On April 25th 1915, the forces of the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps landed at Gallipoli with a goal of opening a passage to the Black Sea. Ottoman forces forces led by Mustafa Kemal (Ataturk) were dug in an put up fierce resistance. The initially expected quick battle led to an 8 month stalemate with great casualties on both sides. The allied armies were withdrawn at the end of 1915 having lost over 56,000 soldiers, including 8709 Australians and 2721 New Zealanders.
