Seed Rattlesnake beans + more

Have been trying to get to the desk top to do this for awhile. Anyway.....

Rattlesnake beans: ALL the seed I have found in the past few years is contaminated with a solid green pole bean that is tough even as a small bean. I have tried seed from several companies. One batch even had contamination from a cut short bean. That company admitted to commercial seed. Another who said they grew all their own was also contaminated. I do have some seed from Fedco and I will try it this year but I am not holding my breath. I will try to rogue out the contaminate if there aren't many plants.

Tough beans in general.....there is a gene which contaminates too many beans called the tough gene. The old line pole beans were supposed to be tender even with beans in them.

To find seed of such beans do a search for Applachian beans. You will find several sellers of a fascinating array of old time beans. More than any of us can ever try. These will mostly be tender until very beany.

Now for the +. For hardy varieties, esp various greens, take a look at Adaptive Seeds. A fairly new company that specializes in hardy varieties. They also have a selfed down variety of the hybrid pepper Gypsy that is very good.
