Doing ginger again. We start it in these tubs with promix and hydroponic nutrient. We will move these to the walapini in a month when it gets too warm for seed starting. :)

Cool... i need to move a pot I overwintered in the basement up to the greenhouse and see if it survived. I'm just experimenting... i planted purchased roots last Spring, and gave up when after 60 days, there was no sign of growth. Weedes grew up around the pots due to our incessant rains ftom the beginning of July on, but wgen I was cleaning up in esrly September, I noticed tropical looking leaves... and discovered the ginger had finally grown!

Ginger takes forever. These were in the bin for 3 weeks behind the woodstove.

Few tips..
Also ginger needs HEAT.. <50 will stunt it. Ginger is an understory plant so it likes it hot but shady. Moist fertile soil is best... Not wet.

We put it in the walapini... it's a darn solar oven at high noon in July.

Have you tried tumeric? I got some to grow and kept it going for about two years before I lost it. It didn't recover from its winter hibernation the third year. I didn't get to harvest any because I kept trying to up the population of growing tubers, but it was fun and a pretty plant.

The gal here in Iowa that grows ginger and sells it at the farmers markets grows it in bins like stan has and then put dowel rods about a foot away on all sides of the individual bins, and put up black plastic around those dowels, the black plastic sheeting was the same height as the bins. Wish I had a photo. They need heat, shade, and air to grow well in our non-tropical climate. Btw once you grow ginger you can also grow turmeric it's in the same family as ginger and has the same growing requirements.

My DD tried growing some ginger in our vegetable garden last summer, but upon finding that the deer liked to "nibble" on the leaves-, gave up on them----Another thing to add to the list of what our deer will eat. She gave it up to a lost cause and forgot about it the rest of the season.

Just a few days ago, while preparing the garden for another growing season, she decided to see if there were any roots left over--not really expecting to find anything since we are in zone 5a--with really cold winters. She found about 3 or four healthy roots that had survived the winter! I did not expect that since they are hot -weather (tropical?) plants!

I have a returning stand of turmeric every year. A few months ago I dug some up to use and left what I didn't use in an empty pot on the back porch. It has shoots on it now and I am potting it up :) I think I am going to try the ginger as pictured above as well. I have two big plants in the garden but I need some to sell at the market.
