I guess I'll start us out again. Crappy sales again this week. A trip to Publix for me today and I only got 4 big cans of peanuts (a BOGO with coupons) and 2 cans of baked beans (on sale and coupons). I'll hit Walgreens tomorrow and get 16 bars of Zest soap (on sale and coupons).

That's it here. It's tax season and I've getting the hours and working hard, so I haven't had much energy when I finally make it home.

What is everyone else up to?

We decided to take the plunge and put in 100 3 year old blueberry bushes. It's part of our hedge against inflation to increase income and I love blueberries.

We spent the last 2 weeks getting the soil ready and the ph down to 5.0, the shoulders are not happy.

We've had some dings to the budget so my preps aren't money related. I borrowed a bunch of old photos from my Mom last time I was there and am scanning them and getting them put in my big genealogy file. It's been needing doing for a few years but requests from several family members asking me about stuff has pushed me to finally get this project going the direction it needs to go.

We are also doing our taxes. Had a lot more 1099s to send out this year and some have been returned to sender since they moved from the address listed on their W-9s. Now I get the fun task of trying to hunt this people down, assuming they are still even in this state. Gotta check what the law is if they moved without leaving a forwarding address.

Other than that and normal busy business stuff I am trying to inventory and make a list of holes that need to be filled. I did buy another case of evaporated milk from Aldi but I use it on a fairly regular basis so it isn't strange to keep a couple of cases at any given time.

Knee deep in snow here, so we have to go to the north pasture to feed cows every day. School was cancelled today due to road and weather conditions (I am so glad - DD 17 was up at 0400 working on her college stuff even though she felt awful). DH has been working on taxes, and I have ordered trees for putting in this spring. Just seems like I can never get enough fruit! I'd like to do blueberries, but our soil is just so alkaline that I'd be busy for a long time getting it acidified enough.

Put in paperwork to switch to day shift. I hate to leave nights, but my body is just getting too old for it. Physically, I need to be on days, but psychologically, I'll always be a night-shifter! Have to go to the big city about an hour away on Thurs and Fri for classes

We're still in extreme drought here so I keep putting off buying blueberry bushes and other bush fruits. We're on town water but the city is having well problems (dug 3 dry holes trying to get a new supply) and we're asked to conserve. Its really amazing the way all moisture seems to miss us even snow. We got only a couple inches yesterday which is more than usual. Most of the state is considered in drought but our particular area is more severe. All summer the rains went around us. We'd get a little here and there but not enough to move us out of drought. Last time we went to town I noticed drifts of dirt where it had blown from the bean fields. The corn fields aren't so bad because they leave the crop residue in place overwinter. Bean fields are like powder and blowing in the wind.

I'm still planning my garden for this summer. I will plant and then pray we get enough moisture to keep it going. I have sweet potatoes rooting in my kitchen window and have sorted seeds. I don't think I will buy any seeds this year unless they are on sale. I suffered sticker shock when I got my seed catalogs -- WOW the prices are ridiculous.

Seeds are pricey this year. I have been saving seeds from my French Green Chard if there was some way to get them to anyone without blowing your opsec. This is a wonderful chard from the old Seed Savers before their fire destroyed everything.
Anyway would be glad to send some to whoever wants them.
PM me if you want.

I am looking for Jerusalem artichoke tubers for this spring if anyone has some extra. Would be willing to barter or buy.

Terrwyn, that's a very nice offer; thank you!

Moldy, thank you for the kind words a week or so ago on the Prep thread - coming from you, being called frugal was a high complement!! I hear you on the body needing day shift - after 36 years of nights, I probably NEED to go to days, but I hate to give up the night shift/12 hour differential - and I've yet to find a cure for my allergy to neckties

I wasn't able to get 50# of the split chicken breasts to work up as both stores in my area ran out, but I did get a rain check for 20#, so will take advantage of it next time I see them at the store.

Stopped on our way home from the oral surgeon to pick up Hubby's scripts at CVS; had 10 minutes or so to wait so picked up:
* 1 tube Colgate toothpaste @ $3 $2.25 scanner coupon - 75 cent coupon = 21 tax out of pocket
* 1 pkg Pull-Ups on sale @ $8.99 - $2 coupon - $1.50/$5 baby purchase scanner coupon - $2 ECB from buying milk = $3.50

I also played at Walgreen's for a bit this week - Tuesday was Senior Day; AARP (boo-hiss!) members and people over 55 (sigh) got 20% off Walgreen's branded items and 15% off of other items, so - of course! - I waited until Tuesday to do my shopping!
* 4 - 6 pks Boost @ $8.29 each; buy one get one 50% off so 4/$24.88 - 4, $4 coupons ($16) - 15% Senior Discount ($3.75) = $5.13; or a little over $1.25 per 6pk. Hopefully this will be enough, along with the other I have in stock, to get Hubs through both series of extractions and the period of adapting to his new choppers
*9 - 6oz pk Butterball Turkey bacon @ $1.29 each so $11.61 - 9, 55 cent coupons ($4.95) - 15% ($1.74) = $4.92 or 54 cents a pkg - these will go to daughter as she really likes it
*2 - dozen eggs @ $1.29 each or $2.58 - 20% (52 cents) = $2.06 or $1.03/doz
*1 - 60 ct 10mg Melatonin @ $7; got a $7 Register Reward back
*2 - Well Beginnings (another Walgreen's brand) Pull-ups @ 2/$12 - $2/2 store coupon - 20% ($2.40) - $7 Register Reward = 60 cents out of pocket - I'll repeat the Melatonin and Pull-Up deal a few more times if they have the Melatonin in stock - Hubs uses it for sleep sometimes (me, I'm so tired when I go to bed that I usually sleep like the dead lol!)

Hit Catholic Charities on the way out of town and got 3 heavy fleece blankets for $3 each;; will add one to each vehicle since the boys are getting bigger; tuck the other back in storage.

Minimal decent sales at the grocery stores this week - since when is $4.59/lb a good price for chuck roast??! - but I have found a few things to stock up on - canned pineapple 20oz for 69 cents, Starkist tuna 5oz for 59 cents, Manwich $1/can; buy 3 get $1 off ground beef. I'll get a case of the Manwich (we use about 1/3 can or less for 1 pint ground beef, then freeze the rest, so this will be a couple of years worth at least), 12-18 tuna, and at least 3 cases of pineapple as the grandsons really like it.

Menard's has a weekend Fri/Sat/Sun special on seeds 20 pks/$1; I'll be going down there anyway to pick up a small safe ($69.99; get $30 rebate), so I'll get the seeds while I'm there. Looking at the ad, they look like they have at least some that are old, open pollinated varieties and lots of flowers, so I'll indulge myself :) While I'm in that town, I'll check out Kohl's and K-Mart for clearanced sheets (want flannels for the grandson's beds), and make a pass through Goodwill to look for white cotton knit shirts to wear under my scrubs. I'm death on white shirts, so refuse to pay new price for them!

Guess I'd better get out of my chair and go do something useful - like shovel out the mailbox! 9+" of snow, 20-25mph wind, and then the snowplow pushing drifted snow up in front of it means I'll get my workout in for sure!

Take care,

havent posted here in a few years lol
after keeping the doom under control I studied the economic news the last coupla weeks and decided to top off again.
DW has been battling the big C and I have limited my exposure to doom alot.

but know we better STAY ready.

50 lbs of sugar and salt and rice and beans.

we are inventorying the pantry and will plug holes accordingly.

gotta find the spread sheet , where its saved.

will fill the saved 2 ltr soda bottles with the beans and rice.
we use our old vinegar jugs for the salt. one of the DW's best ideas.
