AUSTIN, Texas (KXAN) — This month, skygazers will be treated to a once-in-a-civilization sight: a green comet named C/2022 E3 (ZTF) approaching Earth.

The comet, which last passed through our solar system a little more than 50,000 years ago, will reach its perihelion (or its closest point to the sun) on Jan. 12, when it will be within 100 million miles of the sun, according to NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory.

On Feb. 2, the comet will only be about 26 million miles from Earth. This is the closest it has passed since the Upper Paleolithic era, an epoch of human history when Homo sapiens are believed to have left Africa and settled in Asia and Europe.

To put it into perspective, Neanderthals still walked the Earth the last time the comet passed over.

What will the E3 comet look like?

According to NASA, predicting the brightness of a comet is difficult. NASA said that if it continues to brighten, it should be visible with the naked eye. It’ll also be bright green.

NASA said that in the Northern Hemisphere, the comet will be visible in the mornings toward the northwest. In February, it will move below the horizon and become visible in the Southern Hemisphere.

Viewers may be able to see the comet with the naked eye, but binoculars or a telescope will be the best bet.

How was the E3 comet discovered?

Discovered by astronomers Bryce Bolin and Frank Masci at the Zwicky Transient Facility in March 2022, the E3 comet was first spotted near Jupiter. It was initially believed to be an asteroid, according to Space.com.

As it traveled closer to the sun, it grew brighter. Comets do this as the heat of the sun causes frozen dust and gas beneath the surface to be released. Sunlight reflects off of these gases, giving them the appearance of tails.

The comet was named for where it was discovered (ZTF) and the year it was discovered (2022). Since it was discovered in the first part of March, or the fifth “half-month” of the year, it was designated E, the fifth letter of the alphabet. Finally, it was third object discovered that half-month, hence “E3.”

What were humans doing the last time C/2022 E3 passed by?

It’s been 18,930,412 days since the comet last completed its orbit, according to data released by NASA’s JPL. At that time, Homo erectus, the predecessor to Homo sapiens, and Neanderthals were using stone tools.

Some settlements were believed to have existed in valleys. The first bladed weapons were invented, as well as the fish hook and rope.

THE HOPI PROPECY of the Blue & Red Star Kachina’s

The Blue star is followed by the other brother - the red star which is the Purifier. There's more at the link, but here's the gist.
“In the Final days we will look up in our heavens and we will witness the return of the two brothers who helped create this world in the birthing time. Poganghoya is the guardian of our North Pole and his Brother Palongawhoya is the guardian of the South pole. In the final days the Blue Star Katchina will come to be with his nephews and they will return the Earth to its natural rotation which is counter clock wise.

“This fact is evidenced in many petraglyphs that speak of the Zodiac, and within the Mayan and Egyptian pyramids. The rotation of the Earth has been manipulated by not so benevolent Star beings . The twins will be seen in our North Western skies. They will come and visit to see who still remembered the original teachings flying in their Patuwvotas, or flying shields. They will bring many of their star family with them in the final days.

“The return of the Blue Star Katchina who is also known as Nan ga sohu will be the alarm clock that tells us of the new day and new way of life, a new world that is coming. This is where the changes will begin. They will start as fires that burn within us, and we will burn up with desires and conflict if we do not remember the original teachings, and return to the peaceful way of life.

” Not far behind the twins will come the Purifier The Red Katchina, who will bring the Day of Purification. On this day the Earth, her creatures and all life as we know it will change forever. There will be messengers that will precede this coming of the Purifier. They will leave messages to those on Earth who remember the old ways.

” The messages will be found written in the living stone, through the sacred grains, and even the waters. ( Crop Circles have been found in ice) From the Purifier will issue forth a great Red Light. All things will change in their manner of being. Every living thing will be offered the opportunity to change from the largest to the smallest thing”

“Those who return to the ways given to us in the original teachings, and live a natural way of life will not be touched by the coming of the Purifier. They will survive and build the new world. Only in the ancient teachings will the ability to understand the messages be found.

I think it was about a week and a half ago, watched a video on YT, where a Hopi leader was saying the Red Star Kachina would be visible soon and by soon he was talking in a few months, I think the video was posted sometime around Thanksgiving.

He also made comments about the Sun, that it would be experiencing a major life changing event for all things on earth, soon, like sometime late Spring of this year. This got my attention with all of the talk about the Sun being in the midst of a micro nova that's going to peak sometime between now and 2030 with most pointing to 2025 as being the peak.

The green horse.
I think the green comets historically were bad omens. Plagues seemed to happen then if I remember the stories correctly. And the "pale" (word means green) horse brings-

And the name of him sitting on it was Death, and Hell followed with him. And authority was given to them over the fourth part of the earth, to kill with the sword and with hunger and with death and by the beasts of the earth.
will reach its perihelion (or its closest point to the sun) on Jan. 12

That was the first day in my dream... 12Jan... but 24 Jan would be more shocking. Oh, great. Buckle up.

by the beasts of the earth- this phrase had me stumped for years. I think I know what it is now and people would not believe me if I told them. Let me say this... 9mm won't do the job. Stock up on 12ga slugs.

