Chapter 29
Back on board their boat, Sam and Irene, considered the possibilities. Sam was all for traveling the world. Irene was excited about the possibility of seeing places she had only dreamed about. The Chinese said nothing about the destruction of their HAARP arrays as to do so would only implicate them in a plot to control the weather. The Muslim states, likely the financiers of the plot, were also strangely silent. The Russians were impressed the United States had finally summoned enough testicular fortitude to do something. The two intrepid sailors decided there was no way they could not take the Navy up on their offer.
“First thing in the morning, we will tell the Captain of our decision”, said Sam as he turned off the cabin lights.
The last thing Irene saw before darkness overwhelmed them was a gleam in Sam’s eye.
Standing in front of the Captain, Sam explained their decision and after some paperwork was completed, the Captain explained in greater detail the role the Navy had in mind for Sam and Irene.
“First of all, let me thank you for doing this. You will remain Sam and Irene, there is no point in false identities. You are two newlyweds taking a couple of years off for a honeymoon. You source of funding is your inheritance, of course you will receive a stipend form Uncle Sam, to cover all your expenses as well as a salary. You boat will be retrofitted with some advanced electronics that we hope will be undetectable to scrutiny. We are going to lad you boat on a salvage vessel and deposit you close to the Strait of Gibraltar. You will sail into the Mediterranean Sea. Once there you will receive further instructions. Your primary mission will be to keep up with ship movement and, if possible, trends in military movements. We need to know of any unusual activity in the area. If you two are ready, we need to get under way. Sail out of the harbor and follow the motor launch to the salvage boat.” And just like that, Sam and Irene became spies and the meeting was over.
Sam and Irene left the Captains office and prepared to sail out to the salvage boat. Once they arrived at the designated location, the salvage boat began to slowly flood the twin hulls and as the platform connecting the two hulls sank below the surface, Sam’s boat was guided onto the platform. The keel and rudder were carefully guided into the slot provided and once the sailboat was secured, massive pumps removed the water from the twin hulls of the salvage ship. Sam and Irene were shown to their quarters while the work began on the sailboat.
