The soldier returned from the West African country for a non-medical emergency
and was self-monitoring for possible Ebola virus symptoms, according to Fort Hood
officials. Up until the soldier's death this morning, there was no indication of
symptoms.

As a precautionary measure, Killeen Police Department is investigating
the soldier's death.

This story will be updated as more information becomes available.

Fort Hood officials and Hazmat crews are on site in Killeen after a US soldier, who
recently returned from West Africa, was found dead outside his home. So far
there are no answers as to why the soldier was not in quarantine and no known
cause of death...

Statement from KPD: Victim had recently returned from w. Africa.
Cause of death unknown. Body taken to Dallas for autopsy.

As WFAA reports,
Killeen police and Fort Hood military police currently have a
home blocked off on the 3300 block of Cantebrian Drive where a
man was found dead in a yard Tuesday morning.

Fort Hood officials confirm the man is a soldier who recently returned
from a deployment to West Africa. Officials say there are no
indications the soldier had Ebola, however medical personnel at Carl
R. Darnall Medical Center are running tests as a precaution to make sure
there is no threat to the community.

Troops returning from West Africa must undergo a 21-day monitoring
period at a controlled monitoring site on post. Officials say this soldier
was granted an emergency leave - not medical related - and was
under self-monitoring where he had to check in with officials
twice a day.

Wish I knew more about the reason for the leave, and why he was self monitoring; obviously authorities thought there was a chance he could have become infected with Ebola.

I don't think TPTB will disclose he had ebola if he died from the disease, don't want to get us peons more upset at Barry. More likely they will say suicide or something like that.

Yup - prolly just another case of African Flu...:screw:

All of the soldiers returning are doing the 21-day temp monitoring routine. All of them. As a precaution.
But yeah, one wonders what emergency brought this soldier home and if perhaps, that had a lot more to do with cause of death.

He was self-monitoring as a precaution, since he had just left a known country where there were many Ebola Hot Zones. If they thought he had actually been exposed, they probably wouldn't have let him stay at his own house; they just wanted him to check in on the off chance that he god exposed to the disease in a non-"hot" area. Non-medical emergency usually means a family problem (relative died, wife/child in hospital, etc).

I'm starting to think that the soldier 'may' have had a suspicion that he was infected and wanted to be home in case he really did have it instead of marinating away in his own juices in Africa.

Just a strong thought that hit me as I think that if he had it over there, they wouldn't let him come back here to hopefully recover but deal with it over there in some tent. V

I'm shocked that this story saw the light of day. Really.

So am I, they must have felt it needed to be reported when too many people he knew, already knew about he had passed away and where he'd just been. Keeps the rumor mill from grinding away. V

Call it whatever, it amount to the same thing. Manipulating the story so the dominant perception is the guy collapsed in his yard from exertion/stroke/overeating/anything other than Ebola. Push it hard and fast, so the public burns out on it quickly and moves on to something else. They'll be sure to discount the possibility of Ebola long enough for the story to die.

Ayup

For him to come home on an "emergency" timeframe, he had to skip the normal quarantine period those guys are getting before they are cut loose in the CONUS. The self monitoring was a precaution.

I'm thinking there is a better chance that it is a suicide.

I find it interesting that they changed the autopsy location from Dallas to the Army medical center at Ford Hood. I suppose you can "command" someone to silence-if it was EVD.

He was only 24..

Isn't it a shorter trip to Hood from Killeen to Hood??
Honest question since I ain't THAT familiar with the other side of town.

Doubt it was Ebola related. Found outside suggests he either had a heart attack, ruptured aneurysm, or similar quick death. That's once they rule out suicide.

Anyone far enough along with Ebola for it to kill him is not going to be able to walk around in his yard. He would be bed fast and likely even comatose.

Not totally true, based on some of the reports out of W. Africa that I've and others here have read. Some victims were about to escape hospitals/holding facilities and walk around only to later die that same day.

Millwright has a good point. Emergency leave raises lots of red flags, suggests a high-stress situation. Ebola is not the cleanest shave with Ockham's Razor in this particular case, though we can't rule it out. Wait for data, possibly not forthcoming.

A little MORE information...The soldier was BLACK, and i was stationed at Ft Hood and lived in Killeen, which is just outside the Ft Hood GATE. TAKING HIM THERE WAS UNDERSTANDABLE. Dallas is a hell of of a way further, and CAUSE of death SHOULD BE ESTABLISHED BEFORE TRANSPORTING HIM THAT FAR AWAY.

I AM SURE they are NOT THAT STUPID to have picked up the dead body without wearing ANY protective gear at all (as shown in the photos) UNLESS there was plainly something, of which we are not being told, that made it obvious he died from something other than ebola!
UPDATE (2:50 p.m.): In a statement, a Killeen police spokeswoman, Carroll Smith, said officers were called to the soldier's home at 8:06 a.m., where he was found face down in front of the home.

Justice of the Peace Bill Cooke pronounced the man dead at 8:26 a.m. and ordered an autopsy to be performed. The body was taken to Fort Hood's Carl R. Darnall Army Medical Center to run a test for Ebola, and results of that test should be available by the end of the day, Smith said.

"Because of the circumstances surrounding this death, the Killeen Police Department felt it was better to err on the side of caution in the interest of public safety," she said.

The name of the deceased is being withheld, pending notification of his family.

Killeen police are investigating the death of a Fort Hood soldier, who was found dead at his Killeen residence while on emergency leave from Liberia.

The soldier, identified as a 24-year-old black male, returned from the West African country for a non-medical emergency and was self-monitoring for possible Ebola virus symptoms, according to Fort Hood officials.

He was found dead face down in his front yard about 8 this morning. He lived in the 3300 block of Cantabrian Drive, where a hazmat team was on the scene.

Up until the soldier's death this morning, there was no indication of symptoms, Fort Hood officials said.

The body was found in the front yard of the residence, officials said. An autopsy has been ordered by Justice of the Peace Bill Cooke.

As a precautionary measure, Killeen Police Department is investigating the soldier's death.

Yeah...but he came back with 80 other people. He got in Jan 7th...so he could have JUST started having serious issues. However, the official verdict as of 540p is ...nobola
