DEM'S MARINE MISFIRE

July 31, 2004 -- SCRANTON, Pa. — John Kerry's heavily hyped cross-country bus tour stumbled out of the blocks yesterday, as a group of Marines publicly dissed the Vietnam War hero in the middle of a crowded restaurant.

Kerry was treating running mate Sen. John Edwards and his wife, Elizabeth, to a Wendy's lunch in Newburgh, N.Y., for their 27th wedding anniversary — an Edwards family tradition — when the candidate approached four Marines and asked them questions.

The Marines — two in uniform and two off-duty — were polite but curt while chatting with Kerry, answering most of his questions with a "yes, sir" or "no, sir."

But they turned downright nasty after the Massachusetts senator thanked them "for their service" and left.

"He imposed on us and I disagree with him coming over here shaking our hands," one Marine said, adding, "I'm 100 percent against [him]."

A sergeant with 10 years of service under his belt said, "I speak for all of us. We think that we are doing the right thing in Iraq," before saying he is to be deployed there in a few weeks and is "eager" to go and serve.

The Marines — all of whom serve at nearby Stewart Air Force Base — wouldn't give their names.

It wasn't an auspicious start to the senators' "Believe in America" bus tour — a 22-state, 43-city tour that will cover roughly 3,500 miles over 15 days in an effort to carry some of their momentum out of the Democratic convention.

But the rest of Day One went smoothly, as massive crowds — including what Kerry said were up to 20,000 in Harrisburg, Pa., — greeted him, Edwards, their families and Ben Affleck at the tour-kickoff event in Boston and at two stops in the Keystone state.

"Ninety-seven days [left in the campaign]; let's make it happen," Kerry told hundreds of bleary-eyed but upbeat supporters who showed up at a 7:30 a.m. rally on the shores of Boston Harbor — less than nine hours after Kerry finished his acceptance speech.

Kerry also employed Paul Revere's famed midnight run and imagery of Bunker Hill to bash President Bush over U.S. intelligence failures.

"These are the places where people dared to stand up and put their lives on the line — to take a risk — for something they believed in very deeply," Kerry said of the Boston neighborhood where he was speaking.

"One if by land, two if by sea, and the message was right. Come to think of it, they had better intelligence than we do today about what's going on," Kerry continued, drawing the loudest applause of the event.

In Harrisburg, Kerry noted that there was more bad news coming out of the financial markets yesterday, with oil prices reaching new highs and economic growth limping along at three percent.

You can bet that most Vet's and active military do not forget his anti-war antics, let alone his miraculous acquisition of medals in the Nam. Believe me, you did not want to be under a cowboy like that. Ask his former crew.

John Kerry stepped straight from his coronation stage in Boston into a political firefight yesterday over his relentless use of fellow Vietnam veterans to bolster his campaign.

As the Democratic presidential candidate began the long march with his 'band of brothers' towards the November elections, he was ambushed by a second group of navy veterans who, like him, fought on Swift Boats on the Mekong Delta - but who dissent from Sen Kerry's own account of his war record.

Rear-Adml Roy Hoffmann, who ran the Swift Boat campaign, said: 'I do not believe that John Kerry is fit to be commander in chief of the armed forces of the United States. This is not a political issue. It is a matter of judgment, truthfulness, reliability, loyalty and trust - all absolute tenets of command.'

Adml Hoffman, who is now retired, leads a group of fellow officers calling themselves the 'Swift Boat Veterans for Truth', who will campaign in swing-vote states on behalf of President George W Bush.

A book written by John O'Neill, who took command of Mr Kerry's boat and crew when he left Vietnam after four months' service, will challenge the 'official' version of Mr Kerry's service in Vietnam - a centrepiece of last week's Democratic convention.

The book, Unfit for Command: Swift Boat Veterans Speak Out Against John Kerry, is to be published by the conservative publishing house Regnery in Washington within the next two weeks.

Mr O'Neill first encountered a shaggy-haired Kerry on June 30, 1971, when they were on opposite sides of a televised debate on the Vietnam war.

His publisher has refused to disclose the content of his book, but Matt Drudge, whose conservative-leaning website first broke news of President Bill Clinton's affair with Monica Lewinsky, claimed to have seen an advance copy.

He reported that it includes allegations that Mr Kerry's three Purple Hearts - awarded for combat wounds - 'were not sustained while under enemy fire'.

