Royal Lunch Milk Crackers

I had Royal Lunch years ago when I lived in Rhode Island. Thicker, milder flavor than a Ritz...at least as best as I remember.

My references say hardtack is the same as ship's biscuits is the same as a beaten biscuit. Even though beaten biscuits are a Southern tradition, I've not knowingly had any of these, but do have recipes:

from Joy of Cooking

Ship's Biscuits

Preheat oven to 325

Mix: 2 cups all-purpose flour with 1/2 teaspoon salt
Work in with the fingertips: 1 teaspoon shortening
Stir in to make a very stiff dough: about 1/2 cup water

Beat this dough to a 1/2 inch thinness with a mallet. Fold it into 6 layers. Beat it thin again and refold 5 or 6 times until the dough is very elastic. Roll 1/2 inch thick again and cut with a floured biscuit cutter. Bake about 30 minutes and store tightly covered.

I've heard that it is easy to mix in a food processor, but not a mixer.
