If you do side jobs for $, better check state laws...

OddOne

< Yes, I do look like that.
Many, and I do mean MANY, folks occasionally take on side jobs doing auto repair work for money. Some do it so often it's just about their primary occupation even though they already have an official "job."

But, if you accept $ in exchange for services rendered for car repair, you might want to check your state's laws on the subject.

In Florida, for example, it is illegal to accept money for car repairs unless you've registered with the state's Consumer Protection people. (You cannot even get an occupational license for an auto shop in Florida UNTIL you register!) If you do, and you get caught, it's a VERY HEFTY fine you'll receive for your trouble, per vehicle you've worked on. And, they reward whistleblowing on violators, so odds of getting busted are sharply higher than many expect.

Although I don't like the idea of more government intrusion, requiring registrations for car repair shops - even shadetree back-yard operations - is a good idea as there are a lot of very unscrupulous mechanics out there that give the whole industry a bad stench and any mechanism that can help curb that will make the legitimate shops' lives easier.

So if you so much as do a neighbor'd oil change for beer money you'd be wise to make sure you're not inadvertantly running afoul of the law.
