I just received my Puritan's Pride catalogue and they're having super sales. The elderberry extract capsules are 3 bottles of 100 count pills for $10.99. I just ordered 6 bottles because I can't find it in any stores around here. Many of their things are 3 for 1. I don't know how long the sale lasts, but I ordered fast in case they run out. They said they'd be here in 3 to 5 working days. Not bad!

Dinghy, I just checked their site and that is NOT extract, just elderberry ( I assume ground or finely cut). Their online catalog does not even list an elderberry extract. Just so you know what you are getting, gal.

I don't know for sure what the difference is, but it's worked for us. As soon as we started feeling lousy we started taking it, and none of us has gotten sick for more than a day. It's 400 mg., which sounds like a good amount. Would it make that much of a difference do you think?

Dinghy, an extract is most usually a liquid i.e. tincture and dissolves capsules in a few minutes. If the stuff works for you, go for it. I was just clarifying the definition of extract for you and others. There is a process that produces an dry extract but unless the label states that it's probably not. Commercially prepared lozenges usually contain 140 mg per and recommended dosage when adults are ill is 2 lozenges 3 times a day - 780 mg so 400 at a whack isn't that much overall is taking 1 once a day. It certainly cannot hurt you, there are NO contraindications with elderberry what so ever that I can find.

Hi Goatlady, I figured that it would be about the same thing, only powdered. We take one, three times a day. I wish there was some way to know exactly what the difference is. It seems to work any way though.

That might be the elderberry leaves.

I bought some capsules and upon reading the fine print..found out that the elderberry I bought was made from the leaves. But it was from the elderberry plant. Don't they know though that it is the BERRIES from the plant that people want to take? I felt ripped off.

Someone here or elsewhere posted that elderberry leaves, stems, bark, etc was toxic! I can't find the article/post right now, but I have NEVER heard of using anything but the berries medicinally. The resultant toxicity can cause vomiting, nausea, diarrhea. And yes, they know what people want! It's hard to read the fine print on-line and most don't read it in person either. The almighty bottom line dollar usually takes precedence.

Guys- THIS place has the best deals I've found for a top quality elderberry extract:

http://www.honeygardens.com/elder.html

AND they have an "introductory special" if you buy 6 bottles right now.

I bought a case a couple of months ago, and tried some from one bottle just to see what it was like- no one has been sick around here, so I can't vouch for it's effectiveness. But it's a full bodied elderberry/honey syrup, and is very much like the one I make every summer.
