This is a teaser, taking up where Premonitions ends.

Clora and Mark sat in the 'Family room' of the funeral home, the heavy black curtain shielding them from the many curious glances turned their way. Clora sat quietly, holding Mark's hand as he sat carved in stone.

The aftermath of the shootout was anticlimactic and dreary.

Borg had evidently expected the outcome that did happen. His home was clean, organized and a letter to Mark/and or survivors prominently displayed on his clean desk.

The door to the long, low ranch type rambler in one of the more prestigious neighborhoods, yielded to Mark's key as he let himself and the Deputy Sheriff's in for a inspection and organized search.

Clora went out of concern for Mark and a growing curiosity about his background, Mark had shared very little and Clora at last understood why.

Walking around inside the tastefully, expensively decorated show place, Clora felt like a little girl orphan come to live at at her rich Uncle's mansion. There wasn't anything she looked at that didn't scream it's understated value.

Borg had been wealthy, far more rich than Clora had ever imagined in the wildest flight of fancy. She sat at the bistro table in the kitchen, and stared at the copper pans hanging from the pot rack over the Wolff stove. The kitchen was a cook's dream.

The more Clora looked around the house, the more uneasy she felt. Mark was definitely used to the finest in life and living on the farm was pretty far down the line from this smooth opulence.

After looking at his boyhood room, Clora was more convinced than ever the farm was a slum compared to the electronic wonderland and in room amenities in his bedroom suite. Anything and everything was available at his fingertips and if by the remotest thought there was something he needed, there was an intercom to the servants quarters.

Borg thoughtfully listed his safe's combination, so the wall and Monet painting in front of the concealed safe wasn't destroyed. The safe was empty and the letter contained information Mark didn't want to know. He read some and threw the pages on the desk and then reconsidered, and paper in hand he sat down with a pen to study the garbeled nonsense Borg had written.

The house was huge and silent when the law left. Mark hit the button to close the drapes and prevent the stream of reporters and curious neighbors from staring in at them.

Clora wandered the interior, getting lost twice as she went down hallways and passed doors that looped in huge circles. She walked silently back to the kitchen and sat looking at the four door refrigerator, wondering if there was a glass she might use for a drink of water.

Mark came in and asked Clora to come with him, he had decoded the message Borg had left in his innocuous message.

Pac thanks for the tease --- Clora will really understand that sometimes all the gear and goodies is really the slum and ghetto. Family is what counts.

May you have a wonderful Christmas and New year which will in part be a pay back for the unimaginably wonderful gifts you have given us by sharing your great gift of story telling.

Blessing of the season to you and Mr. Pac. I am so glad you are together.

"Clora, come in and sit down. I...I need to tell you a few thing I have found out from Borg's letter." Mark ran his hand through his hair and looked disturbed, as Clora followed him into Borg's study.

"First of all, you need to know that we are distantly related, 4th or 5th cousins or some such nonsense. I want you to tell me if you have any reservations or concerns about us being married and somewhat related. Now it doesn't bother me, but you are a lot more religious and involved with family than I ever have been. That, plus the fact we are expecting." Mark held his breath, for Clora was looking at him seriously and not smiling as she usually did to reassure him.

"What kind of proof or paperwork, frankly Mark," Clora sat looking far more composed and relaxed than she really was. "I'm not sure I would take Borg's word on anything." there it was said and the words hung heavy in the air. "I can tell you one thing. I do not want to spend the night here, there is something wrong with this place." Clora said forcefully. "It gives me the shivers."

Clora seldom issued edicts, but Mark caught the unease and dread as she explained her position.

"Absolutely love, it's not that far back to the farm, but..I do have to return tomorrow and would like you to come with me."

"Mark, talk to me about growing up in that house." Clora asked quietly during the drive home, the slushy, boggy streets turning to rutted tracks as they headed for the farm.

"Well, for one thing you're right about that place." Mark spoke as he maneuvered the the landscaping pickup out of the seven car garage.
"It was always a house, never a home. We had a housekeeper that did nothing but run around after me and straighten up the house as I walked through." Mark sighed deeply.

"I was a horrible child, I deliberately caused the good people that worked for Borg untold amounts of work and trouble. Why they didn't ship me off to school, I'll never know. Did you see my room?"

