A surgeon who contracted the Ebola virus while working in Sierra Leone died at a Nebraska hospital where he was transported for treatment, the facility said Monday.

A statement released Monday by Nebraska Medical Center said Dr. Martin Salia "has passed away as a result of the advanced symptoms of the disease."

"Dr. Salia was extremely critical when he arrived here, and unfortunately, despite out best efforts, we weren't able to save him," said Dr. Phil Smith, medical director of the biocontainment unit.

Salia, 44, was being treated in the medical center's biocontainment unit. He arrived Saturday by plane from West Africa, and was transported by ambulance for treatment at the hospital, where two other Ebola patients have been successfully treated. Officials said Salia might be more ill than the first Ebola patients treated successfully in the United States. On Sunday officials had described his condition as "an hour-by-hour situation."

Salia's ambulance to the hospital was accompanied by a single Nebraska State Patrol cruiser and a fire department vehicle -- a subdued arrival in contrast to the August delivery of Dr. Rick Sacra, whose ambulance was flanked by numerous police cars, motorcycles and fire vehicles.

Salia has been working as a general surgeon at Kissy United Methodist Hospital in the Sierra Leone capital of Freetown. It's not clear whether he was involved in the care of Ebola patients. Kissy is not an Ebola treatment unit, but Salia worked in at least three other facilities, United Methodist News said, citing health ministry sources.

Salia, a Sierra Leone citizen who lives in Maryland, first showed Ebola symptoms on Nov. 6 but tested negative for the virus. He eventually tested positive on Monday.

The U.S. State Department said it helped facilitate the transfer of Salia; the U.S. Embassy in Freetown said he paid for the expensive evacuation. The travel costs and care of other Ebola patients flown to the U.S. have been covered by the groups they worked for in West Africa.

Salia and his wife, Isatu Salia, have two children, ages 12 and 20. Isatu said in a telephone interview that she spoke to her husband early Friday and his voice sounded weak and shaky. But he told her "I love you" in a steady voice, she said.

Ebola has killed more than 5,000 people in West Africa, mostly in Liberia, Guinea and Sierra Leone.

Martin Salia was on dialysis, a ventilator and multiple medications after suffering from kidney and respiratory failure, the hospital said in a statement. He also got a dose of plasma from an Ebola survivor and Mapp Biopharmaceutical's ZMapp drug.

I'm just glad we could bring the doctor and his disease back to the United States to share with the rest of us.

What don't we start mandating Leper colonies need to be assimilated into every neighborhood, leper equality and all.

This like the other medical evacuations from Africa was in many respects a treatment protocol evaluation and disease course research on the disease in an infected person.

I wouldn't be at all surprised if, despite the risks, they perform a full autopsy on this deceased doctor to confirm the extent of organ damage and anything else they can learn from him.

We are. They're the "unaccompanied chiiiilllldrruuuunn" from whatever South American hell-hole they're flooding up from. The Osama administration sent them all over the country, without alerting localities to that fact.

The report says "an American surgeon" has died. I though he was not American, but a legal resident married to an American. I guess everybody is American these days, except the gun-owners, christians and tea party.

I'm guessing he was too far into late stage for zmapp and transfusions to help. Either that, or what the 2 Dallas nurses had wasn't the real thing. Guessing also that they'll have to incinerate the dialysis machine. Bet that would be real hard to autoclave.

He displayed symptoms but initially tested negative for Ebola. It wasn't until his symptoms progressed that a second test showed positive. That is the most concerning thing about this particular case. It appears that for some patients, there is a narrow window to test and get an accurate determination as to whether a patient has Ebola or not.

This can lead to more "Duncans", especially when kids go home to west Africa for Christmas from universities all across the US and return sometime in January at the height of Flu season.

All the tubing and filters are disposable these days. No body fluids ever touch the equipment.

It seems like there is a higher percentage of fatalities with the black ebola victims than non black?

Granted, there are many variables that contribute to this, but at some point Jackson and his types will start screaming that ebola was designed to target blacks.

Oreally

Right from the start
Also note here is that he was a general surgeon and wasn't specifically tasked to treat ebola patients. despite what i just heard the propaganda babe on nbc offhandedly state.

My hunch is (from seeing differing reports) is that he was a US Resident, possibly married to a US Citizen and at the very least the parent of two US Citizen children; this is a grey area and while I am not in favor of just bringing people in wholesale from Africa, I can also see why they might have decided to "count" him as an American in terms of treatment. It does show however, that early treatment for this disease does seem to be vital; treatment that probably includes a combination of the transfusions, Z-Map and full life support systems when required; that just isn't going to be available to most people if a larger epidemic gets going, which hopefully it won't.

Really think it will be reported? Seems not much Ebola News in the Main Stream Media any more.

Correct. The MSM sources have all been locked down tight by order of the Obola administration. You'll never hear another meaningful word on Ebola, ever. Even to save your life.

How long till we hear that more could have been done for him??

How long before we hear that he was black and discriminated against. How long before we hear that only white doctors and nurses get better care than the black physician and Mr. Duncan? So far only whites have survived the disease here in the US.

The news is saying he had no kidney function and was unresponsive, he went into cardiac arrest and died at 4am. Why did they bring him here if he was already circling the drain

As previously stated on TB2K (I forget the OP), since the majority of care associated with Ebola victims is palliative in nature, it makes little sense for groups like Doctors Without Borders to send critical staff in harms way. I have a recent positive experience with a medical specialist via a virtual presence medical device. Now THAT would be logical technology for aid groups to invest in. Certainly far cheaper than the millions of dollars it takes to transport and treat infected HCWs.

Unfortunately true :shk:
I am so tired of looking at an upside down world these days.

Wouldn't that be cool :)

However I think it is all coming down to how early you start treatment.
Wait too long and you die.
