This is my first post. Read the rules and I think I got it right. Mods, if something is wrong with the below please let me know or delete it. The news service was the only by-line I could see - no authors name. :)

My answer to the article is: "Its our country and we'll close the borders if we want to" (Sung to the tune of its my party) :)

Ebola-hit Sierra Leone hits out at Canada over visa block

Freetown (AFP) - Sierra Leone accused Canada on Saturday of discrimination over its decision to suspend visa applications for residents of Ebola-hit nations.

Immigration Canada announced on Friday it would not process applications from individuals who had been in an Ebola-affected nation within the previous three months.

"The government views the decision as discriminatory, coming at a time when we are trying to ease the isolation, and not re-enforce it," said Theo Nicol, Sierra Leone's deputy information minister.

Canada's immigration minister Chris Alexander had described the move as a precautionary measure building on actions "taken to protect the health and safety of Canadians here at home".

"Canada's action is not taken with the interests of west African states in mind. As a member of the Commonwealth of nations, Sierra Leone particularly feels we should share common understanding and goodwill," Nicol told AFP.

Canada is also blocking new or existing visa applications from foreign nationals intending to travel to an Ebola-affected nation.

Although Canada has had several alerts for possible Ebola cases, the country has yet to record its first confirmed incidence of the disease.

The World Health Organization said Friday that Ebola had infected a total of 13,567 people so far, claiming 4,951 lives, mostly in Liberia, Guinea and Sierra Leone.

I think that the government meant that they view the decision as "racist."

From what I've heard, most Canadians support this decision.

It should be noted that Canada has sent HCWs and aid to all the affected countries, as well as a promising vaccine. Nobody wants to see Africans or anyone else suffer, but the government's first responsibility is the health and safety of its citizens, and after the best attempts to effect that have been made, the next concern is and should be launching a humanitarian effort to help the stricken nations.

I'm pretty sure the visa restrictions won't insulate Canada completely, and it's likely that we'll see our fair share of Ebola cases here too. We haven't suspended flights to and from every nation, and with ski season upon us we'll be receiving travelers from around the globe.

If anything, I think the action the government has taken has served to mitigate the fear(s) of the Canadian people, and we all know how dangerous panic can be.

Canada is doing the right thing to protect its citizens in the US we have a traitor that will not block visas but is actively bringing it in.

I wonder if our newly minted "Ebola Czar" is strong arming the Canadians as we speak? How dare they step out of line?! Fortunately, I don't think there is anything our government has to hold over their heads.

If I lived there instead of here, I would sleep better at night, at least as to this issue and the possible repercussions.

We should have closed our borders a month ago.

I feel like obola fodder.

I worry about my DD who teaches at a public school. God bless her, she does her best to work with the English learners and it's a hard row to hoe. Thank goodness, there isn't too much turnover in the classroom with the local population.

Well, there's part of your problem. You don't beat ebola by "easing the isolation". This guy and the Special Snowflake must be best friends.

God bless Canada for their effort to protect their folks.
