…… I Swear I Can't BUY A Break

money? whats that?
:sht: I recently spent almost $600 getting work done to the rearend of my SUV. Today the exact same problem showed up again. I back up and there is no problem. When I shift into drive, at first the car doesn't want to move. Then there is a thump and off I go. It only happens when the vehicle is cold. After it warms up, there is no problem. I don't know if it is the tranny or the banjo. But something is certainly wrong. :sht:

Depending on how "recently" you had it done, there SHOULD be a warranty on the work. Even an implied warranty. Go back to the place who did it first (might want to carry a small digital recorder if that's legal in your state- look it up FIRST!) and see what they'll do. If no joy, or if they start spouting excuses to the point where you no longer trust them to get it right, get a second opinion at a reputable service place or dealer.

Then maybe you'll have grounds for a small claims court suit. Or not... depending on what's found.

We took our pickup to a local guy to be inspected, and when it failed ("emissions" stuff) we replaced several sensors, etc. Then we realized that it had a gas leak- a rapidly worsening gas leak. We took it back to him, and he replaced a different sensor, saying there was "no gas leak". Hell, you could SMELL it from 10 feet away... and it was actually to the point of a small puddle showing up overnight under the gas lines.

We fired him (and have since warned a bunch of people about his utter incompetence- oh, and he never did get paid for the inspection! LOL!) and went to another local guy. This one "fixed" the leaking gas lines, but when we brought it home, it was literally almost running out of the same general area! Took it back down to him, he apologized, ripped the whole thing apart again and did it right- for NO additional cost.

That's how it should be done. No one is perfect all of the time, but if they do the job wrong the first time, it should be done right for nothing (unless additional parts are needed NOT due to them wrecking something)

Transmission .... you have an auto transmission.

Rear end and transfer case all pieces parts are in direct contact like the gears in a watch .... you are experiencing transmission slippage.

Take it elsewheres, a reputable transmission shop .... this day and age almost an oxy moron. Have it repaired. Ask for your money back from the first shop... contact the BBB and sue the first repair shop for your funds.

Not so sure it's the tranny. The drivers side rear wheel kind of locks up but the passengers side rolls just fine. Once the drivers side breaks loose and warms up there is no problem. I'm thinking the axle or the banjo. BTW, the work that was done was replaceing the axle seals on the rear axle. The drivers side was leaking into the brakes.

Mehbe ... les start from the very beginning. $600.00 for axle seals seems a bit .. excessive. And mehbe you got a brake that ain't releasin .... yeah from the beginning.

Unless you have true "all wheel drive", that's normal. Ever watch anything but an AWD car on ice? If it's "Two wheel drive", ONE wheel spins! The other isn't a drive wheel.

Possible it's a brake... but it sounds more like tranny to me. (I don't fix 'em, but I've been known to diagnose problems before hubby even notices them. Part of having ridden horses for 40+ years and simply being "in tune" with whatever is underneath me, I suspect.)

God is good. The problem was left over axle fluid in the brake drums. It pi**es me off that I have to pay another $55 to get the thing fixed, RIGHT THIS TIME, but I am very grateful that it wasn't something more serious.

90 weight gear oil in your brakes will gum up and get very sticky.

the brake shoes/pads will stick to the drum/rotor and will drag very badly.

all brake parts MUST be clean and dry brake dust from wear is OK.

the dip sticks that replaced the axle seal should have told you that your brakes on that axle should be replaced due to oil getting on them.

You can clean then off, using blakeclean, and doing a good sanding of the brake pad/shoe. and the drum. Unless they were worn down there would be no need to just replace them. Brakeclean does a very good job at cleaning grease, fluid etc off the stopping material, and should always be used before re assembly as standard practice in any brake job.
