USFK Service Member Confirmed with COVID-19

CAMP HUMPHREYS, PYEONGTAEK, Republic of Korea

A USFK soldier stationed at Camp Carroll tested positive for COVID-19, marking the first time a U.S. service member has tested positive for the virus.

The patient, a 23-year old male, is currently in self quarantine at his off-base residence. He visited Camp Walker on 24 Feb. and Camp Carroll 21-25 Feb. KCDC and USFK health professionals are actively conducting contact tracing to determine whether any others may have been exposed.

USFK is implementing all appropriate control measures to help control the spread of COVID-19 and remains at risk level “high” for USFK peninsula-wide as a prudent measure to protect the force.

USFK encourages all personnel to continue to practice strict proper hygiene procedures as the best ways to prevent the spread of viruses and protect the USFK population: wash hands with soap and water or use hand sanitizer, do not touch your face or eyes with unclean hands, avoid handshaking and unnecessary contact with others, non-mission essential large gatherings, clean all common-use areas and items, use caution when traveling off-installation, and most importantly if feeling sick or ill, avoid going to work or school and seek medical treatment for proper diagnosis.

The Dems must have got their talking points, blaming.... wait for it..... President Trump for not asking for either the right stuff or not enough or too late on the emergency appropriation request.

Probably tested a soundbite equating Trump and Corona Virus with Chernobyl. MS NBC CNN the NY Times they will all probably blathering the same soundbite, cause they are that freakin stupid and will use anything to win the next election.
Yep you demo’s are blaming US President for the virus that erupted in China. If he shutdowns travel he is over reacting and hurting allies, if he asks for Billions to fight its not enough and he is underreacting???. What a collective clownshow.
:jstr:
Trump asked for 2.5 billion for this. The Dems will ask for 3.5 billion in pork for their crap like high speed trains to nowhere

Most likely. Anything that causes a strain on the heart muscle will eventually lead to cell damage and cell death. As those cells go through apoptosis (breaking down and their cell membranes becoming 'leaky'), Troponin I will begin to leak out. TNI is normally not found in the blood, so detecting it above minimal levels is indicative of heart damage. It is one of the early markers we test for in people with heart attacks and allows us to get a sense of how 'big' the attack was as well.

Patients in ARDS are going to be profoundly hypoxic without support. Now imagine that many of them in their 50's, 60's and older have underlying atherosclerosis/ischemic heart disease. It doesn't take too low of a blood oxygen level to start to cause cardiac damage. I would imagine this is an important mechanism in why older patients and those with chronic illnesses/habits like:

-smoking
-diabetes
-CHF
-COPD
-atherosclerosis

are all going to fair worse than younger patients with a healthier cardiovascular/pulmonary system.

Roundaben--

Given your conversation above w Trivium Pursuit--and the Twitter video from the Chinese lady CONFIRMING what we'd already heard about still-alive people being creamted because when they reached the point of needing assistance to breathe the hospital had NOTHING to help them breathe--no respirators, no oxygen machines----

I have a question for you.

I'm in my 60's, have had pneumonia 4 times (first time in just my 20's, twice during my 30's, last time was last year - March--and I thought I'd NEVER get over it)---PLUS I am allergic to cephalosporins, macrobid, sulfa (VERY allergic to that) and react very badly (toxic, not allergic) to floxacins. Only antibiotics left I can take are the cillins (oddly enough NOT allergic to those, though I am to the cephalosporins), doxycycline, erythromycin, etc. I also have a family history of heart troubles, though personally have experienced nothing worse than episodes of irregular heartbeat (usually from getting too tired, not drinking enough water, too low on potassium, etc.). Plus I'm about 40 pounds overweight & out of shape.

What I am worried about is what happens to my special-needs sons (young and healthy) if something happens to me.

So while I can deal with the "flu" if it just STAYS flu, I am worried about it turning into pneumonia, given how many antibiotics I'm allergic to. I also am worried about an over-loaded hospital system where I can't go in daily to my doctor's for albuterol inhalation therapy (which she did to keep me out of the hospital last year). (I do have an aerosol inhalation machine at home and some leftover albuterol doses, if they're still good after a year).

Now here's my question.

