A 13 year old girl was attacked in school after presenting her history assignment, which was to make a protest sign for or against an issue, and she chose Illegal Immigration as her issue.
Melanie Bowers, 13, participated in a history assignment handed out by her teacher, which was to create a sign for or against any issue.

She chose the issue of illegal immigration and created a sign that said, "If you love our nation, stop illegal immigration."

According to Melanie that sign somehow got passed around during the lunch break and angered some Latino students, one of which jumped on her back and put her in a choke hold and then slammed her face into the brick wall.

She also alleges that a group of boys threatened to rape and kill her.

After Melanie the incident to school officials what had occurred, they ordered her back to class, and told her could not call her parents.

Her parents deem this unacceptable, saying, "They handled this wrong, you know, they put a child back in danger. It was a very racially motivated crime."

After the incident, Mr. Bowers said his daughter told him she attempted to use an office phone to call him. Hayes said Assistant Principal Mark Castleberry looked her over and “did not see anything wrong with her.” Castleberry did not allow her to use the phone, and she eventually used her cell phone to inform her parents she had been attacked.

A statement issued from the Athens Independent School District, the school in which this attack happened, given to KLTV 7, they confirm that an incident happened, saying, "We have a camera system in the building. We are collecting other information and statements from witnesses and this is all the information we have at this time."

J.R. Bowers, Melanie's father, told reporters, "It never should have happened in the first place. The whole assignment was a silly assignment and they should have contacted us immediately after it happened," he concludes with, "I won't be happy until the kids that did this are out of school."

In an interview given to the Associated Press, Mr. Bowers says they are keeping their daughter out of school because they are scared for her safety.

Police are reviewing security video from Athens Middle School.

I hope the family sues the pants off the school district.

In this day and age of "zero tolerance" for violence, the school administrator's inaction comes off as approval of the attack.

Schoolgirl pummeled for anti-illegals sign
Claims Hispanic attackers threatened rape, death in response to class project

A 13-year-old East Texas girl claims 21 classmates attacked and beat her in response to a sign she made for a history class calling for an end to illegal immigration.

Melanie Bowers was among the eighth graders at Athens Middle School asked by history teacher Janet Skelton to make "protest signs" that dealt with a past issue and a current one, the Athens Daily Review reported.

Bowers' sign read: "If you love your nation, stop illegal immigration."

Friday, according to her father, J.R. Bowers, a group of students attacked her in a school hallway, slamming her head into a brick wall and scraping her face down the side of the wall, the Athens paper said.

The students then attempted to drag the girl into a restroom and threatened to "rape and kill" her, said her grandmother, Layne Wilhoite. The sign was torn up, according to her mother, Shera Bowers.

The 13-year-old later told Dallas/Fort Worth Fox TV affiliate KDFW she was not sexually assaulted but was punched, scratched and stabbed with a pen.

"They picked me up, and they tried to put me in the boys' bathroom, and they said they were about to rape me," she said. "And I just started screaming and yelling, and I was, like, 'Leave me alone! Leave me alone! Leave me alone!'"

KDFW reported three Hispanic students are serving "in-school suspensions," and school officials are considering punishing two other students. The case is now in the hands of the school district's police department to determine whether criminal charges will be filed.

J.R. Bowers said Melanie suffered scrapes and bruises and sought medical attention. He plans to keep his daughter out of school until the situation is resolved.

Melanie Bowers told KDFW flyers titled "brown pride," with her face crossed out, were passed out at school.

Her parents have contacted the FBI and want to open a federal hate crimes investigation, the TV station said.:applaud:

"She's upset, first and foremost, because she didn't feel like she had any reason to be attacked," J.R. Bowers told the Associated Press. "She loves going to school. We're having to keep her out because we're scared for her."

Superintendent Fred Hayes

Meanwhile, police are reviewing security video, and Superintendent Fred Hayes said the investigation continues. But he already has concluded the class project was not a good idea.

"Should we deal with illegal immigration? Absolutely," he told KDFW. "But not at a 13- and 14-year student level."

After the attack, said J.R. Bowers, his daughter tried to use the school office to call him, but Assistant Principal Mark Castleberry would not allow it, arguing it would "mess up the investigation."

Hayes acknowledged Castleberry should have let Bowers make the phone call, but he said the assistant principal looked over Melanie Bowers and "did not see anything wrong with her," the Athens Daily Review reported.

Shera Bowers, however, said her daughter was checked out by a paramedic Saturday, suffering a swollen face, various scratches and bruises.

"I'm upset that this happened to my daughter, and that she wasn't allowed to call us," she said.

J.R. Bowers said his daughter identified 21 students involved in the attack – 17 boys and four girls – by using a yearbook, the Athens paper reported.

Principal Louis DeRosa and Hayes acknowledge there was an incident, but they stopped short of saying the girl was assaulted. DeRosa says only a few students were involved.

"There was an incident in the hallway after lunch on Friday, April 4, between two or three students," DeRosa said in a statement. "We have a camera system in the building. We are collecting information and statements from witnesses. This is all the information we have at this time."

I didn't know there were that many people in Athens much less that many Mexicans. They must have opened up a chicken plant or something like that up there.

Anyway if that's not a hate crime, I'd sure as hell like to know what is. If she was slammed into a brick wall face first, how on earth did she appear ok to the ass. principle? Plus physical assault aside, the threat of rape should have been enough to warrant some type of action on the part of the ASS. priniciple.

