Arizona congressional candidate Paul Babeu charged Monday that his ex-lover “Jose,” a 34-year-old Mexican national, “wanted to harm me,” suggesting just days after he revealed to the public he is gay that the recent allegations brought against him are politically motivated.

“Now this is national news, that I’ve had one [relationship] where he wanted to harm me,” Babeu said in an extensive interview with CNN’s Wolf Blitzer. “And now the timing of this is more than coincidence, that nationally, that all of this stuff, for years, all the media here in Arizona, all five TV stations, enemies of mine, people have gone through my chain of command in the military to report that I’m gay.”

In an explosive press conference over the weekend, the Pinal County sheriff denied charges that he had threatened his ex-lover with deportation after their relationship ended but did acknowledge that he is gay. The presser followed a story reported by the Phoenix New Times that included text messages the two men allegedly exchanged as well as pictures of Babeu posted on gay websites.

Jose — who is in the country legally — had been an unpaid volunteer for Babeu who managed social media and websites for his campaign. Babeu said Jose tweeted out pictures of him and posted “very negative things about me, posing as me.”

The Republican candidate for Arizona’s 4th Congressional District, who resigned as a co-chairman of Mitt Romney’s presidential campaign in the aftermath of the controversy, said this decision had nothing to do with whether the 2012 candidate would have a problem with him being gay.
