ALERT Power outage

Dobbin

Faithful Steed
Seacoast Cow Hampshire started as snow overnight. We got perhaps two inches before it turned to rain.

It's rained most of the day - there is still a significant snow cover despite some torrents around 8 p.m.

I see out my window that the Chicken Wire around the garden is "glistening" in the light - every hex is covered in ice now. I'm not seeing Owner's "Pepsi Hits the Spot" thermometer, but Intellicast says it's 31 degrees.

This could be the setup for the conclusion of this storm for us - Ice-storm.

We still have power (Thanks Maker) and so far there are no reports of outages locally. But branches covered with ice do what branches do - it might be a long, dark, night.

Not happy...

Yup, that one was a doozy.

This one is caused by storms and massive flooding all over New England. I suppose the more into the mountains you go, the more snow and ice now. I'm at the coast, so warmer. I need a dingy right now to get around my back yard.

Wind with sheets of heavy rain, some areas with a possible ice storm, from what I'm hearing. Just the heavy wind and rain, here.

Several years ago, a snow storm on Halloween took out an enormous amount of trees surrounding the overhead power lines in this area. Electricity was out for 5 days here, several weeks in part of CT. There are now a lot fewer trees to do such damage.

Mesoscale Discussion 0289
NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK
0610 PM CDT Sat Mar 23 2024

Areas affected...portions of central Vermont and New Hampshire into
central Maine

Concerning...Heavy snow

Valid 232310Z - 240415Z

SUMMARY...Heavy snow should continue across northern parts of New
England into the evening hours. 1-2 inch/hr snowfall rates and
periods of reduced visibility are possible, especially after 00Z (8
PM EDT).

DISCUSSION...Heavy snow is ongoing to the north of a strong
low-level cyclone that is currently traversing the Atlantic
Coastline. Regional dual-polarimetric radar data depicts the
transition line between all snow and mixed wintry precipitation to
be established from roughly the MA/VT border to central Penobscot
County, ME, and the latest high-resolution model guidance suggests
that this transition line should remain roughly stationary into the
evening hours. 700 mb frontogenesis is increasing along the
international border in tandem with increasing low-level WAA, and
this should encourage increased snowfall rates as moisture and lift
are boosted within the dendritic growth zone. 1-2 inch/hr snowfall
rates are possible, especially later this evening (i.e. the 00-05Z
time frame).

Yup, that was a wonderful year. We were out for two weeks in that October, then we got hit with Hurricane Sandy that same year. Learned a lot about preps that year! First time ever that we cancelled Halloween for the kids.

We got lucky so far in our town in NH. We still have power, some aren’t so lucky. About 75k so far without power in our state. Had to hammer the ice off my chicken door just to let them out this morning.

We got 22-24 inches of snow here in the Lake George NY region today and never lost power. Thank the Lord. But 5 hours of snow clearing nearly killed me. Hell getting old..
You are not far from where my home was. Husbands family lives in Caroga Lake and surrounding area.

We had some of that storm the other night it rained for hours but the power stayed on.
As a kid living on the east end of Long Island and during the winter months we would have power outage often and some times last for 24 hours before the power company sent a crew out to fix it. A few times I remember power outage lasted two days and it got to the point the local school board started complaining as one the schools water pipes was freezing.

Where I live, power was out for 5 days. I didn't use my wood stove for several years, and found out that I had about a 7 day supply of wood. I made homemade chicken soup, heated it every day, for 5 days, on the wood stove, and cooled/stored it outside, buried in the snow that I accumulated. The world basically slowed down/stopped, and I enjoyed myself. The only thing that I missed? After 5 days of cleaning up the neighborhood, most neighbors pitching in to drag downed tree limbs to the street edge for city pick-up, I was wanting a hot shower, badly. I think that I learned how the homeless often feel, without bathing for a long time. It's sticky, itchy and gross.

Many people in the neighborhood left their homes to live with friends/family that had electricity. When they returned home, the 1st thing they did was clean out their fridges, and go shopping to refill it. The day after the electricity was back on, someone in the neighborhood crashed their car into a telephone pole, knocking the power out for two more days. The delay was because all of the local linemen were out of state, helping other states. The people who had just bought the new groceries emptied their fridges, and once again bought new ones to fill their fridges.

At that time I had a bit of extra funds and decided to take the kids to see the ocean in New Jersey. The day we were suppose to head back to Northern Ontario the power went out. We spent that down time watching from New Jersey that had power. All I could think at the time was....dam I am all prepped up for this and I am thousands of miles away...as I jumped back in to the swimming pool..lol

Drive back was long and drawn out as each gas station only allowed 10 or 15 in gas

That's all well and good if it's the time of year when you don't have to worry about the house freezing up and pipes bursting.

It stopped at Marshall, MI, sparing Flake City. We were blessed to have dodged that bullet.

Yep. It sucked. Everything was out, grocery stores, gas stations, businesses, etc. couldn’t get gas for generators if you ran out. Had some gas stored. Used it all up before it came back on. If you didn’t have a generator you were screwed.

Had to hookup rabbit ears to the tv as no internet. Detroit news channels had generators. So they worked. Lots of listening on battery powered radio. Can’t remember if cell was out as well.
