Food Keystone canned Beef in 28oz cans - limited time sale $5 each (online only)

Well faint and fall into it, my cans of beef came. The first order that walmart cancelled and refunded, the order that was supposed to come on Tuesday. Both boxes much have been damaged because they were in plain boxes, with the walmart box label cut off their box and taped on theses two boxes. One box had 7 cans (I had ordered 10) and the second box had 13 cans in it. I had also ordered 4 more cans that also came. So now I have 24 cans and four more on the way from Amazon. There are at least 5 cans from the two boxes that are damaged, but not badly. I'll be using them soonish. I know the keeystone meats are good because I have several cans of ground beef and I've tried it.

Good news Nomifyle!

My intuition (was going to say gut :)) is telling me this sale will end very soon. Amazon is now showing October 15 for this to be back in stock. It was October 10 last night and October 13 at noon today. Walmart is still showing current stock though.

I ordered another dozen cans from walmart, just in case. This will not be the new, long term price for what was one of their more expensive canned meats. Pre-sale, this was selling at a local walmart for almost $8 per can.

I ordered 4 from amazon, one at a time and now they wil not let me order any more. I think I'm good on this at 28 cans.

I ordered 4 from Amazon the first time. It wouldn’t allow me to order more after that, until exactly the 8th day from that order. I was then able to order 4 more.

Amazon is no longer offering the sale price. Now it is $12+ per can. Who knows if they'll offer it at the sale price again soon?
EDIT: 5 hours later and amazon is offering it at the sale price again, but it won't be available to ship until October 15.
Walmart is still offering it for the $4.87 sale price as of noon today.

We had open face, hot beef sandwiches for lunch. They were good. It was nice size chunks of beef in the juice from the cooked meat.
I did not add any seasoning and it was fine with just a slight hint of salt. My wife added salt and pepper, but she likes food spicier than I do.
She said the juice should be thickened into gravy for mashed potatoes next time. That sounds good.

This would be reasonable to eat cold out of a can, but it's better warmed up. Since it is cooked in the can, it should be safe to heat in the opened can over a small camp/hiking stove. Don't forget a can opener.

You can get ground beef, too? Having this on hand would be a huge boost to my pantry. We eat a lot of ground beef. Link?

Keystone meats come in 14oz and 28oz cans. Their meats include: Beef, Pork, Chicken, Ground beef, and Turkey.

The ground beef is very good.

Judy

Thanks, Judy, for letting me know about the ground beef. Thanks to you, too, 1911user, for the link. Sure wish it would go on sale! I'm gonna order some even if I can only buy a couple of cans at a time. Would love to order 10 cans like I did with the other beef, but the price is a bit steep for me right now for 10 cans at once. I buy the 28 oz size.

I used to buy two cans a month of the smaller size, its enough for two people. I used to use meat as more of a condement, before I married DH. I was buying grass fed beef and for one I could get a at least four meals from one pound, it was a satisfying amount. Now I'm blessed to have venison, as DH hunts.

I just received the 12 cans from the last walmart order. No dents! and a full 5 year shelf life.
Amazon and Walmart are still running the sale price of $4.87.

I received 12 cans yesterday; I ordered 12 hoping that they'd come in a case box for easy storage. Nope, they were thrown into a box about 4 times too large with a small strip of packing pillows. 9 were dented, some very badly. I took the 9 back to our local Walmart today, got a refund, and DH asked if I will reorder. I told him it's such a good deal I'll just keep ordering, and keeping the ones that aren't dented, until I get as many as we need...LOL! Will have them delivered to the store like 1911user said so I can take care of damages right there without having to haul the box around.

Hmm.....All 10 of my cans were individually wrapped in bubble wrap really good, then put into a large box with more bubble wrap. None of mine were damaged.

Getting my first order ready for the ground beef. I can't wait to try it. A couple of cans each payday will add up fast. That's all I'm able to do on a limited income budget twice a month.

Inconsistent packaging seems to be the reality of online orders. I looked carefully at any dented cans of the beef and did not return any. None had leaked or even looked like they might leak so I kept them.

However, on cans of freeze dried or dehydrated food, any damage/dent that looks like it might affect the seal of the can is returned. Even a small amount of humid outside air could cause some of the freeze dried food to start reconstituting in the can then spoil. That's why they use a sealed can/pouch with an oxygen absorber for freeze dried. Mountain house #10 cans don't seem to be as sturdy as the Keystone cans.

Just remember that any significant dent does reduce the shelf life of the can. If you are planning on consuming them within, oh... 12-18 months, it's not a problem. If you are tucking them away in long-term storage, you don't want them to have any serious dents. Essentially, a "sharp" dent (as opposed to a "gentle" rounded "pushed-in" spot on the can) weakens the metal enough that if/when it starts to rust it will fail there first.

We don't have a real problem with cans rusting even after 5+ years. It is drier here in OK.

The $4.87 sale price is still good at amazon and walmart. I continue to be surprised the sale is still active, but it is.

This too shall pass.
The cans I ordered were just tossed in a big box with a little bit of packing material. Thankfully only one can was dented and we've already eaten that one. But I don't think I want to order that way again.

Ordering something like the canned beef is a gamble and has been for years from both walmart and amazon. I had multiple recent orders with both. The final tally was half the cans from each had some level of shipping dent.
I have enough for awhile and saving $3 per can was worth the gamble.

I'm seeing spam pricing start to increase. That's my next focus to add more to the pantry especially with the continuing news of african swine fever in asia.
Maybe some keystone pork as well. Walmart has that online at the normal price of $6.28 per 28oz can.

I've been getting a spam like meat at the Dollar Tree, little smaller can, but its $1. I have not tried it yet, but I like potted meat so it'll probably fine for me.

