I'm planning to head back to AZ mounrains before long-few gas stops in the area's I go so I'm thinking about adding a carrier for a 5 gallon jerry can ro the Jeep. Can't put it on the back because I have a liftgate so that leaves sidemount or front. Any thoughts to either?

Receiver hitch?

Do you have a receiver for a hitch? I have a receiver on the rear, and INTEND to put on on the front (for both spot hitches and occasional winch use). There are many carriers made to mount in receivers. I made one for my motorcycle. In my case, I included a female receiver in the carrier, so I can still use a light trailer while the carrier is in use. You might be able to fabricate a carrier that will do the job when you need it, then "unplug" from the receiver when you want to get at the tailgate.

Many SUV's, including Cherokees and such, use swing-away carriers that often hold both a spare tire and a gas can.

In the absence of a receiver, you might come up with something that bolts onto the bumper, but incorporates a hinge or quick-removal pins so you can access the tailgate.

Similar carriers are possible in front, but beware of blocking air flow to the radiator. And be aware of lights on both ends.

No hitch. I've a vrush guard off a TJ that I'm going to do a little modding to put on the front.

I'd considered a swing-away tire/gas carrier but the cost is beyond me so I put my spare on the roof. Don't really want to get into something that forces me to have to lift 40+ pounds of gas when I want in the rear of the Jeep sonce alll my tools are in there. :shr:

That narrows things down a bit. I sometimes carry the plastic 5 gallon Gott/Rubbermaid cans inside the rig, though generally not for a long distance. Sounds like an adaptation on the brush guard might be your option. Just be careful not to block headlights or air to the radiator.

Have you considered a trailer? ;)

I keep an empty 5gal inside too but empty does no good. I've got it set up to vent out so it reduces the smell but when I'm camping I like to have that space available...

How about a small swing gate...check with a local fence maker...probably for less than 100 bucks

post a pic of that jeep swing gate with the tire carrier...

1 1/4 emt (electrical thin conduit) would probably work. Harbour Freight has an inexpensive hydraulic tube bender.

you may find a sutiable swing gate at the junk yard.

or .... mount the can holder on the passenger side of the Jeep behind rear wheel..

or .... carry one or two 5 gal cans on your front bumper.
