Safety Shipping Container

Been looking into getting a shipping container for safe storage. I've gotten prices and shipping prices so I know what I'm looking at in that area. A 40' shipping container plus delivery is around $3,000. I could do this before I move me to the woods. By putting all my stuff in the shipping container and blocking up a camper and taking off the wheels, I feel I could go visit my grandchildren from time to time and not have to worry too much. Everything that I own would fit in a 40' container, except me, I don't think I would want to live in it.

I have seen them go for less than that, like $1000 delivered and you own at that point and the reason they're selling is because it has a weak spot in it or to old and can longer be safely lifted with a full load in it, but its just fine for a storage box. I have seen a few people take them and convert them into a temporary home or get away.

I've found one company that has several locations to deliver from; Dallas is where they would send one to me. The delivery charge is $1,000 for either a 20' or a 40'. The 40' would run around $1,800 and the condition would be good. I would rather pay for the container and get something in decent condition than get one for little or nothing in poor condition. Potentially this would need to last me for several years to keep things secure. I could go to Dallas to inspect a container before purchasing.

From what I've read, a shipping container can be converted into a liveable structure. I'd think you'd want to bury most of it though, to aid with heating and cooling.

People do convert them, but I really don't want to do that, I just need secure storage.

I looked into them a few years ago, Like you, for storage. I found a reputable dealer in Houston, who explained the main question to ask was, has it ever had insecticide used inside for product protection during shipping. Some poisons used overseas are much stronger than allowed here, and is hard to get rid of. He did show me one.. the smell gave it away quickly.

Look for a bleached looking floor, as they're supposed to steam clean the wood floor before sale. If it's all steel and not rusted, so much the better.

Thanks, this is good to know. Did you get one and if not, why?

I bought one and it's still in my yard but I will never use it to store items that cannot withstand extreme heat and condensation again. The items I stored in it post Rita were destroyed. It needs a ventilation system. When we opened it water was literally cascading down the walls of the interior from the condensation. These are airtight. I paid about a grand, of course this was when they were in high demand following the cane. I bought it locally.

That's depressing that condensation builds up. Maybe I might need to reconsider because if you get condensation in your area then 30 miles north of Natchitoches would probably get it too. Now I'll have to go back to the drawing board about having secure storage.

Thanks for the heads up. I think I'll put a post on the main and see if anyone else has used one or has any ideas for secure storage.

No, I had to pass on it, ended up building a storeroom. We were in a wet spell when I needed one. The haul company said I had to pay for any wrecker service if they got stuck... since I wanted it about 400' off the road, kinda put a stop to the idea. I toyed with the idea of renting a trac-hoe to move it in from the road, but that was about as expensive as having a wrecker.

Many times my wants & pocketbook just don't jive. :)

I know about wants vs pocketbook. LOL

I would like to get my shipping container at the time I am moving to my land, but I'll have to keep an eye on the weather too. I just can't add this to my list of worries, I give the weather situation to the Lord, and pray I don't try to take it back so I can worry.

Did you see the nice thread I started on the main about shipping containers. so many more good ideas there.
