Paul Yeager: This week, organizers of the Minnesota Ice Festival canceled their 2024 event as uncharacteristically warm conditions remain in the forecast. Drastically different weather conditions are in place for both coasts and everywhere else in between. John Torpy has our weather wrap.

John Torpy: The East Coast led off the week with a wind swept mess that took at least five lives.

Almost five inches of rain fell on the Atlantic Coast from Massachusetts to Maine. At Cape Neddick, Maine wind blew high waves into structures along the shore. Emergency workers were sent out in the elements to clear roadways of downed power lines and other debris.

More than 30,000 were without electricity in the impacted area as trees fell on power lines. Wind gusts topped 60 miles per hour along the Atlantic shoreline as flood warnings were issued for sections of Pennsylvania and New York City.

On the other side of the country, California is experiencing rain and bracing for more this weekend. Flood warnings have been issued from San Diego to the Central Coast region. Flooding and mudslides are expected from the Pacific storm as millions prepare to travel for the holidays.

Despite all the rain, a lack of moisture remains a problem in the non-coastal areas of the country. Much of the nation’s midsection is locked in extreme and exceptional categories of drought. More than 50 percent of the U.S. has been suffering in some form of drought since mid-July.

Many of the same areas are also low on snow. The latest snapshot reveals depths well below average in North Dakota and Minnesota. The mountain west also is seeing limited snow cover as is a stretch from Virginia to the Great Lakes.

For Market to Market, I’m John Torpy.

It is raining here in central Iowa, best Christmas present ever! We are still in severe to almost extreme drought conditions so this rain is very much needed!

It's the same for us here in North MS. We are on the borderline between extreme and exceptional drought conditions. We were supposed to get rain and thunderstorms today, but they never developed.

People are saying online that Crawford county Iowa is now getting ice setting up on the trees and power lines, and that it's pretty thick. I guess this is what happens when you have a warm winter... ice storms.

S National Weather Service Des Moines Iowa

While roads are wet in Crawford County, the Iowa Department of Transportation webcam south of Denison appears to show icing on elevated surfaces such as these trees and perhaps the powerlines.

Same here in NW Iowa. Temps are to drop below freezing around 1 a.m. but the rain seems to have stopped at least for now and not showing any in forecast through tomorrow. (And we all know the forecasts are always correct right?? lol)

We got a lot of rain in the last two weeks if it were all snow we may have a total of three feet of it.
The rain has stopped we are soaked heavy ground fog at this time temp is 42F.
Much talk by forecasters of a cold front that starts moving in by January first of 2024 will effect most of the eastern half of the country how cold it will get has yet to be seen.