I was looking into the possibility--in case of mass quarantines being declared here OR hospitals becoming overloaded or both---of getting an oxygen concentrator. However, have learned---you can't just go out and buy one of those without a doctor's prescription, you can't legally sell (and thus, can't buy used) a used one unless "all original materials" come with it, and over-using or improperly using oxygen can be dangerous, even fatal.

Given that---weighing one thing against another---is it a wise thing for us to "consider" trying to lay hands on an oxygen concentrator---or could we be doing ourselves more harm than good by having one but not using it right? (too soon, too long, at the improper time where it can CAUSE respiratory distress instead of curing it)--????

....Or should I be glad I've updated my will, just "do the best I can"---and pray? (iow, I'm screwed)

This is a list of countries by annual per capita consumption of tobacco cigarettes. Cigarettes are smoked by over 1 billion people, which is nearly 20% of the world's population in 2014. About 800 million of these smokers are men.

While smoking rates have leveled off or declined in developed nations, especially among men, in developing nations tobacco consumption continues to rise. More than 80% of all smokers now live in countries with low or middle incomes, and 60% in just 10 countries, a list headed by China.[1] China is the world's most populated country, and is also the leading country in the cigarette industry. In 2014, China produced and consumed more than 30% of the cigarettes in the world. There is a strong relationship between socioeconomic status (SES) and smoking behaviors. According to research, developing countries have the highest rate of tobacco use. “China was found to be one of the countries with the highest male-to-female ratio of smoking prevalence”: 74% of males and 8% of females were smokers.[2] Over half of adult males in Indonesia are smokers (57%, but mostly kretek, a local form of cigarette) and China (53% estimated), and nearly half in Bangladesh, though for women the figure is much lower.[3]
----------------------

It appears that smoking adds to the instance of where the infected are more likely to become more ill especially in China.... Living conditions also impact infections....

This will extrapolate across the world in countries with high rates of smoking such as Italy, N & S Korea, Japan and Iran.... American consumption of cigarettes is fairly low compared to other countries....

Deaths appear to be related to the elderly and those that have compromised health....

If you are not elderly or have compromised health or smoke cigs, you chances of surviving the virus is high especially if you isolate from the general public and do not go out....

It will be interesting if it does and will prove without a shadow of a doubt that this virus cannot be stopped.

Better yet, tell her the following

1) Mask preferably leather. The more it covers the head, the better
2) Restraints for those who may get sick. Handcuffs or leather restraints work well
3) Chaps to protect from the virus, again leather would be best
4) A bodice, again preferably leather.
5) High heel boots, in order to keep you out of the muck and virus contamination
6) Short whip or whip like device, this is used to keep people away.

This would complete your basic level PPE for the virus....

Bring out the gimp!

Not going anywhere near your AO.

also guy a few miles down the road has cattle. figure me and a few neighbors can trade or buy a cow and split it.
Be careful, soybeans can kill you if eaten the wrong way in quantity...look into it if you are serious. It can have value, just be careful.

Something maybe going on....

Anyone else seeing an abnormal number of airplane lights at night????

Maybe not "more" than usual (and it's too cold to do much sky watching right now... heading for a winter storm watch Thursday-Saturday) but Ive been actually wakened by a strobe light (high in the clear north sky, which l can see from my bedroom window), which then proved to look like it was attached to a plane thst looked "thick" and heavy, with a deep thrm although it was way high. It happened the last two nights.

I don't remember seeing that strobe before and if they are the huge military planes I think they might be, I've only seen them cross our farm once or twice... at least once was the day after 911.

I dunno. We're in south-western N.Y state...

Oregon has decided to report numbers. That post is in this thread somewhere from last night and in the NW Members section. I do wonder why they have suddenly decided to report.

I suspect it is because Senate candidate for Greg Walden's seat-- Knute Buehler--who is an MD, and who previously ran against Gov. Brown came out yesterday and said that in this kind of emergency, there was no excuse for not putting out a little more information. I suspect that Brown didn't want to give him any more ammo to use in this, or future elections, so last night, out it came. Good for Knute. At least that is my theory.

You are 100% correct; I think everyone will be exposed to it. Everyone should come to grips with this. Prepare for a mild to moderate illness, because beyond that level you're not likely to survive.

But, I still say we need to wait a bit for some real, hard data from the Western nations to determine what the mortality rate is.