At Clora's nod, he continued. "It was strictly for show. No one was allowed to touch any thing in the room, especially me. I made a vinegar and baking soda volcano for a science project and it got out of hand..just a little bit!" Mark laughed in fond remembrance.

"Mark,..are you happy with us at the farm?" Clora hated to turn the conversation, but a lot of 'next steps' depended on his answer.

"Yes, yes I am." Mark spoke forcefully. "It is a place of refuge where my loved ones live with me, and I finally have the home, and love that I have craved for so long. What I am Clora; you have given me the courage to be the very best person I could be. I'm finding it is a huge responsibility you expect of me and I am terrified I will fall short. I've not got any decent examples to follow." Mark pulled the pickup off to the side of the road, and turned to look at his wife.

"I don't want to be anyplace else with any one else," Mark repeated strongly "Are you having second thoughts?"

"No," Clora said honestly. "I knew the moment I laid eyes on you that it would never be anyone else."

"Well, far be it for me to upset logic such as that," Mark reached over to tenderly touch Clora's cheek. "Sweetheart, hang on, we have a car following us," Mark abruptly yanked the pickup in gear and executed a tire squealing, gravel throwing U turn and accelerated rapidly toward the dark sedan that was creeping slowly along the shoulder.

"Get down," Mark issued orders in his very best Sargent's voice, as he reached inside his jacket for his trusty Glock. The other car spun gravel as it shot backward trying to avoid the rapidly gaining F250. There was a crack and star in the pickup windshield, scattering crumbly glass nodules inside, as a hand appeared out the car window to fire rapidly at Mark and Clora.

"I was hoping all our loose ends were tied up, obviously not;" Mark was muttering as he rammed the black Mercedes in the right front fender. When the arm appeared out the back window holding the gun, Mark let the bigger pickup slide along the side of the sedan and he heard the screaming as the man's arm was caught between the two vehicles.

Gunning the pickup toward town, Mark went full bore for the Sheriff's office. Once in the parking lot lined with law enforcement cars, he honked and honked until several officers came running outside with guns drawn. Will was in the process of going off duty, but commandeered a car and went accelerating down the road with Mark thrown hastily in the back seat. Two more cars followed at a high rate of speed.

That left Clora covered in glass and trying to contain her racing heart as she sat down inside the office on the hardest bench she had ever found.

"Excuse me," she implored a passing official, "I urgently need to use the restroom, which way should I go?" as she stood up and moved into the room, the window in the front of the office shattered as a series of shots riddled the wall behind her.

That got Clora hustled to the floor with a deputy shielding her. The sound of squealing tires and a solid thump as the shooter's connected with a squad car and then went tearing off into the night.

The excitement, adrenalin and solid bulk of a beefy arm bouncing off her stomach caused a very personal embarrassment happening to Clora. It was involuntary and she fought to contain the urge, and lost.

"I'm sorry Miss, what were you asking, and are you alright?" The portly deputy struggled to get up off the floor. "Come over here away from any windows please."

Clora tried to edge her way around the man without turning her back to him, and was almost roughly grabbed and jerked into the safety
of the interior block wall. The room swarmed with uniforms and shouted orders. A sympathetic deputy brought a blanket that Clora gratefully swirled around her shoulders to hide the incriminating evidence staining the back of her skirt.

The tension made her feel sick to her stomach and Clora was pretty certain if she got back to the farm in one piece, she wasn't gonna leave willingly, ever again. Praying under her breath, Clora stood shivering as the organized chaos happened around her. The three cars that had zoomed from the parking lot, came careening back in as Will and his passenger came pounding down the hall from the back secure entrance.

Strong arms surrounded Clora and it was then she got all teary and emotional as the level of fright subsided some. Burying her face in Mark's shoulder, Clora stood trembling despite the heat of the blanket. Mark started to remove the army issue wool and Clora cried out, preventing him from easing the stifling heat.

"I can't take it off," Clora explained with an embarrassed hiccup. "I have an extenuating circumstance."

"OK," Mark soothed, as he valiantly fought from laughing out loud. Clora had a way of creating her own chaos simply by being herself.

There is a doctrine in law enforcement that states every crime scene has a 'leave something-take something theory.

The shooters had left a Chinese bullet casing.

"Would you please come into my office?" The Captain invited with a 'no use denying' gesture. Archer Martin felt a rush of acid indigestion as he looked at the couple he had come to dread dealing with. "What's happening this time" he barked in frustration. He didn't have all the paperwork finished from the farm shootout, and now there was another incident.