As Mr Kerry embarked on a coast-to-coast campaign in the wake of the Boston convention, aides denounced the dissident veterans' attack as a Republican campaign ploy.

'We have to expect this, but we believe that the American people will see the truth or John Kerry's record,' said a Kerry campaign spokesman.

Members of the candidate's 'band of brothers' reacted with fury as they left Boston to take their own endorsement of Mr Kerry onto the campaign trail.

'The negativism about John Kerry is complete bull,' said Steve Hatch, who served on his crew.

Del Sandusky, another crew member campaigning with Sen Kerry, said: 'We are all here because we love, honour and respect John Kerry.'

Mr Kerry was awarded a Silver Star combat medal for killing an enemy soldier threatening his boat with a rocket-propelled grenade, and a Bronze Star for rescuing James Rassman, a Green Beret, from the water while under fire.

After being wounded again and receiving a third Purple Heart, he ended his tour of duty early.

Veterans for Truth promised to field 200 'anti-Kerry' veterans in public meetings in the crucial battleground states, starting this week.

William Shumadine, a former Swift Boat officer, said the campaign was launched in anger after the Kerry campaign used a photograph of 20 Division 11 Swift Boat officers, taken at an airbase in 1969.

They felt it suggested that all those in the photograph supported him, when in fact many were bitter that he campaigned against the war once safely home.

Their enduring anger was mostly sparked by the young Mr Kerry's allegations after the war that US troops were involved in war crimes.

In Boston Mr Kerry sought to demonstrate that he would be as steadfast in America's war on terrorism as President Bush, while also having the wisdom of combat experience.

He arrived at the convention with four of his crewmates, all of whom testify to Mr Kerry's courage and clear-headed command. Mr Rassman, who appeared in Iowa during the crucial primary ballots to authenticate Mr Kerry's Bronze Star story of courage under fire, is also travelling with the 'band of brothers'.

Delegates at the convention - and millions of Americans watching on television - saw original video footage of Mr Kerry in Vietnam, combined with graphic battle scenes, as part of a nine-minute film biography produced with the help of Steven Spielberg.

But Mr O'Neill was quoted on the Drudge Report as claiming that Mr Kerry revisited ambush locations shortly after the event to re-enact combat scenes for the cameras - a claim fiercely denied by the Kerry campaign.

Earlier this year Mr O'Neill said: 'We don't understand why Kerry would make the centrepiece of his campaign an exaggerated account of his four months service in Vietnam 33 year ago, but since he is, we believe that the public is entitled to the truth about his service and his charges about war crimes and atrocities.'

The Kerry/Edwards ticket is campaigning by bus and train across the country, ending on the West Coast in Seattle.

Today, Mr Kerry will attend church services in an effort to appeal to religious-minded voters.

Maybe Kerry is unfit to be commander-in-chief...

but with Bush there is no doubt. Anyone who cons the American people into supporting an invasion of another country based on false information, then keeps changing his story after being caught, doesn't deserve to be dogcatcher, much less President.

And no, I'm not a Democrat. The last Democratic presidential candidate I voted for was George McGovern.

If I'm a liar, name a lie I have told. Note: opinions cannot be lies. They can be wrong, but they cannot be lies, as they are not statements purporting to be facts.

Was the real lunch choice Wendy’s or fine dine

What was being served inside the bus?

While Democratic presidential nominee John Kerry and his running mate, John Edwards, and their families were having a “lite” lunch at Wendy’s in the Town of Newburgh Friday, drumming up local support right after the national convention in Boston, their real lunches were waiting on their bus.

A member of the Kerry advance team called Nikola’s Restaurant at the Newburgh Yacht Club the night before and ordered 19 five-star lunches to go that would be picked up at noon Friday. Management at the restaurant, which is operated by CIA graduate chef Michael Dederick, was told the meals would be for the Kerry and Edwards families and actor Ben Affleck who was with them on the tour.

The gourmet meals to go included shrimp vindallo, grilled diver sea scallops, prosciutto, wrapped stuffed chicken, and steak salad. The meals came to about $200.

The entourage had also expected to stop at the Alexis Diner at Route 9W and North Plank Road in the Town of Newburgh. In fact, the Kerry advance team had ordered 125 lunches for the team and supporters. Their buses drove right by the diner on I-84 and proceeded straight to Wendy’s.

Kerry may still have the vote of Wendy’s manager John Garrett. “I’m for anyone who comes in and likes double cheeses”, Garrett said. “I’m a big supporter of anyone who orders our food.”
