New Bill in Tennessee Would Require Gun Safety Courses to be Taught in Public Schools

Lawmakers in Tennessee have passed a new bill which would require the teaching of gun safety courses in public schools. It now heads to the desk of the governor.
This would be a major win for the Second Amendment and the people of Tennessee. If it passes into law, it could also become a model for other states.

This would also be considered a win by conservatives who are tired of seeing public schools increasingly focus on ‘woke’ social justice content instead of the basics.
FOX News reported:
Public school students in this state could soon be required to take gun safety courses
The Tennessee state legislature passed a bill, which is now headed to the governor’s desk, requiring public schools to teach “age-appropriate and grade-appropriate” gun safety courses to students starting next year.
“We see this proposed legislation as a critical step in averting firearm related accidents while fostering greater awareness and responsibility among gun owners,” the bill’s sponsor, Rep. Chris Todd, a Republican, said in a February hearing.
The Tennessee Senate passed HB 2882 in a 24-3 vote on Thursday after the bill made its way through the House in February. If signed by Gov. Bill Lee, the courses will begin in the 2025-2026 school year.
The gun safety classes would be taught primarily through videos and online resources and would teach things like firearm storage, school safety, and how to avoid getting hurt if a student finds a gun and to immediately notify an adult if a gun is found. The bill stipulates the lessons will “not include the use or presence of live ammunition, live fire, or live firearms.”
Tennessee Democrats are outraged, naturally.

Republican controlled legislatures across the country should consider following Tennessee’s lead on this.

So, do they start in kindergarten, teaching children how to chew Pop Tarts into the shape of a handgun?

Asking for a friend with a sweet tooth.

I think that is a good idea.

My father used to teach a safety course at the local high school. He taught girls how to handle a gun safely and how dangerous they could be. This was in rural Illinois back in the 60's.

I think there is a slight difference between this and hunter safety classes.

Hunter safety classes were for kids thinking about hunting. This would include kids who don't/won't hunt but are around guns like their dad, or cousin is a gang banger and guns are laying around, and an 8 YO will want to play with one, and accidently shoot his brother.

Because those guys will never teach gun safety.

As long as they don't turn it into a brainwashing and fear mongering thing, I don't see a problem. My school didn’t have that course when I was a kid. But I remember doing the equivalent as part of some youth group.

I had to have been pretty young because we weren't allowed to handle anything. We were just taught guidelines. And how to hold one if we found on, so that we wouldn't accident fire it.

They might have to make an exclusion for the little darlings who are criminally inclined. And convicted already.

Perhaps I'm being to harsh on y'all?

Been staying out of Memphis since the shooting in the Pyramid parking lot.

And I did use gang bangers which was probably the wrong example, so since the bill is for the whole state it might help other kids who have family with guns in the house. Including those in McNairy County.

The McNairy County example might be a bad one too. And I'm sort of joking on that. Sb's uncle and Buford were good friends.

Memphis deserves it with the Soros DA and cashless bail. No mercy...

If children were taught the mechanics of a semi-auto I see some utility. Dropping the magazine still leaves one in the chamber.

I would definitely give parents the opportunity to opt out.

The planned course was to be "through videos and online courses". The same delivery mechanism for the fake violent games in which so many young people immerse themselves.

While " Hands-on training" may be more difficult to implement it would remove some of the mystery. Biden's "shotgun training" and "lung-blower 9mm" could even be incorporated.

I might suggest a field trip to a hospital Emergency Dept or even a morgue. Age appropriate of course.

Give every child a pocket constitution too.

Most of us had "hunter safety" in school. Safe gun handling transcends hunting safety. Many of these children today will never hunt. Those same students will never understand the Constitution.

Yeah, I could agree with the scare them on the safety failures deal. Though I think a good video or interactive VR morgue visit may be more effective with the current crowd. Cherry pick the best examples for the discussion so to speak...

Our local sportsman club teaches the Minnesota gun safety class every spring. It is held at the school one night a week for four weeks. It is optional, but ~90 percent of the sixth grade kids end up taking it. There is a test at the end. After passing the test they have a field day, where they spend a couple hours practicing what they've learned, carrying guns, crossing fences, climbing into deer stands, etc. They shoot .22s provided by the MN DNR. For the last ten years or so the field day has been held at our farm.

That was what my Driver's Ed teacher did. You may remember those. Yeah he would thread up the film and by end of the film a lot of teens would have headed off to the bathroom to puke. They were some real life gore.

The mommies of today who didn't watch the film, would be all up in arms making their children puke like that.

Our hunting club does the same thing.

My DIL who was in her 30's but had never had a hunting license, or safety course had to take it. State Law says anyone born after......1970 (?) has to have a safety class. There she was a grown woman (we all went down to the class taught by 3 Game Wardens, to support her) mixed in with a bunch of 12-14 YO's. We all had a great time.

They should also show real police photos of gun deaths..

Just like back in the day with Drivers Ed..

There's too much glorification of violence.. Children need to see and understand the difference between real life and a video game.

Awesome for Tennessee. I always had a rifle or shotgun in window rack of my truck in high school. Our FFA did orange sales every year, and the student with the most sales got “His” choice of a Marlin or Winchester 30-30. No background check required.
