So all you're supposed to need to do this is a digital multimeter. I guess it works by measuring the resistance in the wire? Not something I would have thought of.

They actually make meters designed to do this. The last place I worked before retiring had one. I was responsible for checking the calibration. You tell it the wire gauge and type of conductor. It tells you the length within a certain percentage.

JUST WEIGH THE WIRE
DIVIDE THAT BY THE WEIGHT PER FOOT
AND YOU HAVE THE LENGTH OF THE WIRE
THE WEIGHT OF THE WIRE IS IN THE BACK OF THE NEC
