A woman who conspired to kill her abusive mother in a case that gripped the US has been released early from prison.

Gypsy Rose Blanchard, 32, pleaded guilty to the second-degree murder of Dee Dee Blanchard in Missouri in 2015.

She plotted with her boyfriend, Nicholas Godejohn, to kill her mother following years of abuse.

He stabbed Dee Dee Blanchard to death with a knife her daughter gave him and the pair fled the scene.

They were then arrested hundreds of miles away in Wisconsin where Godejohn lived. He is serving a life sentence without parole.

The case sparked intense media interest and spawned a number of documentary series and TV shows.

Gypsy Rose Blanchard walked out of Chillicothe Correctional Center in Missouri at 03:30 local time (09:30 GMT) on Thursday having served seven years of a 10-year sentence.

While in prison, she gave a number of interviews detailing her mother's abusive behaviour and a memoir she wrote while behind bars is due to be published in January.

In a recent interview with People Magazine she said: "Nobody will ever hear me say I'm glad she's dead or I'm proud of what I did. I regret it every single day."

Dee Dee Blanchard allegedly abused her daughter for years by convincing her that she was disabled and required medical support.

She told people that Blanchard had multiple conditions including epilepsy, vision impairments and muscular dystrophy.

She received support from charities and sought treatment from dozens of doctors, often portraying her daughter as younger than she actually was and subjecting her to unneeded medical treatments.

Blanchard used a wheelchair, feeding tube and an oxygen tank even though she could walk and had no health issues.


She later said her mother kept her weak and isolated. Blanchard soon became more interested in the outside world, making a dating profile and meeting Godejohn.

"I wanted to be free of her hold on me," she said during Godejohn's trial. "I talked him into it."

She reached a plea deal with prosecutors due to the abuse she had suffered, which meant a 10-year sentence in exchange for pleading guilty.

"Things are not always as they appear," Sheriff Jim Arnott said in 2015 as he described the case. "This is a tragic event surrounded by mystery and public deception."

This was a nasty story, and case all around.

I am really on the fence on things.

If she said she felt freer in prison than she did at home with her mother, than she was never truely punished. And if she was not truely punished the question arises, was it really a crime that she was convicted of if she was trying to escape an abuser.

The whole ordeal show cases that we need to have a new classification for these sort of abusive controlling relationships where if the person can not escape, There has to be some sort of out. This would also apply to immigrants trapped in usurous loans with cartels, sex workers, and others.

I am more curious over how good her life skills are due to her extreme confinement.

There is a lot of talk on getting that verdict revisited and adjudicated. But this might be a case that emboldens autistic kiddos to wantonly kill so there is that. I still have to wonder if Autism is not a something made up and misdiagnosed as modern medicine does not want to reclassifying things for what they are either being neurological damage from environmental factors, or developmental issues from bad schooling, both issues that can not be easily addressed and throws the entire medical community on its head.

That is what many of us believe is the environmental trigger. The frequency and quantity of vaccines is much more than any prior generation. No vaccine safety data has been collected for over 3 decades, despite the law that gives them protection requiring it.

Joker, bad parenting - neglectful or emotionally abusive - can also cause developmental issues in children that mimic "being on the spectrum". Then, layer on the current societal indoctrination into "gender confusion" and sexualizing children at a very young age... and there is an epidemic of young people walking around with mental issues that aren't JUST a genetic predisposition (that could've been coped with, given a nurturing environment) that aren't functioning well in society.

Yeah, evil mothers are really good at that psychological mind prison thing. Roy Masters explained it very well. It starts when the children are children and with no intervention it continues for LIFE!

It's a form of mental programming/control. And not just with parents. It took me a while of fighting for my son before some of the other childhood programming, from schools, broke. School system definitely wasn't happy when that happened.

I must attest to this...my Son was a sweet compliant toddler until he got his vaccinations.

His personality changed A LOT and NOT for the good.

Same thing happened to my Brother. I remember him being in his bouncer and just screaming and crying with his face all red for no reason. Mom checked him and seeing there was nothing she could do to calm him, just walked off and let him be. He cried for a VERY long time.

Interestingly, both had/have Bipolar issues. They are the only ones in the family with such issues.

She was tortured by mommy dearest from birth, no doubt.

I also blame childhood vaccinations for my son's problems.....

I knew four in my early youth (in a limited population) and the only vaccination was small pox.

Something causes it very early. They actually come across as being born with it.

As one of the parents on this forum who have dealt with raising autistic children, I find your comments highly offensive.

I have dealt with both ends of things personally myself. There are those that truely have the disorder. There are many others that are misdiagnosed just so schools can push pills down kids throats to avoid a more expensive appropriate solution. And there is an entire medical industry that profits by treating such things instead of actually curing them rather profiting at treatment and misdiagnosis than actually curing the casuse. Plus there is the core issue that most of our schools are woefully unequipped and trained to properly address and care for children with special needs, and the lable is mis applied causing more issues. And there are our law enforcement agencies that are woefully undertrained and under staffed to handle things appropriately when a melt down and blow up occurs.

Plus the historical abuse and misrepresentation that physchiatry has where it was almost banned after world war 2 due to mis use and abuse by fascist and socialist governments. Then followed by misapplication to miscreant trouble makers by many communist countries in decades that followed. I still have to ask is the system itself self corrupting things through mislabling, misapplication, and improper diagnosis of individuals to create a whole classification, just because it can?

Does the world need to have the discussion again, should the discipline be banned? Current Psychiatry is responsible for whole groups taking pills that cause entire cascades of issues, and, with insufficient support networks as they stand unable to adequately treat those with diagnoses, should different approaches be mandated and required?

And bear in mind ADHD drugs nearly killed me 2 times as a child due to a mother who was over dosing me to keep me doscile. Only to find out later in life the issues did not really exist, it was a mother who was a narcotics addict that did not want to deal with her children and wasted no time hanging her children out as procreation trophies over the ex's head. An issue which ultimately caused her to die from COVID due to the multiple health issues acquired from her addiction.

So if that offends, you, sorry, but our view points differ. But I do feel your pain.
