How often do you have to change the oil in these things? I assume you have to change it every time you use it with meat, right? What about non-meat items? Does the oil get funky and smelly quickly? Anything else I need to know?

(DH just got a raise so we're celebrating by buying one of these soon. )

If you cook fries in it then you can use it several times as long as the oil doesn't burn. If seafood then the taste will be conveyed to the next thing. Usually when I cook seafood the breading will start to burn after a couple frys. Also I throw out anything after a week or so (used) as it will go rancid. ;)

I rarely use my fry-baby for frying, but it works just great for blanching! When we can fruit or tomatoes, I just set it up w/H2O next to the sink, where I have my icy bath-just pop 'em from the fry-baby to the sink, and it's so easy and neat.
