Egg Jewelery Box

FireDance. I cut it with a Dremel hand saw. Dremel turnes about 35,000 rpm's. I have one now that does near 400,000 rpm's. It's like a dental tool that runs off of a air compresser. More rpm's = less vibration.

I have been an egger since 1963 or so.

Here is a egg cut with the higher rpm saw.

A OU egg for a friend's neice. The "O" & the "U" were cut out of another egg and beaded, bead by bead by bead. ;-)
It too opens and is a jewelery box.

Anniversary egg for friends 50th. It is a emu egg and carved using the highspeed saw.
Emu eggs have 3-4 layers. The first looks like an avacado. It is dark green. Second layer can be white. Not all eggs have this layer. Third layer is teal and the final layer is white. This doesn't count the membrane that in many cases needs to be removed by soaking the egg in bleach. The bleach does not harm the other colors, it just dissolves the membrane. If left in a heavily carved or cut egg it can shrink and cause the egg to break.

Did you know that appaloosa horses hatch from eggs? ;-)
Here is a emu egg that has been exposed to light over the years and has turned a brownish color on the first layer.
A friend raises appy's north of Dallas and I wanted to make her something different. The hair is from one of her
horses tails.

All of these eggs in this photo are large chicken eggs. Cord is glued onto them in whatever pattern I can think up and then painted flat black. When that is dried Rub N' Buff is rubbed over the high spots taking care to not cover the nooks and crannies. Almost everyone that I hand one to think it's going to be heavy. They look like solid puter but weigh nothing. Probably less than a half ounce each depending on how much cord is on them.

Here is one in progress. The virtical cords are solid but the horizontal pieces are put on one at a time. It is not woven. Hundreds of the little buggers. LOL

I started playing with eggs this year, too, but I am no where near your skill level. Those are amazing! Do you sell them at craft shows or gift shops? Etsy?

Thanks all! It's my thearpy. ;-)

If anyone is ever interested in getting started in egging I'd be more than glad to help point them in the right direction for supplies and or help on how to do anything with eggs that I know how to do. It's way easier than you might imagine.

Your imagination is your only limitation.

WisconsinGardener, Sorry I sent you a PM but forgot to answer you here.

No, I have never done a show but may someday. I have been "doing" eggs for over 45 years and only have about 20 that I have kept. Of the other's maybe 5% were sold the rest were gifts. Most people wouldn't pay the price. They can't comprehend that it takes days or weeks to make most of even the simplest jewelery boxes. The first egg has over 35 coats of paint on it. Even the ones that look like metel can take several days depending on how complicated the pattern.

If I were to do shows I'd have to assembly line them. I have never made two that were exactly alike and that is what I'd have to do pretty much.

Amazing talent you have, nancy98! Thanks for sharing. I used to make beautiful hand stamped cards until life fell apart about 5 yrs ago. I miss my "therapy," for it truly is therapy.

When I was in girl scout camp a million years ago we did a batik egg. Learning to blow the yolk out of the egg without blowing the hole out was the hardest part for most of us. LOL.

I'd love this information. I'm not sure I would have the patience but would love to give it a shot! Thanks so much

Fantastic! Thank you for sharing the pictures of your work, you are very talented and the eggs are just lovely!! I love the OU egg; my cousin is head coach of the women's BBall team there so I'd love to show the picture if that is ok with you? :) Again, thank you for the pictures, you have a great design talent, as well as skill in your work!

Kathy, I buy all but the chicken eggs already cleaned out. Actually you can use a small aquarium pump to clean eggs out with and only have to cut one hole, not two.

FireDance, I'll send you a p.m. The eggs that look like metal are crazy easy. Post #7 explains how to do those.
What state do you live in? I'll find out if there will be a egg show there soon. Dallas' show is in June. I have a ton of sources for supplies and instruction books if you are interested shoot me a p.m. with your email address.

There area ton of FaceBook pages with eggers that make me look like a rank amateur.

AlaskaSue, MtnGal, FireDanc and Kathy, thank you very much. That you do good work is always nice to hear.

:) More fantastic!! The eggs from 35 years back are very nice...love the swirly one on the right...looks like a cornucopia next to it...and a diorama scene on the far left. Simply lovely, I wonder how long something like that swirl one takes, I'd be so afraid I'd shatter it. You must have very steady hands!

Sue, thanks, good eye on the cornupicia. The egg is actually a turkey that had a misshaped end. The swirly one was pretty easy. While it can be cut with a high speed saw, 300,000+rpm's without reinforcement I cut that one with a Dremel at 35,000 rpm's. But I did glue the center gold braid on each spiral first. Then when I was done I put glue on the inside of each spiral and then sprinkled diamond dust on it. The outside has the center trim and then either more braid or pearls. You can actually compress it slightly between your fingers. If it's left hanging for a while it stretches out then if you put it on a stand it gets rounder. The diorama has wood carvings from Germany inside of it.

My favorite tree ornament is the white one with the Harley bar & shield on it. Upper left. Being a Harley rider for over 30 years........ :-)

Again, thanks everyone.

Those are amazing! You are an incredible artist, or should I sat EGGcredible? Thanks for sharing.

LOL Many egg artist try to think up a name with "egg" in it for their egg art. I finally gave up and just call it Sunshine Eggs. Is anyone here old enough to get what movie "sunshine" came from?