Comet Not Seen Since The Stone Age Will Fly Through The Sky In ‘Once-In-A-Civilization’ Event

A comet not seen since the Stone Age will streak across the night sky this month in a “once-in-a-civilization” sight, providing observers are lucky enough to catch a glimpse.

Initially believed to be an asteroid, the comet was first detected by astronomers Frank Masci and Bryce Bolin at the Palomar Observatory in Southern California in March 2022, according to Space.com. Later observations however showed the “asteroid” had a “very tightly condensed coma” – an indicator of a comet – traveling approximately 399 million miles away from the sun, near the orbit of Jupiter, the outlet reported.

After further observation, astronomers were able to determine that the comet, dubbed C/2022 E3, had an orbit that lasted approximately 50,000 years, placing its previous journey through our solar system during the Old Stone Age, Space.com reported.

Once the comet passes near Earth, it may never be seen again. C/2022 E3 is on a parabolic orbit which means that once it travels around the sun it will likely continue into deep space and never return, according to the outlet.

Seeing the comet may prove to be difficult, as NASA scientists say comet brightness varies and is difficult to predict, KXAN News stated. If the comet continues to burn as brightly as it has been, it will appear as a bright green streak in the Northwest morning sky for those in the Northern Hemisphere, the outlet reported. For those in the Southern Hemisphere, the comet will be visible in February.

Comet Set To Graze By Earth For First Time In 50,000 Years - Might Be Seen With The Naked Eye

FRIDAY, JAN 13, 2023 - 03:20 PM
Authored by Michael Wing via The Epoch Times,

An icy visitor from the far reaches of the solar system is expected to shoot past Earth and the sun in the coming weeks and it might be visible with the unaided human eye. This visitor from afar is a comet believed to have brushed by Earth before - some 50,000 years ago.

Discovered in March 2022, the comet recently passed within Jupiter’s orbit and is heading for the inner solar system. Our witnessing the flyby soon to occur could be a once-in-a-lifetime astronomical occasion.

Bright Enough for Naked Eyesight?

Dubbed C/2022 E3 ZTF, the comet displays a greenish coma, the nebulous envelope surrounding a comet’s nucleus, and a yellow-tinged tail of dust and ion particles in its wake.

Initially showing a stellar magnitude of 17 when it was discovered, according to EarthSky, C/2022 E3 ZTF’s brightness will increase as it approaches the sun, as the frozen matter of a comet’s nucleus sublimates when exposed to solar radiation sometimes causing a spectacular green “glow.”

Just today the comet reached its perihelion, its closest distance from the sun, and currently shines with a magnitude of 7.4—The lower an object’s magnitude the greater its brightness. It’s magnitude is expected to increase to 5 or 6, the range visible to the naked eye, next month when it reaches its closest distance from Earth.

So with dark skies and minimal moonlight or streetlight, C/2022 E3 ZTF might be seen without binoculars or a telescope. However, comets are notoriously unpredictable; it could be even brighter.

Optimal Viewing Geometry

Typically, as comets near the sun, they are drowned out by sunlight and banished from sight but unlike other comets C/2022 E3 ZTF’s trajectory presents great geometry for viewing from Earth. Appearing slightly past midnight over the coming weeks, it will stay visible despite its proximity to the sun—This holds true for stargazers in the northern hemisphere at least.

Originally appearing in the north, the comet arced northwest to southwest and then seemed to loop as our vantage point on Earth changed while we orbited the sun. The comet then shot northward in early October, vanishing entirely from view for comet watchers in the southern hemisphere.

C/2022 E3 ZTF is currently careening toward the Northern Crown and by month’s end will have neared Polaris, all the while getting brighter and closer to Earth. It will become visible to viewers south of the equator again in early February when it pops above their northern horizon.

The comet will reach its closest distance from Earth on Feb. 2 and you can find it transiting in between the constellations Draco and Camelopardalis just south of Polaris. As it travels in a retrograde orbit (the opposite way as Earth’s orbit), it will be moving very quickly. Try spying it with your naked eye, otherwise use a pair of good binoculars.

How Close?

As for the size of this comet, its nucleus was measured to be about 1 kilometer across, according to AFP—relatively small compared to more famous comets such as NEOWISE, which appeared in 2020; more famously, Hale-Bopp appeared in 1997 exhibiting a diameter of 60 miles (37 kilometers). But what C/2022 E3 ZTF lacks in size, it compensates for in closeness.

Having just reached its perihelion today, the comet now lies roughly 103 million miles (1.11 AU/166 million kilometers) from the sun. When it “grazes” by Earth on Feb. 2, it will be 27 million miles (0.29 AU/42 million kilometers) away, before it swerves outbound toward the outer solar system again.

This is the first time said comet has entered our solar system since the Upper Paleolithic period 50,000 years ago. Scientists say it could be permanently ejected once it makes its departure from the solar system, AFP reported.