Mark patiently explained once again, going over and over in detail with the Captain what they had been doing and that no...they did not know who was firing at them and why.

A Deputy knocked and was ushered in. In his hand was a spent casing and a note resting under it. that read 7.62.

"What is this," Archer roared, slamming the casing to the desk top. "Are you positive?" As the young Corporal nodded and squeaked out a nervous "Yes Sir," Captain Martin got up to pace the limited space in his office.

"Get Pendleton in here!" Martin growled at the new recruit, and the junior officer snapped a salute and fled.

Will knocked and entered standing respectfully at attention, until the captain turned around and speared him with a dark glare.

"Is this accurate?" he pointed to the burnished casing.

"Yes Sir, a Chinese Mauser."

"Humm, why?"

"Unknown Sir." Will never took his eyes off the captain, but was keeping track of the Linderman's in his peripheral vision. Mark and Clora sat comfortably holding hands and sitting close, paying close attention to the words spitting back and forth.

"OK," the Captain said wearily. "Could you people stay out of trouble long enough for me to catch up the paper work. Where are you headed now?"

"Home!" Mark and Clora said together.

"Get them there, keep them there and don't let them out of your sight," Martin ordered Will roughly. "This has the possibility to be a diplomatic nightmare, so keep a low profile and stay safe. Now get out, I have work to do." Archer Martin rummaged in his desk drawer for a handful of antacids to wash down with cold coffee.

Will opened the door and beckoned Mark and Clora to follow him, closing the office door on the fuming Captain. Raising his eyebrows in silent but comical parody, Will pointed to the front door and the three of them left the station.

The night was cool on their faces, and Will followed the estate pickup like he was being towed.

The gates were closed at the driveway, the new addition to the farm security finally in place. Will opened the right hand side and motioned Mark through. He carefully closed the heavy wrought iron welded bars and smiled in gratitude.

Wayne came from the shadows, investigating the unfamiliar vehicle and curtains twitched at the windows as the family looked to see who had come into the yard.

Milo burst out of Lainey's grip, speeding towards his Mark and Clora. He caught Clora around the waist in a bear hug and almost tipped her over. "Ewww, you smell," he said in childish honesty. "What did you do, it smells like you wet.."

"That's enough Milo," Mark said sternly. "You don't know what happened, we need to treat Auntie Clora gently."

Clora reached down and grabbed Milo's hand. "I need a cookie," she said. "How about you?"

That invitation suited Milo to a T, so they walked into the dark house to find the oil lamp in the kitchen. The house was damp and cold, the fire long ago gone out. Shivering as she set a fire, Clora removed a stove eye and set the tea kettle directly over the strengthening flame. Milo used a chair to climb on to reach the cookie plate in the cupboard. In the firelight she lit the lamp and the cheery yellow light chased the shadows back. Drawing up chairs to sit close to the warming stove, they munched on cookies while Milo gave a long drawn out rendition of every minute of his day.

Mark strode to the barn with Ben, Wayne and Ev in tow. Will drove his car to the door and there was a hasty conference inside the animal warmed structure. "It's not over, we were bushwhacked tonight by yahoo's that were shooting Chinese bullets at us." Mark ran his hand through his hair. "They even had the nerve to circle back around and shoot at the Sheriff's office. Nasty business," he concluded.

Will stepped up and said "The worst part, that car had diplomatic plates on it, so realistically...their untouchable, no matter what they do."

What he said! Because the law can't touch them, you can use the time you would have spent dialing 911 to do more productive things.

Well, for the sake of the story...several 'bad' guys have to be untouchable for a while, and above local law enforcement control.

It is my personal belief that each individual has to be responsible to the moral and civil laws that govern us. It makes no difference what your color, nationality, mental status or abilities may be. You are responsible for your own actions.

I am outraged at the law breakers that go scott free because they might have had a hangnail sometime during their youth that impacted them for life. I try not to let my editorilization show through, but I am an old lady that has seen a lot of water under the bridge and I have definite opinions. There have to be consequences for bad behavior, or we will not be able to advance society for the good of us all.

Ahem,......I'm off the soapbox for now.

Lady, you do a great job. I just wish you lived closer! There should be more people like you.

I know a man that got off with Murder because he had an IQ of 54 (i think) and they let him go because he was stupid!! He is still in the community.
