I knitted my first pair of socks in college - entirely without a clue. I sewed the sole onto the rest of the sock.
Once you start to "get" knitting directions, things proceed much more quickly.
As for recent quilting, English paper pieced a six pointed star block, just to see how those work. There are so many little ear tags coming out of the center, I expect I might cut a circle there out of the batting if it were to be a completed surface quilted block. Lots of bulk, but I don't have my iron set up, so none of the recent stuff is pressed.
I really like the various videos for "string" and "strip" quilts that are made in small individual blocks. These are all pieced on some foundation, either paper, a muslin, or the batting itself. I like the direct approach to using the batting, but the batting bulk does not lend itself to a tiny running stitches on a small piece held in-hand, unsupported in a hoop. The square was acceptable, just clumbsy and unpleasant to manage - and I don't want to sew any more of those. I'll try another on muslin foundation (probably need starch). I am so used to tiny whip stitches on the edges of paper board stretched fabric, that my running stitches look huge and crooked, and not particularly secure. While it seems a little weird to EPP diagonal strips, that might be a good way to go. I do think the diagonally pieced "string" blocks would be a nice addition to the hexagon blocks.
No more sewing for a few days. The house is a disaster, the yard needs extensive work, and BF is coming home in two days.