But before we bid farewell, it offers an encore.

A Date With Mars … And Adios

Particularly for first-time comet spotters, C/2022 E3 ZTF presents a great sighting opportunity on Feb. 10 when it will appear extremely close to Mars.

You can try taking a long-exposure photo for 20 to 30 seconds which might yield a fuzzy, tailed object beside the rust-red planet.

As for where C/2022 E3 ZTF is headed, we might ask where it came from. The comet is believed to originate from the Oort Cloud, a theoretical vast sphere that surrounds the solar system inhabited by mysterious icy objects.

As for the comet’s unwieldy name, here’s the story behind that. It was first discovered during a survey on March 2, 2022, by astronomers Bryce Bolin and Frank Masci using the Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF), located at Mt. Palomar in Southern California. Its name denotes the facility where it was discovered (ZTF), the year of its discovery (2022), and that it was the third (3) such object found in the year’s fifth half-month (A, B, C, D, E), hence C/2022 E3 ZTF.

This visitor from afar will vanish from view by late April 2023.

26 million miles away is not exactly "grazing the earth".

In the middle ages, I think there was a crop failure when there was a close pass by one. I read years ago that chemicals from the comets might have been to blame for that or plagues.

from: Green Comet | Science Mission Directorate

A frequently-asked question: Why do some comet atmospheres glow green?

Answer: The coma contains cyanogen (CN), a poisonous gas, and diatomic carbon (C2). Both of these substances glow green when illuminated by sunlight. This is called "resonant fluorescence."

Interesting, I had not heard about 5his, something to look into though.

Muslims are very superstitious. For them, a green comet will herald the arrival of the Mahdi. Be aware, and ready, for them to go crazy in their religious zeal. Remember, YOU are responsible for your safety, and that of your family.

Has anyone been able to see it? I tried with binoculars but I could not make out a tail on what I thought was the comet. I hope to try tonight when the conditions will be as good as they are going to get for us.

Trying to keep up
The iceball cometh.

As if things didn’t seem apocalyptic enough already, scientists reported that a “horned” comet three times bigger than Mount Everest exploded and is hurtling toward Earth.

The blast originated on Oct. 5 from 12P/Pons-Brooks a cryovolcanic — or cold volcano — comet that measures a colossal 18.6 miles in diameter, or the size of a small city, Live Science reported. For reference, Mount Everest, the highest mountain on Earth, is 29,029 feet high — or about 5.5 miles.

This marked the second time this interstellar ice cube erupted in the last four months, with the last celestial event occurring in July, the Science Times reported.

The British Astronomical Association, which is closely monitoring 12P, caught wise to this explosion after noticing that it appeared dozens of times brighter due to the light reflected by its coma — the cloud of gas surrounding its center.

“The two ‘horns’ may be caused by a peculiarly-shaped cryovolcanic vent with some sort of blockage causing material to be expelled with a weird flow pattern,” said Richard Miles of the British Astronomical Association.Eliot Herman
For the uninitiated, such eruptions occur when a large level of gas and ice amasses and combusts like a frozen Coke can, causing the comet’s frosty insides to burst out of large cracks that form in the nucleus crust.

In this instance, the arctic blast caused the coma to sprout “horns” like some sort of intergalactic Beelzebub, as seen in accompanying photos.

Scientists also compared the satanic shape to the Millennium Falcon spaceship from “Star Wars,” Space Weather Archive reported.

A diagram of the comet's location. 4
The city-size comet is expected to be visible from Earth in April 2024.SpaceReference.org
The cause of the horns is unclear, however, experts believe that it could be caused by the shape of 12P’s nucleus — à la an interstellar pasta strainer.

“The two ‘horns’ may be caused by a peculiarly-shaped cryovolcanic vent with some sort of blockage causing material to be expelled with a weird flow pattern,” said Richard Miles of the British Astronomical Association.

Despite 12P’s ominous trajectory and shape, there’s no need to brace for “Deep Impact” just yet. The celestial hailstone — which orbits around the sun every 71 years — won’t reach its closest point to Earth until 2024, whereupon it will become visible to the naked eye.

This comet will then be catapulted back into the solar system, and won’t make its cosmic comeback tour until the year 2095.

12P. 4
The comet’s distinctive Pac-Man-esque pattern on display.Comet Chasers/Richard Miles
This is 12P’s second explosion since July 20, when the interstellar snowball blew its stack for the first time in 69 years.

During this eruption, the horn-like emissions were 7,000 times wider than the comet itself.

The coma has since shrunk back to its regular size but could attract more interest next year if it continues to explode — which will likely be the case, per Space Weather Archive.

What do you think? Post a comment.
First discovered by Jean-Louis Pons on July 12, 1812, 12P is reportedly one of 20 known comets with active ice volcanoes, Miles claims.

Perhaps the most famous is 29P/Schwassmann-Wachmann, a volcanically active body that expelled approximately 1 million tons of cryomagma into space this past December, marking its largest eruption in 12 years.
