Neither here nor there.
What all are you planning in terms of upping your garden security this year, from both two legged and four legged creatures?

I don't see this as a problem unless things get a lot worse than what we're seeing right now.
The biggest problem around here is deer and groundhog's and I can keep the deer out with the electric fence but groundhog's need to be gotten after with a firearm.

The best way to deal with groundhogs is to snare them. Because they have burrows and defined paths to them, they are one of the easiest animals to snare. You can skin and clean them for dog food (or people food if mest is getting scarce... woodchuck isn't bad meat; all vegetarian, and with more fat than most game meats)

I've moved a lot of it up close to the house. but we can't do that with everything . . . still have taters beans and sweet potatoes down near the creek. you can see that from the road - and its a qtr mile away from the house. if it gets to be a problem it will need to be addressed.

We use 220 Conibears. Put them right over the holes. Have to watch out of you have dogs though.

Yeah... that's the nice thing about snares... any leash trained dog will just stop when they feel it tightening and will sit there waiting for someone to come and release them. Of course, the neighbor's rat terrier have never had a collar on in their lives, and it probably wouldn't be pretty, but they fortunately don't hunt in our fields.

My uncle is the one who turned me on to using them. He uses them in his pasture and puts a fencing around them so the sheep don't find them. The chucks get through but his sheep and collies don't. I will also use a Havahart and then just shoot them if I am worried about other animals.

Lots of flowers as pollinators, some for garnish, some as distractors.
If people ask what I'm growing i tell them the truth- rutabagas, turnips, flowers, radishes, garlic. For some reason, they don't seem so interested....

We have an 8 foot fence against the deer, but our biggest security is that nothing can be seen from the road. The garden is down hill, and behind the house. We're going to put in another greenhouse, also hidden from the road. There are trees and other vegetation that help hide everything.

And yesterday I caught the stinking stinky groundhog, so today we start transplanting.

Did you butcher the groundhog and put him in the freezer?

No, I did not. My hatred for him was so deep and wide, it would have choked me.

Also, he was very thin and I guess plain old grass just won't put on the weight. We've been having freezes, but I couldn't put out cabbage or beets due to his demonic refusal to enter the havahart.

Elmer went to Fuddville. It was a good day!
