During a recent trip through very rural areas along the Ohio River, I tested wi-fi access. Not the kind you pay for (like web surfing on your phone), but where you might find free wi-fi on the road. It was surprisingly simple. I found it near a library (in the parking lot), under a shady tree in a car outside businesses, and, of course, in a library (free when given access code from librarian). I found it everywhere, really. This is not something you would necessarily have to pay for. There are many unsecured wireless spots. I didn't even have to go in a coffee shop to use wi-fi.
I was using an iPod Touch.
