Mysterious explosions plague Pennsylvania suburbs

A mysterious set of explosions in the suburbs of Philadelphia over the past two months has strained emergency responses to other calls and left authorities in Pennsylvania asking for help to track down whoever is behind the blasts.

Since April 2, there have been over 20 early-morning explosions in northern Bucks County, located about 45 miles northwest of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania State Police said in a news release Tuesday.

“Fortunately to date no one has been injured; however, we are attempting to prevent someone from accidentally getting injured by these explosions, including the individual responsible,” state police said in a news released obtained by Fox News. “These events disrupt emergency response personnel from their normal course of duty, straining local resources and impeding emergency personnel from responding to other calls for service.”

Authorities did not release information about a potential suspect, but asked the community to remain vigilant.

“Regardless of how insignificant you think your tip may be, we strongly encourage you to come forward with your information,” state police said.

Residents across the area have reported booms loud enough to rattle windows and shake walls taking place between 1 and 4:30 a.m. and waking them up.

“It’s just like a boom. That’s just how it sounds,” Donna Weaver told FOX29 at the end of April.

Weaver, a resident of Quakertown, said she heard the booms several times over the course of the month, which woke her up in the middle of the night.

“I don’t know and it’s kind of scary,” she told FOX29. “Because I thought of thinking maybe its underground, maybe underground somewhere.”

The Richland Township Police Department said in a Facebook post last month that they had not given anyone permission to blast in the area.

“If anyone sees anything suspicious in that area, please reach out to Police or the township. If you are close, try to pinpoint the direction it is coming from,” police said.

A spokeswoman from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives told PennLive.com that the explosions are possibly from Tannerite, which is a mix of ammonium nitrate and aluminum powder and legal to buy. Firearms enthusiasts typically use Tannerite for target practice.

“From what I understand they’re pretty big explosions,” ATF spokeswoman Charlene Hennessy told PennLive. “Some people have reported their houses shaking.”

Pennsylvania State Police are asking those with information to call Lehigh Valley Crime Stoppers at (800) 426-TIPS.

The ongoing saga of the mystery booms being heard across the United States continues, and possibly taken a turn for the spooky. Over the past year, unexplained explosions and booming noises have been shaking homes and terrifying residents in many rural parts of the continental U.S. While the vast majority of these anomalous booms are left unexplained, the FBI has taken a particular interest in mysterious explosion noises recently heard across rural Pennsylvania just north of Philadelphia. Does this mean some sort of sleeper cell terrorist group might be practicing with improvised explosives?

Given the craters found alongside rural roads, though, who knows? To add more mystery and a healthy dose of conspiracy to these recent booms in Pennsylvania, though, news reports suggest the ever-elusive and ominous Men in Black might now be on the case, doing what they do best: creeping out bewildered eyewitnesses. Is there more to this case than meets the eye?


Speaking to The Intelligencer, a newspaper covering the Upper Bucks County area of Pennsylvania where these mystery booms took place, residents described the “kinda spooky” experience they had following one of the recent unexplained booms. One resident who asked that her name not be used claims two eerily-familiar-sounding and unidentified agents of some kind showed up at her door unannounced, questioning her in a somewhat threatening manner:

Two men in dark suits and dark car were banging on our front door and back door at the time until I answered. I could see they had badges under their coats, but they didn’t identify themselves. It was unnerving. Then they left.

What should be made of the appearance of the MIB? Is there more to this case than some backwoods paramilitary group or “lone wolf” testing explosives on the side of empty highways? Were these Men in Black merely men who happened to be wearing black working on behalf of an undisclosed organization like the NSA or CIA, or is something spookier afoot in rural Pennsylvania? As with all things MIB, we’ll likely never know.

The FBI Begins Investigating Unexplained Mystery Booms

One of the most disconcerting developments over the last few years has been the rise in unexplained booms or explosion noises being heard all across the United States. While many theories about their origins have been put forward, to date no definitive cause has been identified. Of course, it could be that many of these mystery booms are unrelated, but the fact is that nearly all of the stories sound identical. What could be causing these anomalous noises? Unknown seismic activity? Hydraulic fracking? Meteorites? Secret tests of classified aerospace technology? Domestic terrorists testing explosives?


Who knows? Until a cause is found, these mysterious booming noises remain a total mystery. While coverage and interest in these anomalous sounds seem to have so far been confined to local news outlets and mystery news sites like this one, it seems that these unexplained booms have now attracted the attention in the highest law enforcement agency in the United States: the FBI.


On May 22, homes throughout Upper Bucks and Lehigh Counties just north of Philadelphia were rattled by an extremely loud explosion around 4:00 a.m. “It’s a rumble. It actually, like, rumbles the ground like an earthquake would happen but with a loud like boom. I thought that somebody was making a tunnel or space junk fell out of the sky,” said area woman Susan Crompton. There have been multiple reports of similar booms in the area over the last few months, all of which have occurred early in the morning hours. Just like in other recent mystery boom stories, the sounds have been described as “mysterious and near-deafening,” loud enough to shake the ground for miles.

CBS News in Philadelphia has confirmed that the Federal Bureau of Investigation and Pennsylvania State Police are now working together to investigate the cause of these anomalous booms. Can the FBI crack the case? Will they reveal the truth to the public if they do?

a few friends of mine on the 4th of july were playing with there cutting torch, and they had this big pipe, and they filled it with the gasses, and then ingited it, they said some people reported hearing it over a half a mile away (in town), the police stopped by and suggested they stop celebrating,

one with a pickup and a cutting torch and a pipe in the back of there truck could easily be driving around "having fun" and never leaving a trace besides a flash of light,

Authorities have made an arrest in connection with the mysterious booms going off in the middle of the night over the past several weeks in one Pennsylvania neighborhood.

Since April, residents in Bucks and Lehigh counties have been reporting thunderous noises strong enough to rattle their homes.

Aerial footage from ABC Philadelphia station WPVI shows investigators searching multiple locations in Upper Bucks County on Thursday.

The suspect is expected to be arraigned Thursday afternoon, according to the Bucks County District Attorney's Office.

Last month, authorities discovered that the source of the booms was from someone setting of explosions overnight, WPVI reported.

Residents, some living several miles apart, described rumbling sounds that would shift the ground beneath them. As of May 30, more than 20 explosions had been reported.

Upper Black Eddy resident Nick Zangli first heard the booms on May 12 around 3:30 a.m., he told WPVI.

"I happened to be awake and it scared the heck out of me," Zangli said, adding that it caused him to jump out of bed. "It was definitely a very large explosion."

Zangli saw what appears to be the site of one of the explosions after another resident told him about a large hole on the side of a road nearby.

"I stopped and looked at it," he said. "It was obviously an explosion. It had blown debris across the road and stuff."

Haycock Township resident Sue Crompton told WPVI that a loud boom near her trailer "actually rumbled the whole room."

In addition to the district attorney's office, the Pennsylvania State Police, the FBI and the ATF are assisting in the investigation.
