Knitting Shawlette

I couldn't resist following the "Shawlette" notice that came up when I looked to see what the last posting was. I thought someone was posting about a woman as it sort of sounds like a woman's name. Had a bit of searching to find this thread. I think this is the first time I've been in this forum!

Clicking on this thread has given me a new place to check out on TB. There are so many places to explore, and I'm sorry to say that I've only touched a few due to time and "life." But I'll be back again!

This shawlette is just beautiful!! Gorgeous!! And so intricate! I've made doilies before, but nothing like this style and size. It's hard enough to crochet a doily much less something bigger!! So I really admire your patience and persistence. Your work well rewarded your time and effort. My deepest admiration and congratulations to you!!!

Looks like a pattern I might have saved to do "later". Sigh. I want to knit, but right now, other things take priority.

Lace Knitting is not that difficult. It uses the same YO and basic stitches most of us are used to. You just have to keep your head in that complicated pattern. Stitch markers and a stitch counter help. Getting to a proper stopping place and not wondering what row you are on when you pick the work back up is key.

Lovely work, BA- you inspire me.

I'm asking $250.00 for it.
Worth every penny! I'd get it if I had a granddaughter getting married. My granddaughter is only in 7th grade, and she'll probably go to college and get married after age 30 like her mom did.

Your shawlette would be a lovely piece to wear for a wedding! I made a shawl for our daughter for her wedding. She really needed it as she got married in late May in northern Minnesota. Could be nice? Or could have cold winds off the lake. She got married right on the lakeshore and it was COLD!! And she had a sleeveless wedding dress. She REALLY needed mama's shawl!! LOL!!

Stunning is the word, and it is worth every penny. Because it is handspun (and carded and washed), it is worth much more than it is sold for. Sadly, most craftspeople never get the price of anything they make. There are exceptions, but they are rare. The public doesn't understand the many hours of work that go into it.

I remember how shocked Nightwolf was when he realized how much I made per hour selling tablet weaving in the 2000s. If I had charged correctly for my time, almost no one would buy it. I got my money's worth out of a movie studio supply company that was under a deadline, but that involved weaving so quickly that I ended up hurting my shoulder and retiring from production weaving. Now, I make stuff for my friends and sometimes sell bits below labor costs to help people in my SCA group access good trim for their period clothing.

One new member suggested I sell them for 20 Euros a piece instead of what I was charging, and I said, "I was selling them for 20 Euros a piece in the year 2000. I can assure you my materials costs have gone up since then."

That's very beautiful. Displaced hillbilly, I didn't learn to knit until my older daughters were in their teens and we learned together. There are any number of youtube videos if you can't find a teacher locally.

Here's a website that lists teachers according to geographic area. Knitting | Search for Private Language & Music Teachers Near You

My first project was a pair of socks because the teacher thought that it covered a lot of different techniques.

Melodi, I used to make clothing suited to the American Civil War and sell them...it's been over 20 years and I hadn't realized how much the prices have increased.

I went to a show over the weekend and got some serious sticker shock, but then I realized that the prices still don't reflect the amount of time people spend or the cost of materials in some cases.

Although $50.00 for a chemise is a bit much since it was machine stitched. I can whip a chemise up in less than an hour start to finish if I sew everything by machine.

How beautiful!
My grandma was a knitter but I never picked it up from her.
I still have a few of her blankets as well as my baby blanket.
But I love that airy lacy style you do. It’s just an amazing piece of work.

THAT is a GORGEOUS piece!!!

And the price is ridiculously low! May your purchaser understand what they are buying.
Sadly, they never do. I don't think it will sell at this price either. I've had another shawl for sale for 9 months and not one person contacted me about it. With the economy the way it is, things like these are not a necessity and folks can't afford it as a luxury