I just got my 24 cans of $1 lentils from Vitacost. Hard to find canned lentils and these are tasty.

I think I'm good with my 28 cans of the Keystone Beef, almost half of the cans are dented, only a couple are pretty bad, but the can is not penetrated.

Speaking of Spam. While I was reorganizing some shelves in my pantry room, yesterday, I counted how many cans of Spam I have in storage. I'm at my 52 can limit on it. But, I've used up all the Bacon Spam, and would like to get more of that. Not quite at my 52 can limit on all the other canned meats, but getting close. I'm almost there with tuna, chicken, and smoked ham. I'm sorely lacking on canned beef, but I still have a 6 month supply of ground beef and pork each in my freezer to work with while I accumulate more.

Keystone has canned pork, like their canned beef. From walmart, it's about the same price per pound as spam.
We're fine with spam and I know from experience that the original and bacon flavor stores well.

My main concern with spam is the pull-top opening. The metal on the top has to be thinner around the edge which is a potential damage point.
Because of that, I'll pay more to buy it local and carefully inspect the can for damage.

It's hard to pass up more of the canned beef at $3 per pound to pay $4+ per pound for canned pork.

I grimace when a can has a pull top, I just threw out (to the pigs) some canned ham that would have still been good, but the edges of the pull top had some age on them and one can had green stuff inside the can. I just bought a couple of cans of corned beef that has the key opener, but the cans of spam like meat I bought at Dollar Tree have the pull top. However, the hams had not been stored well.

Yes, it worries me, too. That's why I've emptied out one freezer, and will only use it for things like cornmeal, flour, cheese, and butter with a generator backup. My other freezer has the meat in it. I'm becoming more dependent on canned meats as I use all the freezer meats. As long as we can keep the generator running, we'll be ok for awhile. We've stored plenty of gas for the genny just for the freezers. I would love to get to the point of only having one freezer going. I'm still working on that goal.

I refuse to buy anything that have those pull tops! Spam is the only canned anything that is in storage that have those. We eat a lot of Spam, so all of mine stays in a good rotation. I've only had two cans over the years to go bad. Spam is so versatile that I use it in several recipes that we eat on a regular basis. The Bacon Spam, fried thin and crisp makes some great BLT's, too. The key is to only store what you eat now. That way everything gets rotated from oldest to newest on a regular basis. My pantry will never be finished. I'm always adding new to it as we eat out of it.

I find that fruit seems to come only in pull tops these days. I can find some things without, but mostly they all have pull tops. I can't wait until we have more fruit production. That will solve the problem pronto!

Yep, that's exactly how my first order was; had to return 9 out of 12. I reordered, 24 because it's such a good deal. This time they came in the same huge box, but having more cans helped, plus instead of the flimsy bubble pillows there was a loooong strip of stiff brown paper...so long that when I rolled it up to save it (hoarder? LOL!) the tight roll is literally 2" across. So the cans were all in great shape. And fortunately we live near a Walmart so I had them shipped to store & opened them right there just in case. Dh and I tried a can; it's very good, and goes a long way. We could easily get two to four or more meals out of a can, depending on recipe.

I don't have any Spam (or Spam-like product) stored because it makes me sick to my stomach. I might get one or two cans -- I can eat a very small amount of it once in a while -- but it will never be a large part of our stored foods. I have lots of tuna and chicken, and some beef, including corned beef, which I can eat.

Those pop-top cans really worry me, too. I think the cans with a key, like the corned beef, are sturdier, but the pop-top cans should be stuff that you use regularly and can rotate.

Journey, you got a deal. They probably didn't want to pay to return heavy food items.

I had a final walmart order come in yesterday (6 pork, 6 beef) that had been shipped very roughly plus not packed well. 3 of the 12 cans had dents that crushed into the can at least an inch. I returned those while at the store. The other 9 were relatively OK so I kept those. Every shipped order is a gamble and eventually this beef sale will end.

The upside is I was able to get the last 4 cans of beef from the store shelf (no dents!) and pay the online price. I'm fairly sure they aren't supposed to do that, but it worked once.

I checked and the canned beef sale is still ongoing with both walmart and amazon, but I don't plan to order more beef for now.

The $4.87 sale price appears to be over. The price for the same 28oz can of beef chunks is now $6.98 at both walmart and amazon. Amazon has a limit of 10 cans.

I didn't see any other keystone meat currently at what I'd consider a sale price.

I buy canned BBQ pulled pork at Walmart each time I go. It's Great Value brand, but it's great for pulled pork BBQ sandwiches. It's about the same price as a can of Spam. 12 oz cans. They also have Fajita steak strips in sauce in 12 oz cans, too, along with roast beef and gravy. All the same price, I think. Thing is, the new cans coming out have those awful pop top lids. I refuse to buy them, now.

Too bad the Keystone ground beef is no longer on sale. DH was going to make me out another order along with more dehydrated green peppers. Drats!

The keystone canned ground beef is still priced $6.28 for a 28oz can at both places. That was not on sale and hasn't changed.

The canned beef that was on sale for the last month is really canned beef chunks (1" cubes per the Keystone description in the "How It's Made" video on page 1).

Oh, ok. I misunderstood thinking it was on sale. I guess my last order of ground beef was full price then. I just tell DH what I want him to order, and he does it for me. I don't do online transactions where money is concerned. He does all of our online shopping. Even paying full price, I only had him order two cans along with some other items I can't get in the store.

I was thinking about what I said earlier about the price of Walmart's Great Value meat costing about the same as a can of Spam, but I was wrong. Each 12oz can is around the 5+ dollar mark. Spam is cheaper than that, at least where I get it.

Yeah, but even at full price it is not a bad deal.