Well, just damn....I may have to find a way to get to Costco for my planned last run before the sheeple go crazy, like soonest. Methinks the CDC just opened up the floodgates.
I’m doing Sams today.

I did my Sam's run today. Could not tell that anyone there was shopping for the virus. Saw only ONE lady wearing a mask--Asian. Kept my distance from her. All shelves well-stocked, no shortages. Did get one of the last packages of my favorite TP (Scott's) but plenty of other brands still there. Absolutely FURIOUS to discover you can no longer buy those great big cardboard boxes of Carnation powdered milk! They apparently no longer make / sell it! I am furious with myself that I recently donated all my old Y2K supply of powedered milk (something like 15 boxes) to a food donation center---I figured it was old and I'd just get some new at Sam's. Didn't know they had STOPPED MAKING IT except in little bitty bags or small cans!!! Even on the internet couldn't find it. Finally bought two BAGS (plastic BAGS---am concerned how well those are sealed and will last) at Kroger. ANYONE KNOW WHERE I can get LARGE boxes of powdered milk anymore?

I am comfortable right now assuming the 70% infection with a 10% mortality. Actually I feel that is pretty well padded, even. Till I see some 'man on the street' testing, I process the event as Spanish Influenza-esque event. Certainly a time in which our generation will face shared burdens and sacrifice. Also the opportunities, if we choose not to waste them, to make some needed changes. Globalism Kills! Bring our manufacturing base HOME! Borderless lands KILL! etc etc etc

That makes a huge amount of sense! No one goes anywhere, everything is closed, the virus (where ever it would be) in theory should burn itself out. Brilliant....best idea to date. Maybe we'll get lucky and they will do that.

ETA - nothing else tried has worked. Three weeks seems too short, but the whole idea makes great sense. I don't know that we have much to lose at this point...the alternatives are straight from hell.

I suggested this to my wife. She is adamant the that this will never happen

No, I haven't found out which hospital(s). I was in and out of Mom's house and just caught a blurb on the local news at noon.
There were 2 in Santa Clara (Chinese traveler and at home spouse) 2 in San Benito (same) , 1 in Humbolt (and a suspected for the partner,) 1 in Sacramento (recent). There were 2 in Riverside from the Wuhan evacuees and I think a new one from Orange County today. All CA

A couple years back before my partner passed, and I moved to my kids property, we had chosen a sustainable life in the woods...large garden, fruit bushes, apple trees, etc. canned and froze lots. I hunted deer, grouse...fished. Anyway, and this is my point...:)...my sister and brother in law visited from the cities. We had built a large pantry in the basement, and it was well filled with OUR efforts. My brother in law meandered to the basement and found our pantry, even though it had a closed door. He proceeded to come up stairs, tell my sister all about everything in the pantry, and told us they would be coming to our house if things got bad...they and kids and grandkids. I heard the same statement from him the other day over the phone...even though I have much less now then we did then. It frustrates me to think they are of that part of society that thinks what is mine is yours! Anyway, I know lots of society is like that, it just ticked me off to hear the same thing coming from him, after all the "education" and help I have imparted to them over the years. I totally understand your head banging. LOL.

I had a friend jokingly say about the same thing a few years ago. I said, sure, c'mon over. I'll gladly share a few cans of beans with you in exchange for the title to your truck. We laughed, but he got the point.

I posed a question a few days back and don't remember an answer - Does marijuana smoke have the same effect on ACE-2 receptors as tobacco smoking? What about e-cigarettes? (Doesn't tobacco increase the receptors or does it just gum them up? I thought it was increase as they were saying ex-smokers were also at risk.)

Doesn't mean that individuals, couples, or families can't do it. Just hunker in, triple the time (6 weeks) and hopefully it will burn out by then. My only concern would be if it rears its ugly head again in the fall with a more virulent spread, like the 1918 flu.

as suggested the only way to assure a complete burn out is for everyone to stay home for 3-4 weeks

Guangzhou Family Cluster Appears to Experience Extra-Long Covid-19 Incubation

A family in South China’s Guangdong province may have experienced a Covid-19 incubation period of a month, another case that could challenge the widely held notion that the maximum period is around 14 days and raise questions about measures taken to prevent the spread of the virus.

