment and was greeted by a man in a uniform yelling something about an American, this building and a phone call, and then shoved a piece of paper in my face and demanded I sign. I managed to convey in my five-year-old level Mandarin that I was sorry but I couldn’t understand most of what he was saying and wouldn’t sign something I couldn’t understand, but my Mandarin speaking roommate would be back in a few hours and we could talk then. He responded by becoming aggressive and trying to take a photo of me. I ducked behind the door, closed it, and double locked it. I hadn’t been able to identify if he was a Beijing police officer or a community rent-a-cop of sorts. I made a note to not open the door as much as I could.

The actual day of the parade was uneventful outside of the official activities, which included a large display of China’s next generation of military hardware. As described by Alan Taylor of the Atlantic, “The spectacle involved more than 12,000 troops, 500 pieces of military hardware, and 200 aircraft of various types, representing what military officials said were the Chinese military’s most cutting-edge technology.” The list of world leaders in attendance mostly included states seeking favor with regard to Chinese investment and those who wanted to make clear that they viewed China as a viable geopolitical counterweight to the US. Vladmir Putin, for example, looked quite comfortable. All entertainment and athletic programming had been suspended so all channels could broadcast was coverage of the military extravaganza from the state.
By the next day of the lockdown, I again heard knocks on the door. I froze up and waited for it to stop. If it was the Beijing police, they would gain entry anyway, and if it was my landlord, she would have already let herself in. I stayed there, not moving an inch for a good twenty seconds. The knocking stopped eventually and didn’t return.
I’ve lived, worked, traveled, or studied in 52 countries over the past ten years. With my travel experience, I went into China thinking that even though I don’t like pollution or dense crowds or unending cacophony, I would certainly make it out okay. I would at least eat well and be able to practice my Mandarin. After completing this trial period, I realized how I was wrong. Though life in Beijing is notoriously unpleasant, what I really couldn’t deal with was the element of state control that had become outright scary.
This incentive to flex muscle in foreign and military policy is usually lower when domestic tranquility is high. But from what I saw in China, things are not tranquil at home. Prevailing wisdom regarding the recent crash of the Shanghai stock exchange states that there are no clear signs that the government actually has a long term plan for stabilizing the economy but is merely responding to crises as they arise. Workers and human rights activists whose rights had been violated used to be able to rely on lawyers for justice; now those same lawyers have been flagged as activist trouble makers by the government. Young people have a crushing pressure to succeed. Even on the level of the family unit, the potential for tragic disenchantment is high. The measures taken that week made me fear how unstable the Chinese population really was.
For people who are thinking about traveling to China in the near future to find out for themselves, make sure your visas and registration are airtight, and consider the ramifications of living there as an American. I’ll be watching from a safe distance in Ulaanbataar, Mongolia, where I currently work and no longer have to deal with the Orwellian chill of Beijing.

Here’s what Canada is doing to stop the coronavirus from getting in

Health officials are monitoring multiple possible cases in Canada
With at a half-dozen possible cases of coronavirus being investigated in Canada, authorities are trying to screen people coming into the country for symptoms.
International airports in Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver have added messaging about the spreading virus to signs and kiosks, and travellers are asked to informed border agents if they have symptoms.
According to the Public Health Agency of Canada, symptoms can include a runny nose, headache, cough, sore throat and a fever in milder coronavirus cases, while serious cases can cause Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) and Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) , which can could lead to pneumonia, respiratory failure, kidney failure and death.
Although the World Health Organization did not declare a global health emergency due to the disease, more than 500 people have been infected in China after the outbreak started in the city of Wuhan.

More than a dozen people have died in China as of Thursday and Canadian authorities are monitoring five to six possible cases in the country. There are suspected cases in Ontario, Quebec and one in the Vancouver area. American authorities have confirmed one case of coronavirus in Washington State.

Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver airports have been identified as the most likely entry point for coronavirus. Additional health screening questions have been added to kiosks, informing travellers about coronavirus and asking them if they’ve been to Wuhan.
If a traveller shows signs of the virus, the Canadian Border Services Agency is the first point of contact under the Quarantine Act, and will conduct a preliminary screening. If the CBSA officer suspects an infection, they can contact a Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) quarantine officer
The quarantine officer will do a more detailed assessment about where the traveller has been, when they were there and what symptoms they may have, the agency said.
“If deemed necessary, the quarantine officer can then take the appropriate measures to address the potential public health risk,” PHAC said in a statement. Those measures included ordering the traveller to be transported to hospital to undergo a medical examination and to report to the local public health authority.

I'm sure everyone has surmised by now, this is NOT a normal flu outbreak. China seems to be the world center for disease generation again! I'm shocked at the medical teams, doctors and nurses, who through incompetence, poor training in HAZ MAT, CERT or what ever else they train in to become ill themselves and act as a new spreading vector? I'm surprised if these hospitals are not completely infected and shut down. Maybe they are and there not letting on?

From the spiritual side, remember this- THE HORSE CHARGES INTO BATTLE BUT SAFETY IS OF THE LORD.

To whit:Psalm 91:7which states-1000 shall fall at your side and 10,000 at your right hand, BUT IT SHALL NOT COME NEAR TO YOU. Claim it accept it and carry on if it really gets bad and you have to go out for work, shopping, etc. Do your part in preparing and I know God will do His. Stay well and pray this if you have to go out.

The scariest aspect of what I see here to date is the long incubation period. A single person can infect many people before they become sick themselves. The missing piece of the puzzle is just how contagious it is. Thus far the fatality rate seems low if the reported numbers are to be believed, but everything that comes out of China is suspect in that regard and so that's a question that we will not know the answer to until (and if) it takes hold in a western country.

China may be locking down their cities to slow the spread, but given their deeply held belief that their time has come to be the dominant world power, they will not let this thing take them down by themselves. They willspread the joy to to speak.

Just for perspective:
The 2017-18 flu season in the US alone, per CDC, resulted in an estimated 45 million illnesses. 810,000 hospitalizations and 61,000 recorded deaths. I can’t seem to find any records of a city in the US being quarantined. SOOO, I agree with a previous poster stating this is either the mother of all over-reactions or the apocalypse has arrived.

On Fox and friends first this morning which is a couple hours before Fox and Friends starts...my time around 3-5am. They reported the guy in Washington had died. Later in the show they said, no, we made a mistake and he hadn't died. Makes me wonder if what they reported the first time was the truth, and the last is the cover up.

I don't believe for a second that they'd say on air he died if they didn't have a good lead.

Infected people seen dead in streets' of quarantined China Coronavirus city Wuhan

EXCLUSIVE: Disturbing images on Instagram from inside Wuhan show residents dropping to the floor following a lockdown of the city by Chinese authorities

Disturbing images of Wuhan residents dropping unresponsive to the floor have emerged on Instagram following the diseased Chinese city's coronavirus lockdown.

Wuhan has been branded a “zombieland” by frantic locals after Chinese authorities told residents they are not allowed to leave yesterday morning.

Pictures from inside the city paint an apocalyptic picture as medics patrol in hazmat suits and gas masks.

In an upload direct from Wuhan, a man can be seen lying unresponsive on the floor as concerned individuals look on.

It appears as though the man was waiting in line for paperwork when he collapsed while wearing a disposable face mark for protection.

As the scene unfolds, a medic dressed in all white approaches the man and bends down to offer assistance.

The situation was witnessed by a line of six people but the incident does not seem isolated as other residents have posted images of the same scenario.
