HEALTH Getting Old Hurts

FaithfulSkeptic

This winter of finishing my pole shed has really been taxing on the ol' joints and bones. I've always had stick arms, but this time around, my elbow tendons are sore and staying sore. So much so that they woke me up last night. Then earlier this evening I wasn't lifting anything particularly heavy, and somehow twisted my right hip socket ( getting off the ladder I think ). Hurts so damned bad I can barely sit. Straight walking is OK, but any twisting and lifting is no go. I'm sure it's the equivalent of a sprain and will heal, but ...

This sucks. Is this how it's going to be from here on out? Have to watch every little move you make? Being sore all the time?

I sympathize. Try to get your doc to give you a reasonable supply of Prednizone (a steroid) and Hydrocodone-based meds. Some muscle relaxers can help, too. These days, the docs are terrified to give patients anything opioid-based because of the Fed witch hunts. The fact is that opioids - used responsibly - present very little addiction risk and are a Godsend for pain patients. Especially for old(er) pharts like us.

Good luck to you!

Get your doc to give you some Flexoril; that will help with the muscle strain. Prednisone helps but makes me irritable and grumpy. Have to take both of these daily and yes, growing old sucks.

Yep, this is why there is always the thing about older people talking and comparing their aches and pains, you never know what you did to bring it on and you are amazed to have so many kindred spirits having the same pains. You want to know what they did to get rid of it. Usually, something worse and unexplained comes along to take your mind off of it HA

I have found that curcumin, msm and the Pauling therapy doses of VIt C really help the flexibility of my joints.
Your body needs Vit C to make collagen, the stretchy stuff in our body. The older we get the less Vit C we absorb so we need to take more, to stay “stretchy”
I have found there is a stark difference in bowel tolerance and efficiency/efficacy( I may be using words above my pay grade) of Lipo type Vit C over standard absorbic acid.

Glucosamine is a big help too.

Kinda why I post threads to whine about yard work. Misery loves company. Hope you feel better.

I agree with what has been said, I have good days and bad days. Sometimes my hip hurts so much I have to force myself to stand straight. Lidocane patches help, Blue ice is helfpful and I am blessed to have pain meds which I take sparingly.

Actually, I popped 4 ibuprofen about an 1-1/2 hours ago, and it's feeling way better; probably better than 80% mobility. So, either the IB is working or there was something pinched that let go, but I suspect it's the IB ( which for me is a wonder drug ). I guess I'll see in the morning.

Any sheetrocking involved? That's what I've been doing recently, tho tonight not so. Bought a cheap hoist to do the ceiling, but still wrecked my elbows moving it and lifting it to the hoist. Not much more of the walls to do, but enough that I know it's going to make me sore. Just gotta keep looking ahead knowing it's probably going to wrapped up by spring.

On my very best day I am about one tenth of what I used to be.
Yes getting old really sucks. I hate going to the shooting range where I have to walk 100 yards to place a target.
I barely have enough energy to wash my car.
I have to wait for a good day so I can drive properly, yes I can muddle along like everyone else but that is not the way I want to drive.

See, I have this Mustang GT and I love to drive it. I know its not the fastest thing around by a long shot but it is fun to do a proper pass. A proper pass, my definition, is to touch 90 by the rear wheels of a semi, and break 3 digits by the front axle of the tractor.
One of the few pleasures in life as I approach the cliff.

Makes some of the sleepless nights due to arthritis pain seem worth while.

Two Ibuprofen and an acetaminophen works. Seems as if the combination is more effective than the parts.
Tip from my dentist and it works.

Yes to msm and ibuprofen. Good quality CBD oil helps too. I have had to go to a physical therapist for balance and core strength issues... it seems I forgot how!

Try doing some stretching, before and after. Understand that you can't work the way you did in your 20s or even your 40s, so slow down and take breaks.

Also keep in mind that there are times when it's worth hiring a helper. If doing X means you'll be sitting in the recliner for the next 4 - 5 days in pain, look for alternatives.

Try a bottle of Summerthyme's pain oil. For me that stuff is amazing. A little roller top bottle helps with application...

Getting old is not for the faint of heart. Been remodeling my RV. Its an old one (25 yrs) but slowly coming along. Most of the painting is done. Sure leaves me tired and sore. I do take the MSM and some of the others. Son will have to help put the floor in I'm sure. Thank God it's only 26 feet long.

Probably will have someone do the mudding, sanding and painting.

That elderberry stuff is good too. You can use it a variety of ways.

Try a handful of elderberries (chew them well) and 4 fingers of vodka. It does wonders for pain.

Demo'd a huge and USELESS concrete block hearth surround for an electric fireplace (stupid idea, IMO - the fireplace that is) this winter. I also have the elbow pain, forearm and left wrist. But I think it's tendonitis (sledgehammer & cold chisel) NOT joint or muscle related. Been a couple weeks now and despite ibuprofen, tiger balm, & a compression sleeve...

I'm still having trouble grabbing a beer can or whiskey glass with that hand. LOL.

Isn’t prednisone dangerous to take too long?

Cathy, yes, it can be. It can also exacerbate certain conditions such as diabetes. Like virtually all medicines, you need to research its effects and how it may interact with your own medical conditions. If used correctly (and sanely) I find it to be a near-miracle drug for my aches and pains. YMMV

I use a lot of ibuprofen - some days are good, and I don’t need it, but those are becoming more and more rare. It’s discouraging to say the least. Oh, well, old age doesn’t last forever!

Pain is proof of life.
:)

Haha! I just had my shoulders x-rayed last week. Shot. Both. Bone on bone. If I do it right, by the time I croak, I'll have every joint in my body replaced with hardware. Gotta keep doin' what ya do though..otherwise, what's the point? It's only payback for a lifetime of hard work and hard play.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but the older you get the worse it will get.Old age is not for sissies.Be very careful with that ibuprofen,Aleve or other naproxen products. You could blow your kidneys with that stuff.

I tried taking naproxen a few years ago, on someone’s recommendation, because ibuprofen hurts my stomach after a week or two and I have to back off from it. Within three days on the naproxen I had pain in both kidneys. Won’t even have that stuff in the house.

Yea I know what you mean dealing with Shingles right now on my forehead and around my eye only thing my Dr. would do for pain was tell me to take 4 ibuprofen 3x a day thanks to the gov. crackdown on painkillers people who really need them can't get them regular people are made to suffer because of the addicts out there burning stabbing pain is not fun.