Authorities in Guangzhou’s Liwan district announced (link in Chinese) over the weekend that several members of the family of six tested positive for Covid-19 following a near month-long quarantine after traveling to the city from the epicenter of the epidemic.

The Pan family took a train from Wuhan, Hubei province, to Guangzhou on Jan. 22, and were then placed under quarantine. On Feb. 20, one of them, identified as the “son-in-law,” developed a fever. He tested positive for the disease on Feb. 21, and his wife and a child were diagnosed the following day.

According to the local authorities, the family was under medical observation between Jan. 24 and Feb. 7, something routinely done in the district for those arriving from Hubei. Nothing unusual was reported during this period, and the monitoring was lifted.

If confirmed by scientists, the case would add to evidence that challenges the current medical understanding of the disease’s incubation period, or the time it takes for a growing pathogen to reach a quantity necessary to produce symptoms in the host.

A study of more than 1,099 coronavirus patients by Chinese scientists, published in early February as a preprint, or a paper that has not been peer reviewed, has already made the case that the incubation period could be as long as 24 days, rather than the 14-day maximum previously believed.

Meanwhile, Xinyang, a city in Central China’s Henan province, announced on Feb. 16 that local authorities had diagnosed a “highly unusual” case where a patient tested positive on a third screening, some 34 days after leaving Wuhan. Furthermore, a person in Zhongshan, Guangdong, who had undergone a routine two-week quarantine after arriving from Hubei on Jan. 26 tested positive almost a month later.

At a Feb. 18 press conference, Chinese epidemiologist Zhong Nanshan, who discovered the SARS coronavirus in 2003 and co-authored the 1,099-person study, said that he did not find the longer incubation periods to be strange, explaining that there are always exceptions.

Of the Covid-19 patients studied, 13 had incubation periods longer than 14 days, though the majority developed signs of illness within two to seven days of contracting the virus, Zhong said.

According to an article by German researchers in the New England Journal of Medicine, asymptomatic Covid-19 carriers may be contagious, and the widespread practice of screening based on symptoms may not be effective.

Many countries continue to use two-week quarantine periods as yardsticks for assessing citizens with potential infections.
On Feb. 24, Guangdong lowered its Covid-19 epidemic emergency response from level one, the country’s highest, to level two.

I noticed the thread on how America would react if the Russians used a tactical nuke somewhere in the world against an allie. The answer was, with one of our own, so they are now being placed on our subs, traded out for a big boomer. It's as if the deep state is tipping their hand, almost flaunting it... I think most think a nuclear exchange is coming, eventually. They've stated they want the worlds population reduced drastically, this virus is man made, world war will be also. Why do we not believe what they have stated? Look at the world as a soap opera. The Mueller debacle, all of Hillary's crimes, and all the .gov agencies caught lying, breaking laws, going after Trump in a manner that surpasses the bar for a coup attempt. The deep state has been caught, exposed, cornered.......dangerous times, as we see horrible man made catastrophe's, in diverse places.

Then one can study eschatology and learn all about Bible Prophecy and it's implications on the age we are living in. It is an amazing soap opera. Could not have been written better.

I think it's official, the White Horse of the Apocalypse is running, (Conquest). The Pale horse (Covid 19 and the Muslim menace fall in here) is also loosed on the world. The Black Horse is about to run rampant with weather events and locusts, so it appears. Leaving the Red Horse (World War). I suspect when we are at our weakest, or an attacker in a last ditch effort, before they lose the ability. Again, once one Domino goes down, it brings others with it. Proxy wars are all the rage.

2020 being perfect vision, perfect hindsight, will make all the above perfectly clear and possibly in play. Mark, my words, imho.

So sleep well J......Peace beyond all understanding. Except for those who do. :-)

Now running for Emperor.
Then we would see the three days until anarchy theory kick in. Three days of food in most cities, less in most homes. Game on.
You lock-down the country by COUNTY. Citizens are still free to travel within their county. Law Enforcement is functional, emergency services are still available, infrastructure still works, and people can still grab that one last item they need. AND, hotspots can be identified, isolated, and treated, with efficiency. This only works if it gets implemented NOW. In another week or two, ALL of the counties will be hot, and it won't matter what "The Plan" is.

Places like Baltimore, Detroit, or L.A. are going to be Mad Max no matter what, so just park some Brads and M-1's around the perimeter and let it all burn.
