Republicans' new birth control platform not finding any fans in religious right

The religious right is not happy, not one bit, with the growing list of Republicans who are trying to blunt the edges of their War on Women with their embrace of an over-the-counter Pill. While these candidates recognize that they have to live in the 21st century to win a general election, their formerly staunch supporters feel betrayed, and pissed.

Watching Republican candidates push over-the-counter birth control has left some social conservatives fuming.

Some on the Religious Right see the plan as backtracking on conservative ideals, and they worry the ambiguity of the proposal would make pills too easy to access.

The strategy is also resulting in political fracturing, with some on the Religious Right feeling they have been marginalized more broadly by their party.

"Republicans have historically had an uncanny knack for doing whatever it takes to lose their numbers in the polls; this would be the latest," said [Connie Mackie, president of the Family Research Council Action Pact]. "It's a political strategy. They should stop shopping around for things that appeal to liberals and stick to their core beliefs of life, courage, religious liberty, defense, and economic reform.... [But] they get these political advisers or contractors that come in and give the wrong advice."

It's an interesting world in which they live. One where the 64 percent of sexually active women who use prescription birth control are perfectly willing to give it up. Where these women will all care a lot more about religious liberty, defense, and economic reform than the ability to actually decide when to have children. What an inconvenience for the religious right that women who prioritize self-determination vote, and so candidates—even Republican ones—have to at least recognize that fact.

The morning after pill has been shown by studies in Europe to not lower unplanned pregnancies or abortions. Simply because they don't work that well, but people think they do so they have more unplanned sex.

I'm sure if studies were done on them, that they would find that having easy access to the MAP, causes a great increase in STD's.

There is a war on women. It's be perpetrated by liberals and progressives.

First, this statement in the essay is patently wrong:

Republicans who are trying to blunt the edges of their War on Women with their embrace of an over-the-counter Pill.

There has never been a "Republican war on women". That is a campaign tactic promulgated by the democrats. Further, the source site "dailykos" is a mouthpiece for the democrat party. Additionally, I consider FJ to be either a paid or volunteer direct agent for the democrat party, posting material in furtherance of democrat campaign strategy.

All these things being what they are, I will not allow TB to be an outpost of the democrats. This thread is hereby move to POL.

I admit that piece that I quoted could be wrong, Here's Michelle Bachmann:

Michele Bachmann Says Gay Marriage Is 'Not An Issue,' 'Boring,' At Values Voter Summit
09/27/2014

Is even Michele Bachmann throwing in the towel on marriage equality?

For years, the GOP congresswoman from Minnesota has been a leader among Christian evangelicals and a vocal opponent of gay marriage. She not only supported a federal marriage amendment; she worked tirelessly as a state legislator in years past to get a an amendment on the ballot banning gay marriage in her home state's constitution. It finally got on the ballot in 2012 and was defeated. And then in 2013, Minnesota passed marriage equality.

Now Bachmann seems so disillusioned she’s got only one word for gay marriage: “Boring.”

Asked about gay marriage in an interview with me on SiriusXM Progress at the Values Voter Summit in Washington on Friday, Bachmann said, “It’s not an issue," before walking off and adding, “In fact, it’s boring.”

This seems consistent with what she told Meghan McCain two weeks ago in an interview: "I think that was an issue, yeah. I think it was in the last election and the previous election, but I think, you know, it's changing now.”

Asked his response to Bachmann’s comments, the American Family Association’s radio host Bryan Fischer, broadcasting from the Values Voter Summit, strongly disagreed.

"Well, I’d have to know more about what Representative Bachmann meant when she said that,” he responded. “The debate is far from settled. We’ve got a long way to go. Unfortunately, there are people in the conservative movement who have sort of given up. There are even evangelicals leaders sending signals that the battle is over, that the battle is lost. ‘We’ll never be able to capture the millennials. They’re gone.’ I think it’s way premature for that. You know, when the homosexual lobby was 0 and 31 [having lost at the ballot in 31 states on marriage], the gay lobby didn’t quit. They didn’t give up. They didn’t do it. They didn’t give up, and neither are we.”

So are we talking Plan B, or are we talking the month-by-month contraceptive plan? Rather a stark distinction, IMO.