It's amazing that illegal immigration would be such a hot button issue for 13 year old hispanic kids. I remember back during our little Mexican parades a while back, it was only middle school mexicans that took part in it here. The high schoolers said no way jose. They had too much at stake to act stupid, athletics mainly. There were about fifty little mexican middle schoolers and one stupid little white girl who just got up and left campus with teachers, principles, janitors whomever, taking off after them yelling for them to come back. Finally when they were off school property, the police and mayor had to take over. Their mexican flag was confinscated. The mayor had a blow horn yelling at them the whole time telling them if a free quality education was not what they wanted to keep walking south. They made it ten miles to the next town. The superintendent fined their parents $500 for the disturbance. I think some liberal scum not from here said it was unfair or some type BS so the fine was dropped.

I've always heard that SPIC means Spanish Power In Control. I went to college in Southern Cali (also dated several mexi girls, penchant for dark hair/fiery latinas), I've heard this said a few times, is it true?

What Echo 5 said!

Wait until 2035 when they have a voting plurality in the SW states and "vote" themselves out of the US.

Can you say Civil War TWO?

It is coming folks. We have 30 million foreign born CITIZENS. 1:10. Many from countries which are not Republics. Add in 15 million illegals and their offspring and imagine what is to come.

Melanie Bowers with her 'protest sign'
A 13-year-old East Texas girl who claimed Hispanic schoolmates attacked and beat her in response to an anti-illegals sign she made for a history class now has been accused of filing a false report.

The parents of Melanie Bowers, a student at Athens Middle School in Athens, about 70 miles southwest of Dallas, reportedly have apologized to school administrators, according to KTLV-TV in Tyler, Texas.

Fred Hayes, superintendent of the Athens Independent School District, which filed the charges against Bowers, said three boys did rip the sign out of the girl's hand, reported KDFW-TV in Dallas.

But a review of school surveillance video showed Bowers injuring herself, scratching her arms and face.
Along with pursuing charges against Bowers, the boys also will be punished, Hayes said.

The parents have signed a letter of apology for the false accusations, according to the superintendent.

Melanie Bowers, an eighth grader, was among the students asked by history teacher Janet Skelton last week to make "protest signs" that dealt with a past issue and a current one.

Bowers' sign read: "If you love your nation, stop illegal immigration."

She claimed that Friday a group of students attacked her in a school hallway, slamming her head into a brick wall and scraping her face down the side of the wall.

The students, she said, then attempted to drag her into a boy's restroom, threatened to "rape and kill" her, then tore up the sign.

The 13-year-old previously told KDFW she was not sexually assaulted but was punched, scratched and stabbed with a pen.

"They picked me up, and they tried to put me in the boys' bathroom, and they said they were about to rape me," she said. "And I just started screaming and yelling, and I was, like, 'Leave me alone! Leave me alone! Leave me alone!'"

KDFW reported three Hispanic students were serving "in-school suspensions," and school officials were considering punishing two other students.

Melanie Bowers had told KDFW that flyers titled "brown pride," with her face crossed out, were passed out at school.

Her parents contacted the FBI and wanted to open a federal hate crimes investigation, the TV station said.

"She's upset, first and foremost, because she didn't feel like she had any reason to be attacked," J.R. Bowers told the Associated Press. "She loves going to school. We're having to keep her out because we're scared for her."

J.R. Bowers said his daughter identified 21 students involved in the attack – 17 boys and four girls – by using a yearbook.

Well, looks like I wasn't too far off now that they have filed charges against the girl.

It says her parents signed a letter of apology instead of her parents wrote a letter of apology. It almost sounds like they really signed a confession.

I don't see why the parents should have to write or sign an apology at all!! They didn't do anything wrong. They only followed through on what their girl told them and acted accordingly. If thy do make a statement about the only thing the parents should say is how long and how tough her punishment will be after the school gets done with her!!!

It must have been traumatic to have the sign torn from her and who knows what the 3 boys said to her but what disturbs me how this 8th grader quickly thought up such a devious ruse to get them punished along with 18 other students she probably didn't like. After her grounding sure hope they get her some counciling. She's starting the life of a con early.

At my high school (1974-1978), black students harassed and threatened the white and hispanic students, blocking hallways and stairwells, and beating up girls in the bathrooms. A black, male PE teacher known for having sex with students on school grounds sexually harassed me. The black principal and administrators knew full well what was going on. In the four years that I was there, none of these wrongs was ever publicly addressed.

I have no doubt that dozens of the kids at this girl's school deserve to be expelled and/or prosecuted.

"The parents have signed a letter of apology for the false accusations, according to the superintendent."

The parents are responsible for their child until she's 18. And their daughter may be in a whole ****load of trouble right now. I imagine they are trying to "fix" some of it by being helpful and apologetic for their daughters behavior.

Sounds like 2 hate crimes are going on here, First you have the latin kids rip the sign away and proceeded to proablly call her racist names. maybe called her "typical white" (we can thank Obama for that one:rolleyes: )and if they threaten to rape her, then THAT needs to be care of.. Second, we have the girl, If the WND article is correct, who injures herself... :shr: sounds like she used the issue to incite some people....and was showing some racist additude thats coming form the homestead :shr: Either way, i,m sad....We have allowed the politicans to ignore thier duty and resolved this issue.....Now we have the Big 3 McPain, Hiltery, and Berry that are going to give amninsty to the 20/30 million illegals, you can bet the farm on that one.........And i sure, some here on the board will blame the No working, stinky, nasty looking illegals for getting amnesty. BUT sooner or later SOONER we,re going to have to look in the mirror and blame ourselfs...me included:dstrs:
